I have the TE case, and while I don't regret the purchase, I wouldn't say it offers a lot of protection. Every time I pick it up I feel the encoders click. Perhaps a design that somehow protected the encoders (possibly with a closed cell foam chamber?) would be perfect. (I got into sewing Gameboy cases for a while. Great fun, but I was getting into sewing machine territory and I have enough hobbies as it is!)
I have a UDG case (http://operator-1.com/index.php?p=/discussion/130/cases-for-op-1/p1) but this soft case will be great to keep it dust free and protected around the house. Looking forward to receiving mine! 
That UDG case is very protective for travel etc though.
