New OP-Z Footage!

slightly retro? (from a 2013 Time article)

$199 still sounds like a lot for a handheld.
$199 is a lot of money, especially with the PlayStation 4 ($399) and Xbox One ($499) threatening wallets in November, but to recapitulate: the eight-year-old PSP costs $99, the 3DS XL weighs in at $199, and even then, the Vita’s far closer — and superior, gaming-wise — to a device like Apple’s iPhone 5, a smartphone that retails, unsubsidized, for between $650 and $850. Up front, $199 for the Vita sounds more than reasonable to me.

Isnt the op-z the same shade of grey as the original Atari Lynx? (Oh, how many batts i burned playin Klax!)

I don’t think it’s fair to compare the price of op-z with the price of products that sell millions of units.

Man, I wish I had an Atari lynx. I had an OG Gameboy, colour, and an advance SP. Now I have a DS lite still… Would love to get another OG to get nanoloop mono one day.

my sweetwater rep got back to me after i told him about the b&h ship date… i’m 100% sure b&h is the right date. sweetwater doesn’t know anything, first he had told me a long time ago it would ship in april. now he’s saying sweetwater always had a shipping date of may. so they don’t know what they’re talking about. its very obvious they haven’t heard anything from TE in months.

Ill bet sony wished it had sold a few million! Of course ya spot on, and my example/point was a clumsy one devoid of context. My beef is two things though; 1. How much does it cost to actually manufacture the op-z? Because, like it or not, all TE products (par the PO series) are all at least 30% more expensive than they need to be. The Op-1 (which i bought from amazon 3 years ago for £630) is a good example. A beautiful and creatively inspiring machine, but is it worth a thousand euros? Of course not. The speaker is cheap (mine has blown out from 30% volume usage max!), the headphone/connector board is terrible (still an issue with even the latest production run, apparently)...My point here is you may pay a premium price but the product is not manufactured to a premium standard. So, secondly, i believe music-gear buying folks (myself included) lose sight of the price of equipment. It starts with buying a Volca for £100 and before you know it ya looking at a Mellotron Micro and thinking "well, its not a grand". A new dvd player can be bought for the price of the TE unbranded ariel (i bought an identical from amazon for £1.50), as can the 4-disc Miles Davis Bitches Brew boxset. Ive lost sight of just how much things really cost, and im someone who isnt on a good wage. But if the op-z is really priced over half a thousand sterling, then you might as well get a sweet cocaine habit going as well, cause youve more money than sense. The best value bit of gear ive ever bought is a Tascam dp-32sd btw, half the price of the TE telly remote op-z.

@jim
Looking at its history of fragile components, it being unable to withstand rough handling, and the odd glitches, the OP1 is probably not very expensive to manufacture anymore. The cost goes towards the design expertise that has gone into it (I think we can all agree it’s very well done in that regard), towards sustaining TE as a company (a small shop overall), and towards the status badge of making music with quirky instruments. The increased cost is probably to do with the devaluation of money on the whole, over the last decade. Also fair to assume that hardware engineers at TE have changed enough to warrant the production and support of this particular model being more pain for TE than it used to be.
It’s not worth your time comparing OP1 or OPZ to anything manufactured on an industrial scale. If you ever look into modular, where the prices have nothing to do with the actual BOM totals, it’s very obvious.

@jim I agree that premium price should also have premium quality. I bought my op-1 in december 2017 and have not had any problems yet (fingers crossed). I expect the op-z to be a good quality product. For me the best thing about TE products is the instant fun feeling and I hope op-z will be as fun as my po’s and op-1. That itself is worth lots of money.

it kinda hit me the other day how much development is prolly going into this.

ppl like to point to the no screen as some point that it should be cheaper or whatever
but then i was like. oh but they still are developing a whole iOS app world for that
that takes time and ppl and costs money and stuff.
oh and they are developing on a video platform too
that also takes time and ppl and costs money and stuff.
oh its also a crazy synthesizer, sequencer
has usb host (??), midi, cv, and lighting stuff? maybe other things that i’m not aware of.
that also takes … you get it…

thats a lot of different things from a lot of different angles
that prolly requires a lot attention towards getting working
all in simpatico.

kinda made me understand why its taking them seemingly “so long”

Can we just rightfully turn this thread into a nostalgic Retro gaming trip until we have some solid new info on the opz. I feel like it’s a good use of our rights.

We certainly can!

I added a “Creature From The Black Lagoon” pinball table to my studio last weekend. Needless to say, not much music is being played

Nanoloop mono on the gameboy is the best! Till op-z hits the streets :).

That sounds so fun. I don’t have a pinball table OR a studio to put one in at the moment…

I’m more of a nanoloop 2 on GBA/DS guy. Much more diverse sound. Mono still has its charms though!

I have never seen anything plugged into the 4 mini jacks on the top of the unit, has anyone else?

FINALLY (what I presume) the last announcements with all the final information!
Superbooth, here we come!

Hate being negative, but it sounds terrible.

yaeh it doesn’t really sound great not recorded line in with a cellphone camera. no bass at all

imagine that

I think it sounds pretty promising tbh. Obviously it’d be good to see if the synth engines can go deeper but I’m into it already.
