OP-1 Tracks

@brunogola, I really like your vibe :slight_smile:

Great stuff, all! Really impressive.

Here's one done on the way to Berlin. Long flights + OP-1 = pretty good, actually.

Hmm.. embed not doing a thing? Just post the weblink, right?

Генcек - All Tomorrow’s Parties (The Velvet Underground & Nico)

Gear used:
Teenage Engineering OP-1 with:

  • CUCKOO’s patch package called OPINES (Nintendoish sounding synths based on the DR WAVE synth in the OP-1)
    -Samples of NES and C64
-Vocals (recorded with the OP-1’s internal mic)

Just starting to delve into the OP-1. I’d love some feedback on this track I made today! Everything is done inside the OP-1 and simply recorded to album and exported

My first excursion with the OP-1.

(of the ambient variety)

oops, double post.

@jjbbllkk lush track - what kind of headphones do you use on plane rides - i’ve tried recording on flights but i find that the nuances get lost in all the ambient noise

I thought let me make a 100% sample based track with the OP-1

Piano and base are the stock HI-Piano sample.
Drums HH etc.. are the stock Hortlax samples.
Vocals is a church quire sampled from the FM receiver.

No effects except some delay on the piano.

sloppy improvisation with my new nord drum 2, minutes before it died on me on the day of purchase

For sloppy that was pretty bad-ass!

I got bored and threw together a cover my favorite Grandaddy song in tape and bounced it straight to album

Was kinda inspired last night and made nice roughcut, which in turn I just now finalized. So fresh off the press.

A quite dreamy song that turns a bit grimm.
Everything was composed and played on the OP-1, afterwards each track is recorded into Cubasis for smooth fade-outs and a tiny amount of effects were used on the lead (phaser) and base (chorus)
Post-processing done with MasterFX mixing in 5.5% Pitch shifting —> 11% Reverb —> Compressor

Used synths and samples are:
String, FM, Digital, Flat Top (stock) drum/perc samples and my own voice. No mic screen was used so unfortunately that is audible.

And as time progresses I realize that I am in dire need of decent monitors and not an array of headphones ranging from shitty to pretty decent.

Hope you guys enjoy.

PS: Quick question, I always include some information on what synths and effects I have used, does this interest anyone or am I just wasting time including them in my Track info?

nope, not at all - always interested reading how people work/patch
cool track too! @Erhenius

Same here, I can’t say I am that used to OP-1 to recognize settings from hearing

Your info is quite useful : for instance, I almost never use the reverb cause it’s quickly out of control. Yours sounds really great, so I will try your settings.

Thanks mate for taking the time for dropping the information !!

Just to be clear, the Reverb is done in MasterFX which is an iPad app.

Like many people might say is that Reverb can get quite unruly really fast especially as a master FX and the trick is to use -just- enough. I am not professing I am a master producer, I mean I only have 11 tracks to my name, but I like to think that non-musicians/producers should say: “that sounds really roomy/eppic” rather than “whoa what an awesome reverb!”

My take on the OP-1 Spring reverb is that it almost sounds as if it was meant to be used to design different sounds, but I suppose spring reverbs were designed for that. Unfortunately you can’t use it just a tiny bit, it just has too much noise.

But I’m getting OT here, itś meant for OP-1 tracks, I’m happy people are finding it useful and I will continue doing it. For future reference, if you like anything and would like to reproduce it just pm me, I’d be honoured to share.

@tasmansea and @LyingDalai ,tnx, both of ya!

Ahah you're quite serious @erhenius.

I now realize I totally misread your sentence introducing MasterFX, in a foolish dream you had somehow found your secret way towards unlocking a divine reverb in OP-1 !! For now I mainly use it to get some awful saturation on dirty sounds :D
I just cannot find the -just- enough setting for this one : let's say it clearly, this effect is really poor on OP-1.

That's for the part where I was overwhelmed by the reverb. I was being a little bit naive, I can see that now ^^

I really like how you twist the voice, I have to try it ! Mangle !!
:D

I think you would like some early Cliff Martinez soundtrack work, like his score for Sex, Lies, and Videotape, which is heavily influenced by the great Brian Eno (Eno’s music was temp music for that film)… @Dava

All the tracks here are so inventive. I think that’s what I like best about the OP-1: It pushes me in directions I’d never go with standard equipment, especially the tape, which encourages experimentation. What really intrigues me is that such a digital device is responsible for music that often doesn’t sound digital.

Here is a track I thought I’d throw in. It was mostly to test a sweet Boss DR-110 I bought off ebay, and it’s triggering a Volca Keys; funny how gear from the early 80s is communicating with something new. The OP-1 is assisting with the melody, bass, and sweeping drone. I recorded this all to a Tascam DP-008, so no DAWs were used. I’m a big fan of mixing on the fly without automation, and trying to play by hand as much as possible for a human feel.

Also, I’m having a devil of a time getting the player to embed in my post. Any clues, anyone? I’m new to Soundcloud, and I’ve never posted a track before. For now, I just threw the link in there, because the embed code didn’t want to work.

Edit: I finally figured out from other posts that we just post the link, and not the embed code.

Little taste of the tape I have coming out in 2015! (All OP-1)
