Battle 46: I Like Your Style

@Zach_Lambert : i love it ! It reminds me of trip hop songs I listened long ago… maybe Portishead or Massive Attack ?

Thanks a bunch, @TibiDzi! You’ve got it right - I tried to make a track that could’ve been made by Portishead!

@Zach_Lambert this is dope bro, nailed the Portishead vibe!

Awesome track @Zach_Lambert! You earned the bonus point pretty much immediately, haha.

Great work. Is that you singing?

Great work.

Thanks a ton, you guys! Yeah, it’s me singing. Should’ve rehearsed a little more I guess.

Thanks borden! Now I want to guess your tracks, too!

Stakes is high, very good song!
Now I know who to pastiche…

My D50 V synth card is coming out to buss shit up!

I came up with this battle as a convoluted excuse to buy more gear, I’m glad it’s working out for you too, @winerz.

LOL I have a moratorium on new gear these days! Enough 1990s hardware for one lifetime…

Yo gang, here’s mine:

This one I really wanted to try and feature vox, and ended up using an SM7, thru a pre73 and DBX160 for the vocals, straight into the OP1. This was wayyyy harder than I thought to get decent vox, I’m far more accustomed to doing heaps of takes and messing with them from there. This was way more “raw” an approach I guess. Makes me feel for anyone who had to cut to tape back in the day… Applying fx to the vox was really hard, as I had to either chop it into the drum sampler twice (the phrase was about 25 secs long all up) and then try play it in time, or bounce out to album via master FX and then back in. I ended up doing a bunch of both.

Made a few mistakes here and there (left the Ear on by accident a few times, which caused distortion in parts. But i like distortion. happy accident?). This was also by the most amount of tape I’ve used exploring one idea (almost 5 mins!), mainly because I lifted/dropped lots of different takes as backup. It was a real mess for a good couple of days and just kind of flowed together today. This one really really ate up a lot of headroom (mainly the doubled drums), which made the final crescendo a bit flat

Producer-wise, I actually started with someone particular in mind, and then once I added the vocals it changed immediately to someone else, so the trajectory changed a bit.

Wow, that’s a great track! Very nice vox, too. I thought of Gonjasufi or Radiohead when I heard it…?

EDIT: I really love your Voice, bro.

Yo @Zach_Lambert thank you bro! And yep, Radiohead was what I was going for with this one - especially once I added the initial line of vox. Wonder if anyone will guess the original producer?

p.s. thanks for the props on the voice, man  did you sing on yours, or was it all sampled? sounded dope AF

Yeah! Good job, sir!

Yeah, I sang on mine using a tascam iXZ run through my iPhone and then into the OP-1!

Wow. Killer entries on this one so far! Great vocals on these tracks

I took a shot at it https://soundcloud.com/zymfm/cow

Great entries guys !
@millbastard your track reminds me some Apparat or Moderat tunes
Very good work

i did my homework. I used the op1 mic to record some vocals in the drum sampler to pitch them and play with them.
lots of fun.
