Clock modular directoy from op1

Heyo…

I wonder if it is possible to plug the op1’s usb cable directly into a usb/clock module. I am trying to avoid iConnect/opLab and go directly to something like mutable instruments CVpal (although i dont think that module will work).

Any one have any experiences to share? @piotr maybe

I’ve looked into this a lot and never found a solution.

The Expert Sleepers FH-1 might do this, but at has not been released yet. I asked this to the makers but they didn’t test it with an OP-1 (yet).

@karbonckel yes i was looking at it too – It looked to me like its only taking midi note/cc from controllers. If it did clock, I would have expected to see a hardware synth/drum machine in the product pics.

I really wish there was a 2hp or 4hp usb input for midi clock with no extra fratures, that worked with the op1!

Or a 1U tile with this functionality would be wicked.

…maybe the shuttle control from endorphin.es? i think this will do, but it´s a little bit expensive…

It actually does look like it would do it! I cant afford the 12hp, esoecially when I really only need 1 of its awesome features.

I’ll try to match teletypes internal clock to the op1 and then teletype can clock my system, or something!

CV-Pal will not do that (CV-Pal basically turns your modular into a MIDI instrument, where you can plug it into a laptop via USB, and it will show up in your MIDI instruments as a DESTINATION for MIDI).

Really OpLab and/or iConnectMIDI are the ones that will work, but with iConnectMIDI you would still need some MIDI to CV module (like CVPal94 Pitts MIDI2 etc)

IF you have one of the PO devices, you could us it as your main clock: both Op-1 and modular can be clocked from the SYNC signal generated by PO… so, a sort of easy solution, that would require some clever signal splitting. I have synced modular clock to PO click, and have synced Op-1 to it as well, but neve tried both at the same time. Should work though.

@piotr thanks for your input!! I like the idea of the POs driving things, but it feels somehow messy (?) especially if I don’t intend to use the audio from the PO. Sounds like I would need probably an opLAB to get the clock from the PO to the op1? In which case I would rather clock the modular from the OP1, and then the PO from the modular (via a direct click?) anyway just thinking out loud. I should try it to get a feel for the setup before I judge it though.

What I do currently is run my op1 to iConnectMIDI then run that into a Doepfer A-190-8. This works really well aside from a couple issues:

1) Only works if I use the old school midi cable to connect from the iConnect to the A-190-8. The usb port doesn’t transmit the clock messages.
2) The midi clock only transmits if I have the op1 start/play from the head (very beginning) of the tape track. That took ages to debug.

This is fine, but I dream one day of connecting the op1 USB directly to the modular (no iConnect/opLab) and having that module be small like a 1u tile, or 3u 2hp or 4hp max module.

Trying to build it myself might be the only way to go… which is super unlikely!

I haven’t slept so I may not be comprehending anything correctly.

But what about something with this concept from @darenager https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rl-wNTJkZhA

BTW, does anyone know how to calibrate the CVpal? It’s been sitting collecting dust for a month now - I’ve got a cheap $10 multimeter with no idea how to read it.

@Kites — Yep click track will work, but then I lose 1/4th of my op1 tracks – no way!!

yes, that would be nice, and I would like that as well!

The FH-1 should do this, I met os at at modular meet and took my op-1 to test on the FH-1 and it works in polyphonic mode too, I didn’t have time to test sync but it should work. I’m also trying to get him to implement a sync input to have the modular sync the op-1 while using the op-1 to sequence the modular.

@adh82 – From what I’ve read I don’t think it can pass the midi clock info directly from the op1 usb patched to the front – but please update us if you get any info or a chance to test it out!! I would really appreciate it!

The FH-1 is out and it can do send clock inputs to the usb midi to sync the op-1 not sure if it does it the other way round but it’s looking good.

I just bit the bullet and got an oplab, it’s great but I can’t sync the modular to the op-1 or vice versa. Any ideas? I want to be able to send cv/gate from the op-1 while have it sync to the modular or the modular syncs it.

You should be able to sync modular to the signal coming from Op-1. Just not the other way around.
I would also recommend that you look into the Synclab for extra functionality and additional 4 CV trigger sync outputs from OpLab which is mad by @darrenager on this forum.

Has anybody tried the combination OP-1 and Endorphin.es Shuttle Control???

@Zenser yes, it works very well for this.

However, I’ve found that with the new OS, the click track is a nice easy way to get clock into modular, without having to deal with any midi specific modules. Most people have some sort of clock mult/div already, if that’s the case, you don’t waste any module HP on things specifically for the op1, which is nice.

@Polyoptics Thanks for the confirmation.
I also wrote Endorphin.es, they confirmed it also.
A click track is not enough for me, I also would like to use the keyboard, to do some playin…

@polyoptics The new Op1 beta software has a click/sync out for PO’s. Can that do what you’re after without needing to record a click to tape?

Thanks @formatk that’s what I was referring to in my post above.
Its working great in certain cases for me so far, although I’m finding certain modules just don’t like to follow all types of clocks.
