Elektron Digitakt

In the Sonic State video, there's a brief mention of USB audio recording... Anyone have any idea if it can output 8 audio tracks over USB? Or... whatever... basically, can you record the 8 tracks as stems in any way?

Yes, with Overbridge. Dunno if with the free version or the paid one.

Just my "idea" anyway. ;)

…and spoke too soon. Just heard in Cuckoo’s vid: something about USB, “…where you can move your 8 tracks inside the computer.”

I’m getting sold on this thing more and more day by day.

Ha. Perfect. Didn’t understand Overbridge is that robust. This might be my first Elektron product.

You will need the premium version of Overbridge to get all these features without limitation.

Yeah, I gave him the link two posts before yours

So I officially pre-ordered through Perfect Circuit Audio. Anyone else expecting one? Now it is time to wait…

Just the one set of outputs really annoys me on this

Just the one set of outputs really annoys me on this

why?

Basic trick for mixing is to output kicks separately.

Another thing is that you might want to treat differently stereo-expanded tracks and mono ones.
For these two things, 2 pairs of output is pretty convenient.

It feels and sounds really nice! Also I dig this new Elektron form factor.

Their kind of marketing it as a workstation (ie demos of making complete tracks). It’s fraustrating as outboard gear could be used with the p-locks etc…like having track 2 of the digi going through the space echo and all the automation you could do. So it doesn’t play nicely with other gear, essentially your buying outboard and then running for cover asap back into digital land via overbridge. Don’t get me wrong it looks a fun box but they messed up on connectivity.

You mean… You got yours already ?

Or are these remarks from your SB’17 experience ?

I’ll def sell some of my gear to afford this thing. really promising demos so far.

One thing I wondered but didn’t get covered so far: if you can set the start and end point of the sample and you could set different start and end points with the trig conditions, you could basically chop samples, right?
I mean it might be easier with the op-1 but I guess you could come up with creative ways using it and with the zoom in and out options it could be pretty straight forward.
Because I never used elektron gear I don’t know if every parameter is available for trig conditions or if there are only limited chosen options.

Out of interest - what is everyone seeing in this thing to get excited about? I mean if you have an OP-1 your sampling is covered (esp with poly), seems similar in that department. Is it just the looks and the P Lock thing? It does look cool but so does the Volca Sample (ignoring the obvious lack of direct sampling) but for £400 cheaper

@jonesy_op I have never really gotten into the OP-1 sampler. Just doesn’t feel like how I want to be interacting with samples. For me, I was between this and an MPC. Since the MPC Live is more expensive and feels more “in the box” for its environment (not to say it doesn’t also look great), I feel the Digitakt will get me where I need to go. Being able to do effects and creative things to a sample also appeals to me. As in, on the OP-1 you can’t really get too creative with how you treat each sample. It is more like a polyphonic sampling keyboard vs a drum machine. That, and I was wanting something that could take on MIDI programming in addition to sampling – again MPC vs Digitakt, but I like the Digitakt form factor and features (and price) better.

And yeah there are lots of ways to do sampling for cheaper. iPad apps would work for this too. But it all comes down to what you are drawn to. I really enjoyed the Akai S2000 for the short time I had it – but it was a lot of work to get something sampled, effected, and sounding good BEFORE making music with it. Most other samplers on the market feel like they lack the accessibility of the Digitakt (to me). Again, could argue against any given piece of equipment all day – it just comes down to what appeals to your sense of creativity and workflow.

@jonesy_op for me it comes down to the sequencer. The OP-1 sequencers are pretty basic. P-locks, sample locks, retrigs, micro timing, conditional trigs, fills etc… All that sequencing 8 audio tracks and 8 midi tracks. OP-1 and/or Volca sample can’t even come close (I’ve owned both). I currently have an Analog rytm and I’m planning to sell it and get the Digitakt.

You are definitely speaking from a stand point of never using Elektron gear. Try an Elektron sequencer out and you will realise why everyone is excited about the Digitakt. A comparison with a Volca…is quite funny in all honesty

+100

Id also love to see where they have marketed it as an all in one workstation for creating whole tracks?! Where on earth did you get that from? They’ve clearly marketed it as a mono drum machine
