I’ve been building a mod for the original OP-1 and 1.0 is out. Video first:
Repo with the patch, apply.py and the manual: GitHub - j3threejay/op1-mod: Unofficial feature mod for the original OP-1 (patch for stock firmware 246; bring your own official file). KEYS engine, TRACK piano roll, six effects, TIDE LFO. Not affiliated with teenage engineering. · GitHub
What’s in it:
- KEYS, a tine / reed / clav electric piano engine. No samples, six voices
- TRACK, a piano-roll sequencer with a grid. Nudge, swing, loop length, quantize, and it records chords
- Six effects with their own screens: CRUSH, BELL, MOON (phaser / Uni-Vibe), MIMIC (tempo-locked delay), LINGER (plate with freeze), SPIN CYCLE (rotary, stereo on the master)
- TIDE, an LFO with phase, skew and free / key / beat / tape sync. It can drive the new effects
- Chord mode on top of stfj’s scale patch. I moved the scale code in memory so it stops crashing some units, and fixed the scale tables
- Click any knob to latch Shift, and MIDI CC on most knobs
How it installs: it’s a patch you apply to your own copy of TE’s 246 with a small Python script. Nothing of TE’s is in the repo, and te-boot isn’t touched. The source isn’t public yet, the repo has the patch and the installer.
Going back to stock: switch any sound off the new engine, effects and LFO first, then flash stock. No factory reset needed.
It’s its own patch on 246, so it doesn’t stack with op1r, op1-workshop or OPUS. Pick one.
Built in C with a lot of help from Claude, tested in an emulator first, then on two OP-1s of different hardware revisions.
Happy to answer questions. If you want an email when there’s a new build: OP-1 Mods: Unofficial Firmware Mods for the Original OP-1 | Justin Joe
