What other hardware are you using with your OP-XY?

I am using it with a Moog DFAM, which is pretty cool. You can either send a clock signal to the DFAM or individual notes, letting the DFAM advance to the next step with each note. You can also use notes to control additional parameters in the DFAM. Then, you can send the output to the external DFAM input and adjust settings like effects, EQ or Pan (my favorite) per step . It’s a really fun combination.

I’ve been using the XY with the OP-1f. The video above has me inspired to add my DFAM.

I’ve been using mine with the Dreadbox Typhon, which is proving to be a pretty great combination. Love the accessibility of the Dreadbox’s knobs and the fact that it has its own dedicated (and really good) effects which lets me offload whatever voice I want to give a different texture to and be able to manipulate.

Also it can be run off of a USB power bank which makes my live / primary setup 100% battery powered which is liberating.

What would be the best external gear to imodulate the OPXY sounds rather than having an external device which plays its own sounds and modulation being mixed with the OPXY?

I’ve been playing around driving the XY from my Expressive-E Osmose. I recommend selecting the Axis synth, then mapping aftertouch to Shape and the mod wheel to Ratio (Synth1 and Synth2 respectively, in the mod sub-page of the Synth Settings page). It’s pretty fun. You can see the aftertouch and modwheel data in the Pages screen on the XY:

I’m using a QuNexus as a controller so I can record aftertouch and modwheel (assigned to tilt) while playing layered/linked tracks.

I also got a Drumbrute Impact for drums. I love programming drums on the XY and have lots of my favorite sounds on there but there are way too many choices for me and it’s tough to quickly mute/adjust individual drum sounds on the fly. So a dedicated drum machine simplifies things a bit for me.

Plus I’ll be using an OP-Z or Ting for vocals.

I’ve been testing my new Monolit controller and OP-XY. It’s been a little rocky at first, but I’ve only had the pair for 2 weeks. There is some wild possibilities with the Monolit, especially with the new beta! Maybe I’ll upload more demos in the future.

It’s ok/safe to share this iCloud link? I’m assuming we can’t upload vids? iCloud Photos - Apple iCloud

I am interested to hear more about your experience with these two devices.

I am considering MONOLIT as well, and am wondering what was the nature of your “rocky” experience with this pairing. I mainly want the MONOLIT to be used as additional LFOs for the OP-XY parameters. And I think I would prefer to use the TRS connection between the two.

I am also curious if MONOLIT sends out MIDI simultaneously via TRS and USB, or whether you need to choose which output you will be using?

Thank you for your feedback, if you have a moment to share it!

Hi @jtswearingen thanks for posting about your setup.

The QuNexus is currently out of stock, so I just picked up the little brother K-board C. And, I’ve only had the OP-XY for two weeks so I have a lot to learn. I know that this MIDI controller supports MPE and Poly after touch, but I don’t think the OP-XY does. Am I correct in my thinking? So the best I can do is assign tilt to something like mod wheel?

Hi Rick! You’re correct that the XY doesn’t support MPE, but it does respond to aftertouch (just in a mono way), modwheel, pitch bend, and velocity. It also records modwheel, pitch bend, and aftertouch with remarkable resolution.

For a while I had the QuNexus set up so Tilt sent CC1 (modwheel), but I often ended up with way too much modulation so I don’t have Tilt attached to anything at the moment.

Here’s how you assign destinations for aftertouch/modwheel/velocity/pitch bend on the XY:

  1. Hold Shift and press Instrument (i.e., the button with a wave and “1-8” below it)
  2. Scroll to Mod
  3. Adjust the amount and destination of the different modulators.

Thanks for the tip on where to assign destinations. I’m still learning my way around.

So you didn’t mention pressure. Is pressure the same as aftertouch on the k-board C?

i’m heading over to the manual next to see if I can figure out what the destinations mean. Synth1-4, ADSR 1-4, filter 1-4 and lfo 1-4.

Rick

… well, the manual was a bit useless. I couldn’t find anything describing what these destinations mean.

Yes, pressure is the same as aftertouch.

The mod destinations refer to the first 4 parameters on each of the 4 pages of each engine: synth1-4 control the parameters 1-4 on page 1. adsr1-4 control the 4 parameters of the amplitude envelope on the second page, etc.

Thanks @jtswearingen ! That helps me a lot. I joined this forum less than a week ago and am already months ahead of the steep learning curve.

This is a bit off topic, but I wonder if you can suggest a good protective sleeve for the QuNexus. I need to travel with my K-board C and am looking for something small and light.
