OP-1 Dr. Wave Graphics Freezing

I recently bought a brand new OP-1. Out of the box Dr. Wave showed continuous fluid graphics regardless of sound output however now after a short time the graphics freeze once no sound is being made by the synth engine. Naturally this makes synthesis on this particular engine frustrating.

This issue is also described here http://op-101.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/dr-wave-critique.html

How does Dr. Wave work for everyone else?

How full is your OP-1? If you have a full tape/full album/ full synth and sampler patches, it may cause the graphics to slow down.

Thanks for the reply. completely brand new out of the box. completely empty aside from default stuff.

I was just playing around getting to know the synths with maybe about 1 hour use when I noticed encoders weren’t changing graphics of drwave and once I played a key to see what was happening the wave graphic quickly refreshed.

All other synths have graphical changes when no sounds are playing.

I’m guessing you can see the graphics change even while not playing sounds from drwave?

how so?

My Dr Wave only “moves” when sound is playing too (unlike all the other synth engines). I usually plug in an endless sequence and leave it running while I design my patch. (My assumption was this engine perhaps has a display bug).

This

Here it also freezes. Doesn’t bother me to be honest. Didn’t knew it till your post. Why would you tweak when there is no sound playing?

It makes working with sounds with a short decay a nightmare. The graphics jump all over and I constantly forget where I am sonically. Might aswell not have the graphics atall.

You have got a point here.

If the memory is totally full it affects the performance of the graphics, not sure how to explain it in a different way. Just like any computer I guess.

Getting a replacement from retailer tomorrow (nice guys, they insisted)

Will post back tomorrow with outcome but after hearing from you guys I’m sure it’s a common software related bug. It surely can’t be intentional especially when you can edit all other synths and witness a graphical representation of what you’re doing sonically.

Thanks to all that have commented. Much appreciation from me.

mine sometimes does one sometimes the other. not really sure the reason, never really thought about it. i think i just assumed it was because of where i was at w/ the settings.

use your ears more if your eyes deceive you. have fun with it. its an op1 after all. its so much fun. just let go. its not gunna be an exact science even w/ the graphics any way you slice it.

Quick update: went to retailer opened another brand new op-1 and tested with them. Same bug/quirk happened, as well as it having a non functioning key. Needless to say I’ve decided to stick it out with my original.

Great advise from docshermsticks above. gunna run with it and get the sonic juices flowing.

Hopefully one day it might be patched and make the dr wave experience a little more coherent.

Wow, new OP-1 with non functioning key? Have read that several times…

This thread reminded me to check this blog, and fair enough, this flaw in Dr Wave is noted. Well worth a read.
