GRIM

Our new album ‘Grim’ is out today. I used the OP-1 on most of the 6 tracks. Free download, just enter zero when you’re asked about the price. If you enter more than that… well, the starving musicians will be ever so grateful to you …

Thanks and everyone have a great day.

Really nice. Listened to first 3 tracks, will check the rest out when less chaotic here. Great production. Be interested to know how the vocal was recorded/mixed. Really nice vibe/distortion.

Thanks a bunch for your feedback, glad you like it. Recording the vocals is always the most challenging task of the whole lot, especially because we don’t work under studio circumstances. My ‘home studio’ is located in the corner of our living room in our 3rd floor apartment. We usually record the vocals on business days when most folks are at work so there’s not much noise coming from, say, above, like a vacuum cleaner or something. So this part is always exciting. My ‘to go’ mic for recording vocals at this time is a Heil PR-40 (it has a very wide frequency range and just the right amount of lows, mids) thru an ART tube pre, into the Focusrite Pro 40 interface, then into Reason 8. Getting it right in the mix is a genuine PITA sometimes, for me it is at least. I usually use some de-esser patches in Reason to tame the highs a little then add fx which I think best fit the song. On ‘Grim’ most vocals are somewhat saturated & distorted because these songs are murky, gloomy, a little dark, you name it…all in all, songs like these just ask for some ‘noise’, in a good way. Thanks again!

Very nice sound !!!

I love the overall atmosphere of the tracks, I have definitely to listen to them in a quieter environment…

This voice…
It reminds me of another artist, but I cannot pin it.
Beautiful !

Thanks! Andrea was delighted to read your feedback on her voice. Btw, at some point by someone her voice and style were likened to Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches and Katie Lee of Braids.

^^

No, I don’t know Chvrches or Braids much… It’s earlier than that, from the Trip-hop years I’d say, so around '97 I guess…
One day it will pop in my mind, and I’ll tell you
But Andrea really has something special in her voice… I wish you the best, both of you !!

Bought it ! The wine is on me !

Wow, thanks so much!

For what it’s worth… On some tracks, I was almost expecting some kind of dirty filter on the voice, as if it was listened through an old FM radio… Still natural, but transformed. That could be an idea for giving some tracks different atmospheres…

Your album made me want to listen to My Brightest Diamond’s “Bring me the workhouse” and St. Vincent’s “Actor” again… Reminds me the time when I was in Belgium…

This is beautiful music! The voice has a lot of character, flows like a river and fits very well in the mix… Great!

Thanks for the info on vocal recording. Nice sound on these tracks  Finally pretty happy here with vocal sound ITB after finding Sly-Fi’s Kaya plugin + Fabfilter Saturn. Was never really happy with ITB saturation/tape/amp sims on vocals before that combo. Now I don’t use any real tape at all at the moment and just a little grit on Pre 73 going in to computer. My interface is Pro 40 same as yours, and I have one of those Art tube pre you mentioned too that I’ve only been using for live vocals, I’ll try recording with it… Sounds great with your mic/singer

Hey, I’ve been listening to this at work and I quite enjoy it. Really dig the weird percussion and rhythmic elements.

It’s ok  I gave you a tiny tip - zero is no fun for a fellow musician

I like the starvation track.
I agree, Andrea has a nice voice.
Good job!
I reposted on an FB group.
