EDIT: Just realised you can’t do FF and RW with midi, a real bummer
Hi all, just looking over the recent MIDI updates and realised/wondered if it might now be possible to have a bit more of a coherent 8 track set-up now?
With the tape transport messages could one OP-1F be slaved fully to another? I’m guessing you’d need an external midi controller sending transport messages, but I was intrigued whether anyone had taken a stab at working with dual OP-1’s tape in this way yet?
I’ll try it this week, first using Logic, then without.
Edit: So far it’s working just fine with Logic. It was easy. I set both OPs to receive Clock and SPP, and set each to a different MIDI channel. I set the tapes to MIDI Sync. I connected both to the laptop with USB.
I sent Clock, SPP, and MMC from Logic. I loaded an External Instrument plugin on two tracks in Logic with their MIDI output channels selected. Logic is now controlling the tape transport for both OP1s. I can start, stop, pick up from anywhere in both tapes. I can mix and match tape styles. Everything stays in sync.
I don’t really know how useful this will be since this approach requires a laptop but it was fun to set up. Later I’ll try to sync them without using Logic and post back.
Edit 2: I don’t think the OP-1f is sending Song Position Pointer over USB even when I set the master OP-1 SPP Origin to Tape and the slave SPP Origin to Loop In. I don’t know why, maybe I’ve got some settings wrong but so far I can’t create an eight track OP-1f with just two OP1s and no laptop.
If anyone has any ideas how to make this happen I’d love to read them. AI says I can do this but AI is stupid.
Thanks so much for giving this a try. I’ve found a cheap 2nd one so will give it a whirl this week…I did find the same issue with my multi-EP rig until one particular cable solved it, still not sure why!
