What do you think about Novation Circuit?

Sorry to revive this old thread but can any of the Circuit owners tell me if the firmware update can be done without a Facebook or Google+ account? I’ve not bought one yet but wanted to see if I can download the firmware and am greeted by a Login page giving me only the option of using social media accounts… https://components.novationmusic.com/login

@crudeoperator that’s the only way I found of getting the updates (and the librarian / sample input etc) - i don’t f’book so reluctantly used google+

@houtson thanks for clarifying. Maybe I’ll put the Circuit in the Gear I didn’t Buy Today list then sigh

Fucking social media…
Beardyjack smeared excrement on his novation circuit.

Yeah, the FB G+ thing sucks and reveals a lot about where the worlds is trying to push us.

Just make a dummy account for your circut stuff

+1 for the suckage of Facebook and massive thumbs down to Novation for closing their forum and insisting that support and discussion is now done via Facebook, has put me off of them as a company and had it been this way when I bought the Circuit I’d have passed.

I basically use Facebook as a window to friends’ everyday lives, and for much discussion over synths. Seems pretty harmless, but it obviously stirs up lots of opinions.

I don’t like the fact that anything works over the cloud when it shouldn’t be required, and don’t like the fact that social media are hyperconnected and engulf all aspects of our digital — wait, maybe this should be a topic for another thread

Basically, doesn’t bother me that much. But maybe I’m missing the big picture, as I’ve been known to do.

@josker same here, I don’t see the pb with creating a trash FB account just for these nonsense. It’s not like you have to pay for it.

Same here.

FB wouldn't let me use any of the trash, non-traceable email addresses I could come up with when signing in. Google has even more domains and services to track you across, even if you're not logged in.

I've decided to put the money I saved on the Circuit into my OT piggy bank. Now I only need to manage to not buy the Circuit 3 more times...

Hehe, solid choice there  both great.

I’m quite comfortable with the browser & cloud solution, but it sucks that Circuit Components only works with Windows and MacOS. My laptop runs on Debian, and I have an iPad mini. :frowning:

Isn’t Circuit Components the whole Browser (Web MIDI + Sysex) thingy? That should work with chromium-browser, even from stable, AFAIK. Maybe I’m getting something wrong though. Btw: If you could fire up tcpdump (with a large packet size) while you update your Circuit I might consider buying it and applying the captured dump to it

Edit: We might need to apply some openssl s_client / stunnel magic to break open the SSL stream and get to the data.

Jason fucking Bourne couldn’t update his Circuit now.
Novation have plummeted in my estimation with this news, social media can hang.

I found components to be really fast and intuitive. Drag and drop samples, easier than an Elektron and Overbridge by a long shot. Ya I don’t like you have to sign in with Facebook, and wish it wasn’t internet reliant (the synth editor is still stand alone!).

The Circuit did not ship with Components. It sold fine and worked fine without them for months, apparently. You can still use it completely without internet or components or any of that crap if you're so offended by it. It still plays drums and makes synth sounds, the same way it did in version 1.0.

Granted, you get much cooler new features with Components but still: it's a fine and usable box without them. People put a lot of weird expectations and demands on a $320 box that already gives you a lot in that one box. I almost wish Novation hadn't updated it sometimes, just because now it fuels all sorts of wishes and demands. They probably could have gotten away with saying "it is what it is and does what it does and that's it!"

I know Novation has made firmware for LaunchPad Pro open source and there seem to be some interesting projects made for that. Novation already provides a lot of power and editing capabilities with MIDI CC and NRPN (NPRN?) so my hope is that they open up more about how to communicate with the Circuit so that fans/nerds can make alternative sample managers, etc, without the need for Components while also freeing Novation from having to maintain software (I think Components is web based so they don't have to maintain Mac and Windows things).

Opening up how things communicate seems to be working well for Korg and the Volca Sample (the 'vosyr' Mac app is an awesome tool for managing not just samples but patterns and motion sequencing).

Fucking Jason Bourne would probably have bought and kept a synth from back in the days when what you bought was what you got and there were no goddamn software updates ever - for better or worse :)

I’m totally fine with keeping what you bought but an update that requires social media is just ridiculous.
We get enough Facebook and Twitter shit lodged in our urethra without hardware companies jumping onboard.
Novation! Sack whatever knob end made that decision.

Woah!
I’m kinda with you Beardy, looks like you will have to get one second hand that has already been updated!

I used to think they did the social login thing so that they didn’t have to write their own user management system, and thus wouldn’t have to worry about securing the information, etc, as that’s become quite the pain in the ass these days as we’ve seen from the constant leaks. But they have a separate user registration system for their own support structure so… I don’t know why they didn’t use that.

I forgot that the firmware was locked behind the Components website now. That is dumb. Most of the new firmware features require Components to use (i.e., sample management). But you still need 1.2 firmware, I think, to even get use out of the Isotonik editor.

I just spent a couple days designing all new patches and picking the perfect 64 samples. Probably won’t ever have to fuck with components again. Again, it actually works great, its just shitty about the Facebook thing. If you can get over that, its really good.
