Custom Firmware on the OP-1

Beta 2 is out. Now I’m going to sleep for at least 12 hours.

Make sure to read the installation instructions if you want to try it out. Please note that you have to use the 4-track export tool (menu on site) to get the 4 stereo tracks from the OP-1. Disk mount won’t work properly with stereo.

n=1, I’ve only tested it on my OP-1 so please let me know if/when you find bugs. And, there’s quite a few new button combos, documented in the manual (ex. toggling between the channel strip by pressing the synth/drum or mixer button again while on said page).

Ps. the spring reverb in the tape delay FX sounds shite right now and takes a bunch of CPU. Use mode 1-4 for best results.
Ps 2. If you slam 2 FX, 2 LFO:s, channel strips on instrument and master, and a CPU hungry synth on top of that, you’ll see frame drops in the UI. If it gets overloaded, the FX till temporarily disable until you chill out with the chord pounding.

I’m messing with Hundekraft’s DOTS AND Euclid sequencers. Why are sounds that are used played at a different pitch? Not all of them but some individual sounds are played back at a different pitch. Anyone else experiencing it? Is it a bug or a user error? I’m experiencing when using drums.

Yes I also had this. It’s definitely not looking intentional because why would it be useful.

Just set it up:smiling_face::heart:

ufff, the fps drops on Opus nearly brought my Op1 to stall, if you record continuously on a per track basis and fill every tape with recorded audio, the complete unit starts to freak out at around ~5 min mark :grimacing:

in order to recreate you need to record any audio input (radio/line in) straight to tape, maybe a mix of additional fx) and as soon as they all have enough audio recorded, it’s slowing down the cpu on a much deeper level. Is this really necessary to re-write the core or whatever? hard pass

thanks, i’ll try to recreate it. a few things that would help me: which build was it (hold help on opus’s menu), which plugins were in the mods folder (tape undo especially), and how full was the flash (opus’s menu, t4)? does it also happen if you start without plugins (hold stop while switching on)? and was it only the screen getting slow, or did the sound or the recording itself glitch too? if it crashed, the log is in the crash folder on the disk (beta 3.2)

Just tried to recreate, but not running into said issues. A very slight slow down in FPS like on factory firmware, but nothing unusual.

Recorded each channel individually to test where it would happen, engine is DX and reverb is plate set to hall mode with a long decay. 4 voices each time & audio was also being sent over usb.

Video of it in action: https://streamable.com/zbgcb4

@JohnnyEgo can you share the crash log or if you don’t have one, share the exact synths, settings, etc you used?

dunno, have been recording SP1 tape loops to tape and played guitar on top and noticed the timing issues, I think you broke the heart of the OP1 because it’s not really open of what you did to the core of it, so it’s hard to see what’s going on under the hood.

had to hard reset the OP1 several times (on off does nothing when it’s stalling the tappes) and iam glad it came back on stock 246 and will now leave it like this, SP1 TL 4.0 is around the corner and HK 3.1

maybe if I have the time or passion to manually record a lot of audio to tape and then find the culprit is a bit much for now as this will most likely happen if you have a full tape with different takes (my Op1 is a sketchpad) and realizing that could break like after a month etc is a no no for me personally, but for a bit of tinkering it’s fun but obviously a few weeks behind in development and you may get there and I’ll try again. :cloud_with_rain:

So the bug you mentioned happening was actually in the stock OS for years and OP1R too, yet you tried to pin it as a specific cfw bug and used that as an excuse to trash other devs, again.

“I think you broke the heart of the OP1 because it’s not really open of what you did to the core of it”

“it’s slowing down the cpu on a much deeper level. Is this really necessary to re-write the core or whatever? hard pass”

“realizing that could break like after a month etc is a no no for me personally, but for a bit of tinkering it’s fun but obviously a few weeks behind in development and you may get there and I’ll try again”

All respect to @popcorp for their hard work btw. Happy it’s been found, just sad with the disingenuous attempts to make it look like a CFW specific issue. That’s lame and helps no one.

p.s. there’s a dedicated thread for cfw gossip. Use it.

it’s crazy that this never ever happened on stock but only on Opus2 while simply recording things to tape resulting in a super critical bug that nearly broke my OP1. for god sake this closed thing is dangerous because it’s not transparent and is build only on recreation instead of natively running the things that have been already found.

Interestingly popcorp just took the opportunity to discover more unnecessary tasks that are running under the tape to make room for more things and the result will be most likely within the next HK build (where all of this runs natively)

I’ve also never had this happen on any op1r or HK build, even Maiko has been super stable (regarding the tape/CPU kill on Opus2 only) they keep on trying to keep it closed to hide these critical bugs and lurk anything into their “bridge”.

out of safety reasons, wait at least for the new HK or use op1r only until they get a grip :hot_dog:

Please @JohnnyEgo, really use the gossip corner for that, and leave this threat free from hate.

The reasons for the futility to argue had been all summed up in this post of @TabascoEye , already:

Personally, I do not perceive the message as hateful at all.

I’ve just installed the Opus 2 firmware - does anyone know how you switch chord/scale mode off - other than taking it out of the mod folder? (my solution) Apart from that it seems nice and stable. Also it there a list of other plugins for it, or haven’t we got that far down the line yet?

Hello! When you’re in the synth engine you can press blue for scales and green for chords.

Did you get the plugin starter pack already? That’s all the dev plugins made so far, like DX

https://github.com/LizardMan245/opus/releases/download/v2.0-beta.3.2/opus2-starter-pack.zip

And this thread also has a few not in the starter pack yet: OPUS: a Mod Suite for the original OP-1 (246) - #155 by displayname808

i’m glad you like opus 2! the second method is turning it off in the mod menu (press synth + drum + tape + mixer). press T2 to enter the mods list and search “scales and chords”, press blue knob to enter its settings, then set chords setting to off.
