Has anyone heard of this type of issue? My OG-1 worked perfectly up until about a week ago. Then, it restarted when I tapped the power switch lightly. Now I’m realizing it will sometimes restart when I plug or unplug a 3.5mm connector to the input or output. Any ideas or links to similar issue?
Maybe flex cable or connector board. Does this help - Teenage Engineering OP-1 Connector Board Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide
or
You can also replace the switch and connectors individually if you are happy with smd soldering. (I bought spare switches and connectors to try to keep my op1 going for a good number of years - just have them in my parts box - they only cost pennies)
Thank you, this is a great start. I don’t mind soldering if need be.
What would you suggest as a way to diagnose the issue? I see that I can pop open that cover. Could there be physical damage I’d see causing this?
easiest way is to get a multimeter and start testing connectivity of your power switch
honestly, might just be dirty and need a cleaning?
if it was me i’d try cleaning first, then if that doesn’t work, replacing.
i cleaned my power switch a bunch of years ago w/ a similar kinda thing happening
haven’t had any issues since
Great thinking, thanks! I’ll start by hitting the switch with some Deoxit and working it in. That stuff does work wonders.
The switches are know to fail ! The only confounder is that you said using one of the jacks switched it off which made me also wonder about the flex cable/connector board but definitely start with the switch!
fosho
reseating the cable/connector is a good one too
never hurts to try the easiest things first
and then go from there
Reseating worked in my case, but in addition I had to remove the small white plastic cover from the power switch for good, because this caused the switch to come out of its position and the device to reboot. Now I have to use a pencil or something to reach the naked switch, but no more reboot issues.
I had pretty identical symptoms a little while ago (randomly turning off if you looked at it cross-eyed).
At first I thought I might be a battery problem. But eventually narrowed it down to a flaky power switch. I could really feel how “mushy” the switch action was once the plastic cap was off.
I swapped the whole I/O board. But I kept the old one and intend to replace the switch at some point so I can have a back-up.
just gunna share this again here
for anyone looking for the power switch part number
(and other parts too)
Hey, had the very same problem. this solution helped me out
You have to be careful though, cause the wires are very flimsy!

Had the same issue once, had to exchange the connector board … If you‘re still in warranty, it should be covered.
