It seems like this section of the manual hasn’t been written yet… is there some way to load sample files from a computer onto the XY?
some progress… I found that I’m able to see folders in ‘mtp’ mode on my mac, but I can’t make any changes to files, I just get error 36.
I also tried the ‘field’ app on the mac app store - but it doesn’t seem to launch…
I think I heard in the earlier version of FW this was working, but latest update has broke it.
On Windows 11 I’ve been able to copy subfolders into the Samples folder in MTP mode without issue, but can’t rename folders/files. I’ve seen that before so I assume it’s a Windows/MTP limitation.
I’ve found two important limitations but I’m sure there are more:
- Files cannot be longer than 20s
- File names cannot have brackets in them.
I have a bunch of Native Instruments samples and some specify the tempo in brackets (e.g., “Vocal[126] Augvox 1.wav”). These files will either refuse to transfer or will seem like they transferred but not be accessible on the XY.
Samples longer than 20s sometimes appear to have transferred but will not appear on the XY itself.
I’m hoping other people can help figure this out
i cannot get that far… what firmware are you running on the XY?
Are you using the Field app AND putting the OP-XY in MTP disk mode?
I’m on Mac. I can get FieldKit working and I can save individual samples into the user folder (within Samples) but can’t copy folder or create a folder without an error 36 message.
ok, using Windows 11 I can also copy samples in, but cannot seem to create/copy folders.
on Mac, using XY in Disk mode - I can’t really perform any file operation (error -36). If I try to run the Field app, nothing appears on screen (yet I don’t see any crash logs).
Running the latest XY firmware
I managed to copy over the better part of a pack from Splice… next I’ll see how usable it all is
It’s a bit unfortunate and hidden, but after starting, the field app only adds a menu bar icon. Clicking on that opens a menu that - with device connected - let‘s you activate it, which then opens a Finder-like window.
one note, i found op-xy and op-1f both finnicky via mtp with what and how many files they’ll accept at once. the readme file in the mtp root dir says op-xy will throw an error when trying to load files it can’t play. but, i found it would also accept files it can’t play at times, and the sample selection page would hang when trying to load those files into the sampler.
so what files does it accept?
what are the specs?
I have had no issue with the .wavs found on Splice for both loops and one-shots-though I would imagine issues with longer duration files.
No time stretching tho
HAHAHAHA a 2300$ device you cant load samples onto! TE at it again
You have to be careful about the folder structure when loading samples into the XY, took me awhile to realize this yesterday loading mine. You can only go one layer deep of nested folders, otherwise you’ll get an error.
So far I’ve had no issues with using wave or aif files at the most common sample rates and bit depths.
When I have FieldKit running on my Macbook, then put the XY into MTP mode, a Finder window into the XY automatically pops up showing the directory structure and a file named how_to_import.txt.
ADDED: The directory structure in my XY gets fupped uck when folder names extend too far into the preset name column. I’ve been able to avoid this by limiting folder names to about 14 characters and using all lower case characters, which take up less horizontal space than upper case characters.
The file’s contents:

when OP-XY is in disk mode you can add, remove, rename and backup its content.
changes you do to the files on this disk are reflected on the unit after you
eject the disk.
the disk contains three folders:
presets
projects
samples
if you copy a file to the disk, and get an error, it is usually that the file
has a name that OP-XY cannot use. or that this type of file cannot be stored in
that location on the disk.
only preset, project and sample files can be stored on the disk, and only in
their dedicated folders. for example, you cannot store a sample in the projects
folder.
you can create new folders, but only inside presets, projects or samples.
files and folders names may contain only: a-z A-Z 0-9 space # - ( )
plus a dot . for the file extension.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
samples
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this folder is for your samples.
when you sample on the OP-XY the samples are saved in samples/user.
in disk mode you can add your own samples, rename and organize them into
subfolders.
to add your own samples, just copy them into samples or a samples/subfolder.
OP-XY can use wav and aif samples, mono and stereo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
presets
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this folder is for your saved synth, sampler and drum presets.
when you save a snapshot on OP-XY, it is saved into the presets/snapshots folder.
in disk mode you can rename presets and create subfolders inside the presets
folder to organize them.
sampler and drum presets are saved in a folder with a name ending in .preset.
this entire folder is the preset, it contains the sample files. for example, a
drum preset named "drum" with a kick and snare will be a folder called
"drum.preset"
presets/subfolder/drum.preset/patch.json
presets/subfolder/drum.preset/kick.wav
presets/subfolder/drum.preset/snare.wav
synth presets that do not use samples can also be saved as a .preset folder, or
as a single .json file:
presets/subfolder/synth a.preset/patch.json
presets/subfolder/synth b.json
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
projects
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
this folder contains your projects.
projects/workspace.xy is the current project
OP-XY saves to the projects/user folder when you commit changes, and it keeps
the history in projects/user/backups. if you name a project "song" it will have:
projects/user/song.xy <-- this is the most recent version of the project
projects/user/backup/song.xy <-- this is a folder with the history
the projects/user/song.xy file is self contained, projects/user/backup/song.xy is
not needed unless you want to keep the history.
if you rename a project in disk mode, you probably also want to rename its
history folder inside backup.
samples are not saved with the project. if, for example, you want to open a
project on another OP-XY you have to also copy the needed sample files onto that
OP-XY.
Lol. I don’t mind that MTP is an option but I hate how there’s really no other way to gain access to all of the samples and recordings, at least it’s that way on the OP-1 Field.
Agreed. TE says it’s this fast transfer protocol and it’s achingly slow on the OP-1F and XY too.
um you are absolutely wrong. you cant upload samples, drum-kits and synth presets.
I can’t get any samples to show I have an extract of the medieval wavs from a EP-1320 and droped them into the sample folder (next to the user folder) in a folder named medieval with the wav’s under that. They conform to the naming scheme in the manual with no strange chars, but they just won’t show up.
I’ve put one single sample with the name a.wav that’s 2 seconds long and can’t get it to show either so I’m convinced it something I’m doing or missing. Any help?
