DX7 sounds for OP1?

Hi folks,

I’m looking for classic DX7 sounds, has anyone seen any samples for OP1 or managed to recreate any using the onboard synths?

Thanks!

The FM synth is based on the same tech that the DX7 had.

Have a play with it, you could also generate a load of random patches based just on the FM synth to see if you can find what you’re after:

Oh I love fm and the OP1 does some cool stuff but I haven’t been able to get those glassy smooth sounds that the dx7 can produce. Not enough mod options I suppose for those complex patches.

Haven’t tried the randomizer though…

OP-1 FM is unique. Kind of “rough” at times. I also notice in lower registers that some notes sound differently than others, and this can get extreme enough that the pitches don’t sound like even tuning anymore.

Ironically the the “Operator’s” FM engine doesn’t have enough, erm… Operators to cover the full gamut of DX7 sounds. There’s probably a greater parity with Yamaha’s new Reface DX (a four operator FM) but that said, like the TX81Z, the Reface DX has access to more waveforms than the usual sine wave.

On the bright side, DX-7s are (comparatively) cheap and make fantastic controller keyboards too (the keybed is legendary) Alternatively, software versions of the DX-7 are obviously very accurate, with many supporting original DX-7 patches via sysex or conversion software.

I guess it’s best to just let the OP-1’s FM engine take you where it will, but it’s understandable that you’re lusting after some of those classic sounds.

Speaking of fm synthesis I’ve really been enjoying FM4 on IOS!

anyone who could give me any advice on recreating the “solid bass” dx100 preset using FM would be most appreciated…

I just released some sampled FM patches from other Yamaha keyboard and there is a few of glassy sounds. PSS-140 is based on YM2413 chip so no DX7 but it can do some smooth stuff. Feel free to abuse them

Just playing with great free DX7 compatible VST - Dexed.

It comes with 1024 patches so you can for sure find the real DX7 stuff there.

It can be even used as an editor for DX7! It transmit and receives sysex.

Legowelt’s site has a free DX sample pack. Here’s the direct DL link: http://www.pacificmicro.org/Legowelt_DX-FILES_SamplePack.zip

and here’s his site for more sampled synths: http://www.legowelt.com/ (click samples link on left)

very nice Jiggity

This app is awesome, so far it is one of my favorite synth on the iPad

Since this was recently brought back, I will say I’ve managed to get pretty close to Bass 1 but couldn’t nail it at the time. ie Danger Zone, Take On Me, etc

You could also get a Korg Volca FM, that is DX7 compatible.
