OP-XY - PD/Fast Charging?

Hey y’all. Excited new XY owner here!

Scared about plugging my device into my chargers at home, which are high-wattage fast chargers. Is there mention in the documentation about supported chargers?

I use an Anker 65W PD charger and my OWC hub which supplies 85W over USB-C with mine all the time, no issues.

excellent :metal:t2::metal:t2::metal:t2: thanks

From the TE online manual

be sure to charge the unit using only 5V usb power, such as that from the usb ports of a computer, or by using a dedicated usb charger.

I mainly use my MacBook Pro USB C output.

That’s actually really backwards for such an expensive device. I’ll just carry a dedicated 5v charger.

Yes I agree. I don’t know if it’s something to do with keeping the battery healthy by not fast charging it. I have a feeling I saw the same advice for the OP1-Field but I can’t find it now.

If the cable and the device don’t support fast charging, it doesn’t matter what current the power supply can deliver. A USB power supply will deliver 5 volts, so really, it is the CURRENT and the pin configuration as well as the capability of the device being charged that determine fast charging capability. I have a 45W fast charge supply that came with my cell phone. It does fast charge my cell phone (it shows that on the display), but also works well with my entire TE ecosystem, which does not support fast charging. Just because 45W is available, that doesn’t mean the device being charged will utilize that.

i’m not sure that makes sense considering plenty of devices get fried off of fast chargers. I’ve seen enough people get stung in the handheld emulator community as well.

I wonder why they’ve put that then? Makes little sense unless they’re being over cautious perhaps? I think I’ll stick with USB from Mac just to be safe.

Using a fast charger on a device that is not designed to benefit from fast charging will not harm the device. The charger will simply charge the device at a standard rate. Fast chargers are designed to negotiate higher voltages and currents with compatible devices, but if the device does not support these higher settings, the charger will revert to standard charging parameters, ensuring the device is not damaged.

good to know, thank you!

the XY is compatible with any type-c charger that supports usb power delivery and will negotiate the correct voltage / current. i’ll check if we can make the manual more clear about that.

Does it mean OP devices can be safely charged with standard Apple 20W chargers, too? It seems significantly quicker than using a standard 5V charger.

absolutely! i use an apple 35W dual port charger all the time.
the XY will max out at around 6W (5V / 1200mA) so any type C charger / port above that will provide power to charge the unit at max rate.

Thanks for the info. I asked this because Apple 20W charger specification states 9V/2.2A and some months ago I got the answer from TE support that only 5V chargers are allowed according to the description on their site. It’s strange to me and I’m a bit confused.
Anyway do you work for the company? You wrote about manual as something you had influence on it

thanks for the info Jens!

its because these types of usb-c chargers
are capable of both
5v for charging phones, tablets
9v for charging laptops and such

they provide the proper voltage depending on the device that is plugged in

Ok, thanks. Then I won’t be afraid to use Apple charger again
