OP-XY basic questions

Ok I’ve found the answers by myself

  1. It has to be set on the brain fx track (2nd module).
  2. Yes while playback is active the bar button must be pressed to select the bar and it will then stay there. Unfortunately it has to be done every time the playback is stopped and restarted.
  3. So there are track specific punch-in fx available on the track (shift+keys). On instrument track the low octave of keys control the track specific punch-in fx and the high octave keys are for the group specific ones. On the punch-in fx aux track the track specific effects are not editable.

Question:

I noticed that I sometimes am unable to use the skip trigger step component (the last one) as it is intended. In some sequences it just does not work at all except for the “0”/random setting. In other words when I try to set for example skip every 2nd or 3rd etc. it just does not do it.
Now, in other projects the same function works fine… So, pretty annoying, and I can’t figure out whey this would be the case.

Anyone noticed this behavior?

Any ideas how to trouble shoot this?
(I tried erasing the track sequence and starting from scratch, same issue.)

I am on the current firmware 1.0.25

Any thoughts y’all might share will be appreciated!

The step component skip parameter lock does not work (has no effect) if parameter automation shape is set to smoothing at any level >0. Do you think it’s intended because of uncertainty of next point interpolate to? Or is it a bug?

What’s the difference between putting step component skip trigger/1 (play every trig) on a step and not placing this kind of step component on that step?

I’ve found the answer by myself. When automation smoothing level is set to >0 then parameter skipping has to be set not only on trigger having fix points defined for but on triggers, too, between those points.

Thanks for posting back when you find the answers, that is very helpful to me.

How do you charge OP-XY or OP-1 Field? The manual and TE support say not to use other than 5V adapter. E.g. the Apple 20W phone adapter (with its 9V output) or similar strong adapters are not recommended. However with 5V adapters it takes ages to charge the battery of these devices.

I normally just plug it into my MacBook Pro since it’s conveniently on the desk I usually use my music gear on.

How triplets can be sequenced on OP-XY’s sequencer?

For some reason the "Brain is no longer working. I just had it working so I must have switched something off. I have the latest firmware, I know that it is not muted in the mixer and I have the desired tracks routed to the brain. When I go to the brain page it just says “C undefined” instead of showing a scale with black dots on the keys… I am sure I am overlooking something, but I cannot figure it out. I went to another project and the brain is functioning normally. I do not think something is wrong with the device, it is more likely user error.

The brain analyses the notes you’ve sequenced and then determines the scale (key and mode) that you’re using. If you have lots of notes that are outside of a certain scale, the brain cannot determine which scale you’re using, so will report “[KEY] undefined”. But that’s okay, it’s perfectly reasonable to use notes outside of one of the available scales, and you need to do that to get certain types of chords (augmented and diminished) and for certain scales like the harmonic and melodic minor. To avoid the brain getting confused, set the key/mode manually on the brain track:

  1. Set the brain to manual using encoder 1.
  2. Select your intended key with encoder 2.
  3. Select the mode you want with encoder 3.

Since a recent update, the brain options are defined on a per pattern basis, so you can have different patterns set to different scales.

Can you hold down a trig and change the pitch value for just that step/trig?.. For example, if I have a drum pattern sequenced, can I hold down just 1 snare hit and turn down the pitch, like you can on an Elektron box? It seems if I try to do this, it just pitches down the whole sample, not just the step I am holding. How do you achieve parameter locks? Do you have to record automation by physically recording knob movements?

I can get what i am describing to work on synths but not on samples/drums

So you can’t parameter lock pitch on the drum engine, but you could just copy that sample to another slot you’re not using, then have 2 copies of the sample, one pitched up and the other pitched down. If you’re on a more recent firmware, you can do this really quickly by holding the key for the sample you want to copy, then press M2 for copy, then press the key you want to copy it to, press and hold it and then press M3, then just pitch up that sample.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up for me… If my memory serves me the OP-Z was capable of doing this. I wonder why this is not the case with the OP-XY?

Either way Thank you again!!!

Just confirming that you cannot automate drum playback direction like on the Z? Param locking to quickly reverse hits was one of my favorite little tricks.

It very strange they dont have added sampler parameters as parameters lock, you can effect the parameters by LFO, so it’s strange … perhaps in the future update… untill then copy and paste to another slot.

I recently submitted a feature request to TE for them to add this… you should do the same. The more they get the more likely they’ll do it, I hope at least.

From my understanding, it’s actually a good thing when your battery “takes ages” to charge. It means you have a healthy battery! Once devices start charging from 0 to 80% in like 5-10 minutes, that’s when you know your battery is likely going out. The longer it takes to charge, the longer it will hold a charge, vise versa. Obviously there are many exceptions, but I just try to keep that in mind when dealing with a charger taking forever.

Is additional modulators in the lfo’s section a current possibility, or is it something TE is definitely never going to do, massively reducing the XY’s potential for sound design?
