OP-1 VIDEOS

I’d agree that having some kind of LCD, or maybe even an app would make me use the beatstep more- I particulary dislike not being able to figure out what tempo your on. That being said, I still feel it being very usefull as the glue to my gear in many ways, and in ways I haven’t explored yet. And now with the latest update, I now know the encoders can tweak things on a Brute, I’m more gung-ho. So maybe the Beatstep just needs more time to develop.

My 2 year old (!!!) hip hop tutorial… WU!

@Kites I agree with Erhenius that the beatstep could do with an lcd readout to say what not is being played - this would be very handy.

Although one of the things I like about the beatstep is that it’s good for experimenting and coming up with stuff you’d not normally churn out purely because you are not tied to notes - if that makes sense.
The fact that it’s hands on and you can at a touch turn on/off pads in the sequence makes it a hundred times quicker and easier to jam with than the OP-1 which needs more “programming” than “live jamming”.

The Beatstep can also double as a midi controller.

I have mine sitting behind the OP-1 on my desk in front of me in front of my DAW. Means i can easily use it for sequencing synths or quickly assign knobs in Ableton Live.

It is worth the money - it’s hardly going to break the bank.
If you are lucky you could grab one on eBay cheaper?
  • you could use the Beatstep in controller mode to assign knobs to be able to control the 4x CC ins that the OP-1 allows.

I actually have one, I've just been trying to figure out how to use the knobs to control the op-1 and minibrute.

Would you list the steps on how to control the op-1, please?

Kites, I’ve never done it myself but here’s a little demo … looks simple enough …

I kinda disagree. have a listen to the last track I made, its the last post in the Tracks thread (Voices). There I did the bongo’s live with the sequencer running on hold, it was recorded in 1 go. I mistakenly added claves and rimshots too accidentally but it worked out pretty good.

The track after that (Sampled Hope) has the High hats and claves (of different pitches) done live with again the pattern sequencer running on Hold. The only thing I did was cut parts off afterwards for “dramatic effect”.

Though, of course I do agree that adding/removing notes is easier on the beatstep but imho I find the pattern sequencer superior to the Beatstep sequencer. If the Beatstep could do multipart than it would be a different story…

Yeah if beatstep could do multi-part it would be a winner!

Thanks for posting that space that, I’ll have to check out the beatsteps manual to see what CC is what on the encoders, because I think I tried the exact steps on the video with the OG ICM , and the encoderson on Beatstep wouldn’t respond on the op-1.

Oh, this is probably why… Ha.

Here:
Time to pull up the software.

Found a clip of Amason using OP1s in a live performance, similar to the one teenage engineering mentioned in their blog.

^awesome. we were discussing in another thread how its suprising we dont see more rappers just banging out freestyles/beats with an op1!~ and there be my man donald glover. his standup is awesome!

Now that I have an op1 I see them everywhere. Tame Impala also uses an op1 for drums sometimes!
