3D printed Pocket Operator cases

Everything is now nicely sorted in the shop and photos of the prototype print are added. I know it’s not cheap, but that’s how 3d-printing is. Only a few dollars of each order will go to me. I can say with confidence that you will get a usable case - at least as good or better (with the recent updates) than what you see in the pictures and video posted above. If you like it and want to spread the word about it on your blog, youtube etc. - I would be happy.

So, if anybody wants to give it a try:

The models for printing it by yourself are still available for download of course:

A picture of the shop inventory is added below.

For what it’s worth, I have now put up labeled front plates for all 6 PO models. The model number and Japanese name is embossed above the display.

I have been experimenting with a triple case for a bit, but as there doesn’t seem to be much interest I have stopped for now. If I have some time I want to look into a modular solution allowing to snap multiple single cases together.

That would be nice! I would love a 3 in 1 case too. When do you plan to make button sets for the other POs? I’ve only seen specific ones for the PO-20 so far.

Most of the other POs sequencer symbols have too fine details to engrave them in the buttons. The PO-20 symbols are already pushing the limit of the print resolution a bit.

The control buttons (play, write, etc.) should be usable across all models I think, for the sequencer buttons there currently are generic “numbered buttons” available which should print nicely. I plan to make some more generic buttons in the future with misc symbols and letters to give some more customization options.

ive been meaning to order one of these cases but ive been cash strapped. I appreciate the continued effort. undoubtedly I will order several of these at some point. love my PO’s. I bet there is a demand for a eurorack case. Holds the PO. and have 4 3.5mm holes so L and R of both jacks could be wired to mono plugs. 5.25in tall with mounting holes.

Hello @crashdebug! First of all, thanks a lot and congratulations for the amazing work!

I´m absolutely noob about 3D printings, but I´ll give a try with your project in an university printer. Any special recommendations for a newbie?

Hi @aeoner, the case is designed with 3d-printing in mind so it is pretty straight forward to print. No specific settings like support, raft or brim should be needed. If the printer is reasonably well calibrated you should have no problems. At most you may have to do some cleanup/sanding on the front plate if the PO does not fit in, or if the buttons don’t move freely. You could ask somebody who has used the printer before, how well it is maintained and if there are any quirks to know.

A few successful makes by other people have already been posted on thingiverse, they turned out great.

Hello @crashdebug ! Thanks a lot, your project is really amazing, look at those pictures  However, my buttons aren´t moving freely. You think is just a sanding work or maybe the plastic expanded too much?

Depending on the printer you may have to do some cleanup, the buttons should move without resistance! Sanding is a possibility but tedious. You can also check the buttons and the holes for "blobs" (see pictures below) which can be trimmed with a sharp knife. When this does not help you can try to carefully smooth/enlarge the inside of the holes with a round file.

@aeoner looking at your picture again, maybe you have printed the “PO-20_all_symbol_buttons_v4wide” file? I don’t recommend using the “wide” buttons, except if the printer has a very good resolution. In this case try the buttons which don’t have “wide” in the filename, those are slightly smaller.

By the way, just yesterday I have uploaded numbered buttons for printing on thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1617681 (again i recommend trying the standard version first, not the wide version).

FYI: Shapeways is running a promotion this week on “strong and flexible” plastic prints. Use the code SFONSALE20 for 20% off on all parts printed in this material. Probably the best chance to get one of the cases a bit cheaper than normal! https://www.shapeways.com/shops/cdb

Hello interesting greetings really amazing design I am totally interested in learning more about your work I would like to know if you have an online store for any order? You’ve got models for boys and girls. I’m keeping an eye out. Thank you.

For the little ones of the house it would be great a model that fits their dynamics in the school, as well as there are models of mobile phone linings like the ones shown in https://www.stlfinder.com/

Didin´t had a good experience printing 3d cases for the PO´s - and I tried two models/projects. Marginal economy, very hard to insert the little buttons, didn´t liked the feel.

This looks ultrasick! I already have 2 silicones on my 2 POs but this looks so good … will have to testprint it

i have printed 3 of these, all work great. calibrating a 3d printer is essential for a clean print.

Oh hey! I just posted in another thread about these. I’m Gandarewa on Thingiverse  These are great! Just printed up a clear one.

I’m thinking about filling up the holes for the light passthrough just to see how that looks with the clear.
