LISTEN / WATCH : aswefallintostatic's Reel-to-Reel sessions thread

@marijn - thanks again  im really glad you like it! Im going to start havig a play with getting some funky bass next i think haha !

@marjin, funky bass is on hold for the moment im afraid (i am umming and erring about looking for an Oberheim DX to do it properly) for the moment, here is a more techno orientated offering. As usual based on am improv using the Moog Sub 37 and Elektron machinedrum with bits of OP1 goodness in there (spot the OP1 ‘woop’ sample…)

@aswefallintostatic Tom this can’t be an improvisation it’s far to good for that. both sound design and track construction is very good! Really love it. Thanks for sharing this GREAT track! As for the bass… keep us posted about the Oberheim

@marjin - thanks man! This one is only based on an improv as opposed to being 100% improv. The workflow is more abotu recording improvisations to capture those ‘moments’ then working with them to add the detail that makes a finished track.

In this case, the moog, beats (including, glitches / processing etc…) and ambient bits are all one simeltaneous improvised take. I did a few other takes of the same piece after that were tighter, but didnt have the ‘feel’ of the first one. I layered up some details like the piano and the ‘woop’ in logic. Normally it helps to do everything in one session as it keeps the ideas fresh. I try to finish a piece in a day, then come back to it a few days later with fresh ears to make any arrangement tweaks and mixing adjustments.

I have serious gas for the Oberheim, but im trying to work out if there is anything about the hardware that gives it a ‘sound’ or if im just enticed by the hype and in fact any 12bit sampler will do the same job (or even spending more time with the MD E12 synths which have so far not had much magic to them to my ears)

@aswefallintostatic Cool to read about your workflow as it seems fully out of the digital spectrum after the notes are played. Do you have an example of the sound you are trying to accomplish? Read that There are 909 EPROMs available.

yeah, i saw that also, and 808 i think. Loading eproms is certainly hands on…!

Regarding sound im after something pretty generically 80’s and funky. Linndrum is way too expensive and Oberheim seems like the main alternative for getting that sound!

This kind of vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCW1QVXqPAA

Hey!

I invited a few friends to come over and get involved in a Reel-to-Reel live session.

https://soundcloud.com/aswefallintostatic/reel-to-reel-tape-24-reunion-tom-adams-variation

One of my friends is a film maker and created this short edit of the day to the track that you can check out here: https://vimeo.com/120971917

I hope you enjoy!

loving the “sickly” arpeggiator stuff going on @aswefallintostatic

reel to reel is so tempting, but I’m moving sooner rather than later and all that old stuff seems to use power supplies for their country/region. Maybe once I’m settled in Australia, though then I’d have to get tape and my source of good/well-priced tape is back here in the US, and hellaciously expensive shipping and… yeah.

Part of the reason I’ve mostly phased out my 488mkII. I love The Beast but she’s going to be expensive to feed some day :frowning:

@KrisM - yeah, it is kind of expensive, but its worth it for the sound / workflow i think! New tapes abotu £25 from thomann, assuming you have the reel already so its ok, i need a new one every 2-3 months i find.

@aswefallintostatic I wonder if you have any material that has been layed to tape and digital, as to compare the sonic qualities of each.

@Kites - i do all my capture direct to tape then record it in to logic so im afraid i dont  The reason i do that is so that everything im mixing has got the same colour/ saturation to it which tends to make the mixing easier as everything just sits alongside each other more easily. I have tried to do this with tape sim plugins at the beginning of the AU chain, but its not as effective as you can hear them working as an effect rather than just tonal coloration. The compression you get is similar however!

Been sleeping, some really nice rich and warm stuff going on here. Nice work! Just browsing now, but I know I’ll have to give it the full chilling later tonight listen!

such brilliant sounds - been enjoying your music for a while, but nice to revisit it. just bought the ep - great work! let us know if you come to brighton to play! hell maybe i should organise that… yeah?

Great stuff man, always good to hear a namesake do something incredible

Regarding tape - do you have any idea what I would be looking for if I wanted a system that would make splicing (relatively) easy? I’d love to graduate from virtual tape-op to legit tape-op - even if it’s just for the occasional change of vibe/scenery.

Hmm better start saving some pennies for that lovely Ampex tape

@speckdrum - thanks for picking up a copy of the EP, i’m glad you enjoyed it  I’m working on an album at the moment, i’ll post some links here when it is up and running! I have played in Brighton once before at the ice weather for airstrikes festival, would love to come and play again sometime, its a good vibe down there

@HelloOperator - I have kind of avoided tape splicing so far, so i’m afraid i dont have any particularly useful advice! I find it much easier to chop everything up in Logic as if i mess up i can always re-import from tape again  Let me know if you try it out, i would love to hear how it goes! I keep meaning to experiment with a few basinski style tape loops at some point…

Hey guys, been a while so apologies for the lack of update. I recently invested in some nice vintage pre amps (REDD.47’s) and have been experimenting with some ‘of the era’ recording techniques. I got really inspired reading up on people like al schmitt and things liek hwo kind of blue was recorded etc… I gave it a go and have mostly recording stuff in mono, tracking direct to tape and mixing things either hard left / right or centre in the 3 track style of the 50’s. Have a listen see what you think!

Two piano takes, panned L and R, possibly a bit stressful but for one track i liked it. Bass went in the centre which sort of holds it together.

Experimented with a two mic technique on drums, mixed dead centre in mono and run through a stereo reverb. I quite liked the results. I did a bunch of stuff with parallel compression as well which is kind of fun but still something i’m getting to grips with

Gorgeous.
Mono panning feels really weird, though, at times. I like it when it produces some kind of delay effects, then you forget it. But at the very beginning or at the end it feels like an ear is kind of under pressurized…

@LyingDalai - Thanks man!

Yup, i felt that about the multi tracked mono piano panning, it is more of an effect than a particularly useful way to record piano. Still, interesting process for me, i’m really getting in to more minimal approaches to recording stuff, its fun limiting yourself in that way (that, and i only hve two nice pre amps and a small handful of mics so im not in a position to do more complex recording… haha)

A piece for drum machine and piano with electronics

I am expecting a roland 201 to arrive this week so expect some ott space echo pieces soon as well

Hey guys, the 201 arrived  it is super lush!

Here is a track processing piano through the 201 and thats it:

And here is a bit more of a full on track, again piano through 201, but with some texture from the montreal assembly count to 5 and some live drums:

As always, any questions, let me know!
