Recently got away from software and and released an EP that prominently features the OP, as well as the Machinedrum, Minilogue and PO-12. Most of it was recorded at a house I rented out in the desert. The paper in my county interviewed me about it and came up with quite the clever headline…
Really great work on the EP, OP. Love “Soda” quite a bit.
Nice article, nice music, well done. Big Beck fan here as well. How did you arrange this EP, was it all on the OP1’s 4 tracks? Or did you play it live and bounce to stereo? Secret laptop used as a multitrack?

Thanks!
Congrats mate!!! That’s a great achievement.
I also own a OP-1, but I think it cant produce studio level sound quality…it sounds a little lo-fi.
Anyone has the same feeling?

good music is good music, I don’t think theres anything lofi about, its a bit noisey but thats it, I feel like I can get some pretty clean sounds from it. Does the song sound lo fi? Because thats pretty much all op
It depends on what you mean by studio level because in the 80’s/90’s I’ve seen a decent number of mono analog synths with way more inherent ‘dirt’. My approcah is still the same as it was then, select best sound source for the application and then shape with eq/comp/rack gear.
Harder to get studio quality for stuff on the op only but the result can be more ‘organic’ and interesting. If I’m aiming for highest quality I print to tape and transfer or play it through my warm audio preamp.

Used to be consumed with these kinds of questions when I started recording (on 4-track cassette) worrying that somehow the production wasn’t “professional” or something. Now I realize this doesn’t really matter as much as the tune. That said, clean and polished are possible with the OP-1. Learn how to use EQ and compression well because those are the tools that generate 95% of the clean/polished aesthetic.

Well, that EP link led me to your original record… which so far I think sounds brilliant (Coils). Something like Radiohead and Beck cross-bred.
