Display on OP-1 doesn't turn on :\

Hi all, so I just began borrowing a friend of a friend’s OP-1. I believe he’s had it for a couple of years now, and it does seem slightly worn. Regardless, I used it a couple of days ago just fine, and then just fine earlier today as well. After using it today, I turned it off, and then returned a few hours later to find that the display was no longer working when I turned it on. It has sound when on, and charges/seems to be fully charged. When I turn it on, the speaker makes a little crackle noise and the TE symbol briefly flashes, but that’s it. I can play the keys just fine and make noise, just can’t see anything.

I cannot boot into TE mode. I’ve also tried the method of turning it on/plugging it in/unplugging to see if that’d do anything. Nil. I was considering trying to re-calibrate the battery meter to see if that’d do anything, but I’m a lil hesitant. I just emailed teenage engineering to see if they have anything to say, and I asked my buddy if his friend has ever had problems with the display.

Please lemme know if there’s anything I can do, or if you guys have any ideas. I was really looking forward to playing with this little guy, and I also don’t want to have broken it somehow even though I haven’t dropped it or anything like that. Just sigh.

Tried doing a factory reset by holding down COM, powering up and pressing 7, but no dice. Not sure if I would need the display for this too, anyway… Can’t find any videos of factory resetting either, so even if I do have to go through the menu to select stuff, I wouldn’t know what to do because I can’t see anything.

You could try re-uploading the firmware:

1. connect to PC or Mac with USB
2. startup with COM pressed then press 1 (in the 1-8 row)
3. you should see the OP-1 appear as an available drive
4. copy op1_218.op1 file onto the OP-1 usb drive
5. eject the OP-1 usb device
6. wait 5 minutes for firmware to load (takes about 2 minutes, 5 should be plenty), then turn OP-1 off and back on again
7. good luck!

AFAIK after 5 (eject USB device) you need to press the COM key to start the update. And you need to leave the USB cable connected, even after ejecting.

that depends on the version of your TE-BOOT. In newer versions, there is no more need to press the button anymore, the software detects the “eject” and starts the update right away.

In my understanding this is related to the computer’s OS, not the TE-Boot version. On Windows 7 you need to press the button but not in El Capitan, I would guess older versions of OS X need the button whereas Win 10 you don’t…

Hi froogurt, I am experiencing the same exact problem with my op-1, having the display not showing anything. I would love to know if you ended up finding a solution to this problem. Thank you so much!
