hey – I’m a long-time user of the OG-1, however I could never actually use it to record audio because of the “CPU noise” that would always be captured when recording from the external input (that weird digital background noise… IIRC it was explained as certain circuits being located too close to the CPU and picking up interference from there).
Anyway, I’m considering picking up the OP-1F to use it as a portable 4-track recording setup, however I’d need it to actually work in that context (ie not have horrible noise in the background of anything I’m recording via the mic or line-in).
Can anyone verify that you can record into OP-1F without noise? (ideally this is someone with an OG-1 as well so you know what I’m talking about)
hello there. im a longtime user of both devices and i must say ive never had any noise issues with EITHER device. the og1 (which i just tested again to make sure i wasn’t going insane) doesn’t have any audible noise if i simply record a silent room. likewise with the op1f, no noise.
that said, the op1f mic is incredibly good, a lot better than the og1 mic. the op1f mic i often use it to record guitar and if you get the distance and orientation correct it sounds really full. the og1 mic i only really used for sampling elements that i was going to manipulate with effects or for rough takes, as it doesn’t have nearly the dynamic range as the op1f mic.
about the noise, ~10 years ago this was pretty common knowledge, I didn’t think it was just my unit. I can’t find a ton of references on this forum, IIRC it was the previous incarnation where I first realized it was a common problem.
ah ok! so that was the op1 mark 1 model. the og og lol. i have the rev2 model from i want to say 2018? but in any case the op1f mic is incredible for what it is. it exceeds my excitations routinely. check out Novak the Enjoyer’s Hallucinations video on YouTube. all his guitar work was recorded on the built in mic. its really clear and full.
The one that I watched shows him using the TE CM-15 mic when recording the guitar part. The title of the video is: “Behind The Curtain, The Tools, The Thoughts, The… “Hallucinations” - A Cinematic Feast”. He has some videos specifically about the CM-15, which he obviously really likes.
i’ll let him chime in and keep me honest but IIRC i spoke with him and he said the acoustic guitar parts were using the built in mic. he even went so far as to say he prefers the built in mic for some things.
no question the cm15 is all around a better mic and novak is certainly a huge fan of it no doubt
Well, in the video I cited, he is clearly seen with his guitar in hand and the CM-15 set up for recording. I suppose it is possible he had it there as a prop but was actually using the built-in mic.
I am sure the built-in mic is fine, but the CM-15 is in the same ballpark costwise as the OP-1 Field, so folks should know if it was being used or if the internal mic on the OP-1 Field is really THAT good. It may well be.
yeah the cm15 is an incredible mic. i use it almost daily. the built in is likewise incredible but of course not nearly the dynamic range as the cm15. i like the built in for things that are amenable to some compression and not super delicate. in these cases, the cm15 can be sometimes too sensitive and too dynamic and i get extra stuff in my recordings that i dont want or need.
I have what I believe to be the whole field eco-system: the OP-1 Field, OP-XY, TP-7, TX-6, and CM-15. It is reminiscent of what Sony used to make (and maybe still does?). They made small, very high quality stuff such as recorders, and other hand held stuff.
Now, TE has basically made studio quality hand held stuff. The OP-1 Field and OP-xy each represent an entire studio from start to finish.
The CM-15 is a studio quality mic and certainly priced up there with products of similar quality but completely self-contained in a hand held package (containing even the preamp).
The TX-6 is a quality mixer that I am finding I use more and more.
The TP-7 is a quality recorder with unique capabilities. I really used it primarily for guitar practice since recording oneself is really important especially when you don’t have another person such as a teacher to crituqe your playing. I prefer it to other products because you don’t have to mess with it to make a simple recording. Just press a button and you are off and running.
So, to me, these products fill a rather unique niche that can justify the price tag IF that niche is useful to you as the buyer.
100% - these devices are worth the price imo. i think their simple appearance fools people on the internet that they are not serious but the irony you’ll have to buy one to appreciate how un-toy-like they really are
I think at least some of the complaining about price is from people for whom these products would be just what they need, but can’t afford. When one considers the price, it really does add up to a lot. You can buy a lot of other quality stuff for that same price, but it isn’t the same (not better or worse, but decidedly different).
