The OP-Z encoder is fully digital. The spinning magnet in the dial interacts (without any contact) with an integrated circuit at the board below. I would guess the later has failed. You will probably need to send it for repair.

I actually got lucky and managed to solve it 
Great! How did you fix it? What was the problem?
The magnet had gone off, so I just put it back.
