Set the multi port to audio
Make sure nothing is plugged into the multi out port.
Press com and turn the light grey knob to switch the port to audio
Switch to track 13. Set input to the audio input to the jack. Turn up drive, level, and mix all the way.
Program a kick drum pattern on track 1. Press the 3 under the screen, then press shift, and turn the jack send to 99.
Now go to the sound you want to side chain. Set the LFO to element. Set the source to the input that looks like the mic, turn the amount all the way up and the setting you want to follow the kick drum.
Now patch the multi out to the audio input to hear the effect.
Even easier method and still allows full functionality of tape track:
Go to lfo page of the track you want to sidechain, select tremolo
Tempo sync the rate
Keep vibrato at 0
Adjust volume to taste for amount of sidechain
Keep envelope in the middle
For envelope shape choose the exponential envelope ramp
Et voila, it is just a tremolo modulating the volume rather than a true sidechain but achieves a pretty close effect. I use the same method on the op-1 and op-z.
it seems reasonable that TE could add a real sidechain to the mixer in a future firmware? (or is it something that would be beyond the capabilities of the cpu?)
yeah but that way: 1/ you loose the LFO, which is the main interest of synths to make them interesting and 2/ you need to have to type in notes each time the kick kicks. Ie you are not on the sustained part of the notes.
Anyway, it’s good that there are several options, we can choose whichever fits bets our competence and workflow )
Works fine for me on sustained parts of the notes - hence syncing the LFO rate to tempo. If I want to modulate pitch and/or panning and I’m already using the LFO for the pseudo-sidechain then I just use step components.
It is cool we’re all figuring out different workarounds, obviously would be ideal if TE could just implement a dedicated sidechain control like on the Deluge so we don’t sacrifice functionality of LFO or Tape etc.
