Battle 31 Voting

Was a tossup between Ruslan and HelloOperator. The latter got my vote.

in 10 hours from now I will “close” the battle (22 pm, Mexico time) .
If anyone still haven’t voted, this is the last chance!
cheers

@aeoner : very good drums, it’s compact. The aerian line fits well.
@servando I really like this track, there are many good ideas !
@sammyjams this battles fits your style, that’s for sure. You really manage to get a sound a la Brainfeeder, it’s really great.
@marijn I like this crazy mashing of a sample.
@jakealstad, your track really brought me elsewhere, I would have liked a second part to this.
@helloperator, cool groove, reminds me of some good acid jazz of the 90’s
@Wi_ngo your track illustrates the two effects the best in my opinion :slight_smile: Very good drums, disturbing sounds, lots of weird stuff going on… it’s my favourite, I ended voting for you

I’m finding it very hard to choose between…

@SammyJams - just instantly likeable and my secret wish to be able pull off SP style jams like that… really good.

@hellooperator - wow, really nice composition… so was some of the dialog already cut up and scratched by a 'tablist and then you chopped it up further? Some of it baffled me :slight_smile: I really love all that dusty fingers / scratch sample stuff. Big thumbs up!

@dj_kln - loaaaaads of work went into this, I can tell. I certainly appreciate all the fiddling and attention to detail… a man after my own heart. Also love how your style comes through in this. Very good work.

@aeoner - love the classic scratch break like something straight off Dirt Style records and really loved the stereo treatment all round. Did you do something special to the break there or was it my imagination?

I’m very impulsively going to go with @hellooperator. Good work people!

@yoof

Nope the dialogue just came straight from a vintage informational video about direct distance dialing that someone posted on YouTube. The dialogue was sampled and cut inside the operator and all the faux-scratching was done entirely on OP1 :slight_smile:

The only sounds you hear from Dusty fingers is the basic drum beat and bass line loop - everything else (barring the telephone ring and spoken word scratching) is 100% operator.

Thanks for your vote man - and sorry about the disaster. Did anything survive to put in the battle scraps thread? I can’t imagine it being anything other than top notch, disaster or not!

Great battle! I wasn´t a great fan of CWO and Phone and this certamen helped me a lot understanding those funky ones. I was specially surprised by the CWO feedback (a moderate setting generates a texture that fits really well with what I like to do) and the sort of “sub-oscillator” that the Phone can make. In my current OP-1 production style (very sample based) it can make amazing thinks with the Synth sampling. Indeed, the first beat that I made (and deleted - stupid decision, because although it wasn´t perfect it was cool enough to be saved) was based in this phone-bass concept.

Some comments:

@SammyJams: Very solid beat, with that L.A/Brainfeeder/Leaving Records feeling. The mix is also very warm and professional.

@Ruslan : Liked the experimental approach; great sample work, and I love the vanilla drums that you used :slight_smile: Very creative.

@marijn : Crazy! Really cool textures and noise programming. With a more beat oriented focus, could be a Burial tune :slight_smile:

@jakealstad : Loved the mood, the very digital timbres…and great breaks!!

@HelloOperator : Wow!! One of the coolest beats that I´ve listened here. Amazing Madlib/MF Doom vibe, I´m just waitin’ Quasimoto start rapping above it :slight_smile: The scratch technique was also a killer, I need to learn it!

@wi_ngo Great mixtape feeling, like a collection of small beats united by the “Hello!, Hello!” theme. Very creative. One of my favorites.

@servando I really like this filtering techno thing, when you start tweaking the drum beat (also, cool the crazy tempo change). Very danceable, with a cool melody. Could fit a BPitch Control release (or with the slightly lo-fi sound of the OP-1, some of the white labels of L.I.E.S).

@SJGambler acid vibes! Liked the beat and the filtering. Good work.

@dj_KLN I absolutely loved this Rn´B acapella (who is the girl?). Great chopping work and minimalist approach to the beat. Another solid entry.

@Overseas_Territory: Cool piano, it´s sampled? Some Aphex Twin vibe, very interesting work.

Tough choice here, as I´m really into those beat-centric stuff like @SammyJams, @wi_ngo, @dj_KLN and @HelloOperator. Will stay with the last one, golden era/Stones Throw vibe, the kind of thing that I love to hear.

@yoof missed your entry, really sad to hear about the accident :frowning: The break in my beat is a classic one! Sampled it with sampling volume of the OP-1 really high then resampled it adjusting the sound, cutting some frequencies and applying a very discrete Phone. There´s a very subtle panning in some parts, although I thing that the stereo feeling is more related to the constant panning of the melody (which was duplicated and manually moves all the time, sometimes gently, sometimes not).

Thanks a lot @LyingDalai, @plasticdub (missed your entry too) and @Servando for the comments!

voted for @HelloOperator

been meaning to provide more comments too, but haven’t had a lot of time. I’ll add them later.

thanks for the nice comments everyone! Had a great time listening to what everyone else came up with, I can’t wait for the next comp.

Hmmm, I will wait until there is a winner to close the battle.
any other ideas?

Hey I just want to thank everybody for the kind words and votes. I’m really enjoying these battles - I find them a great way to get the creative juices flowing, and they’re really helping me getting to know the OP-1 better.

I don’t know if there is a protocol, but personally I’m cool with there being a tie - I think they both deserve it! Not sure exactly how that would work going to the next battle, but I’m sure it could be worked out. :slight_smile:

Really great entries all across the board. I really feel like I’m in awesome company here, and I’m learning a lot from everyone. Rad community!

from compiling the Battle History thread, it looks as though there have been several ties in the past.

in some cases they winners collaborated on the next rules. in another case one winner let the other winner do the honors.

i suppose in the latter case the guy who relinquished the rule setting privileges might be able to compete in the next battle as well…but that part i am not sure about in terms of protocol. that would be cool though, i think.

a collaborated rule set could be interesting as well though!

As a moderator I can´t do much… Either the winners agree into moderating the next battle together or we wait for another vote.

sorry for delayed comments...and thanks to those who provided feedback!

looking forward to the next one!

@sammyjams - Moon

cool vibes and nice sounds throughout. i would’ve loved a bit more variation in the tune. like if it did more of tweaking in the middle like it does at the end (which is the best part in my opinion). and then mixed out in a different way after it came back to the main groove. but obviously lots of folks like it…and it’s a nice groove. would’ve been my vote too, had it been a bit more varied, and had a bit more drops and rises.

@djabrail - 1984 (Vocal Version)

my first thought when hearing this track was “a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist". the tweaked vocal and effects add a nice bit of warmth and texture that is very appealing. aptly named title and dope track overall. really like at the end result, at the end result, at the end result.

@marijn - Battle 31 - Labyrinthine

super cool sounds and textures in this one. sounds like some star wars sound effects, like crazy ones that you hear when they jump into hyper speed or are going through a fight scene with spaceships flying all around. and then the hint of a melody and what sounds like a voice comes in and provides a hallucinogenic effect. cool stuff.

@hexagonsun - first op-1 jam

really like the use of CWO and how it adds this other level to the harmonies of this track. nice work. smooth transitions and a nice vibe. can’t go wrong and feels relaxing to listen to, even though the effects are quite driven.

@HelloOperator - Telephone Cwol

yes! this track is dope! great structure and build ups/drops. awesome use of samples and tight LFO scratch effects (assuming that’s how you did it). right up my alley.

@wi_ngo - Hello Cow Phone

i really like the drop into something completely different that comes back and fits back into the mix. starts at 1:16ish. at that point i was like “yeah!”. really cool stuff man. and really like how mental it gets with the effects. i was much more timid with my use…and makes me wish i kicked it a little harder in some places, since you did it justice.

@Servando - Telefonkwop-1 (DF2 rmx)

first off, thanks for hosting! sweet battle!

sweet bassline kicks in around 0:37. it’s got great movement. cool groove and all together great track. and then towards the end when it gets all tweaked is magic. really dig the ending especially.

@Gambler - Club Sub - A Blunt Weapon

i hear a techno thriller soundtrack or movie trailer from the early 90’s in this track. nice driving beats and dramatic build ups. the drone bass pad in the back fill the track with nice atmosphere.

@Overseas_Territory - cwo on the phone

crazy soundscape. really tripped out stuff. cool to listen to.

@aeoner - 00:18 [Operator-1 Forum Battle]

nice use of the Impeach break! one of my favorites. i like the use of vocal samples as well, even though i don’t understand them. are there bird samples in the track, or was that from effects? super dusty and gritty. better late than never (for your entry), since i really dig this track.

also @aeoner - the girl is just a vocalist i sampled from Soundcloud, naassti. i posted the link to her a cappella on my track’s page, and sent her an email thanking her for me using it. the song she is singing is “Angels” by The XX. the original (and a lot of their music) is really nice, and more like a indie-rock/electronica kinda vibe to it.

@hellooperator, thanks for answering my question. Now, I’m even more amazed! You must have been into the scratchier side of hip hop in a past life - sounded so authentic, especially with the dusty fingers beat in the background, you nailed it :slight_smile:

@aeoner - nice one. The effort really paid off, a bit of attention to a drum loop like that can lift it to another level - good skills :slight_smile:

As for my track, it was going to be a fairly classic style acid track with sounds grabbed from x0xb0x going into an overdrive/distortion pedal against some GoldBaby 808/909 drums, but I did one overdub too many, haha. Now relegated to the ideas graveyard on my computer :slight_smile: Shift-tape 1-2-3-4 and start again!

Thanks everybody for the great feedback! The poll is showing that I won, but I guess there was a tie (I was asleep). What was decided? @Servando I think it’s your call as host : )

@sammyjams Congrats if you won sammy (it shows that you did on my screen) A well deserved win whether you got it or not mate - I’ve got a big love for all of your tracks!

@yoof I would have enjoyed listening to that I’m certain. It would be nice if the OP1 had even just 1 level of undo pertaining to the main “sequencer” but at least we have another comp around the corner.
Re scratching: I was into the scratchier side of hip hop in this life (albeit quite a long time ago) my 1210 and scratch mixer have long been retired into the cupboard - but I was a half decent turntablist in my time. Anyway, thanks for the props man!

Oh and while I remember (your tape-shift-1-2-3-4 reminded me) do you know if there’s a finite number of times that we can erase the tape like that? I’m presuming it’s some kind of flash storage and that one day it might not want to store anything anymore. But maybe it’s a moot point; I expect the OLED screen will probably fail before then.

That’s really sad to think about; it would be nice to think that the OP1 could outlive us all and pass down to another generation. But hopefully by then, kids will be able to work some kind of techno-shamanism and make the deceased OP1s sing again, or maybe they’ll spend all their time “embodied” in cyberspace so they’ll just be able to conjure up virtual synths that they play with haptic feedback gloves, or direct neural interfaces - lol!

[in Keanu voice] "I know synthesis!"

Congrats to all, I really enjoyed listening and drew inspiration from everything. Looking forward to the next comp - and I’m hoping for a real stinker of a rule-set, something that will initially annoy/intimidate everyone but turns out to be deceptively limiting would be hilarious and fun. (Ok Ok I know only the winner sets the rules, but nobody said I couldn’t try to influence people :wink:

@HelloOperator - aha, that explains it :) do you have any mixes from back in the day? I sadly lack the fader skills, but I love that style of music. My best effort was: https://soundcloud.com/yoof-1/itchy-itchy-scratchy-scratchy (mostly other people's scratching I hasten to add!)

Re tape-shift-1-2-3-4, occassionally when I do that it does a refrag, I guess to sort out the disk so there are much bigger chunks of contiguous memory addresses! Pretty cool that they added that in!

Dayum, nice jam! (I’ll DL that later) Next time I dig through some old HDDs I’ll look for some jams, but I’m notoriously harsh when it comes to just deleting stuff forever more. Maybe I’ll just pull that 1210 out of retirement for a future battle and bust out some crabs and 2-click flare orbits, fresssssh!

PS. Didn’t know about the defrag - very cool!

OK I’m out for the day - that wallpaper wont scrape itself off the walls - more’s the pity <_<

Ooooohhhkayyy!.

No more valid votes from now!.

@SammyJams Congratulations!, and now it´s your turn… :slight_smile:

thank you all for your participation and comments

@Yoof, should I delete the poll or what´s the protocol to follow?
x

Congrats @SammyJams! Can’t wait to hear what you dream up for the next rules :slight_smile:

Nothing left to do @Servando. When SammyJams starts the new battle, we can “announce” the new one and “unannounce” the old one.
