OP-Z doesn't record all the notes on 128 steps loop

Hello,

I’ve noticed that the OP-Z doesn’t record all the notes I play.

For example, when I play eight notes over four beats, some of the notes are not recorded.

I tested this using the LEAD EP and BASS EP sounds and got the same result.
Changing the instrument as SAW didn’t helped.
I also tried using a MIDI keyboard, but the issue persists.

I deleted all step components using Shift + Stop and removed all step locks, but that didn’t solve the problem. I also adjusted the note length to 1/16 and 1/8, but the issue remained.

Additionally, I set the Note Style to Mono and tried different Quantize settings (0 and 10), but neither made a difference.

I checked the Permorfance track and deleted all the steps just in case
Same for the Tape Track.

After further testing, I figured out that the issue occurs when the loop length is set longer than 64 steps. In a new project with a shorter loop length, everything records correctly.

Has anyone else experienced this, or is there a known workaround?

Thanks!

It’s not clear if you are playing 8 notes individually or as a chord. I know there is some polyphony limits you may be hitting, and it might be worth checking in a DAW what is or is not actually being recorded as it may provide some more information.

Thank you for your reply.
I was playing notes individually.
I got the answer from teenage engineering.
“unfortunately, the OP–Z can handle a maximum 4 notes per step, and if you have 4 notes on all 16 steps for 4 bars this equals 64 steps: this might be the reason why you can’t record anymore after that!”

And that exactly the reason.

Yeah, that’s been my understanding as well. I was just playing around with a few things on my OP-Z, and if you press REC+PLAY, and then play a note, STOP. Repeat this four times to build up a chord, you’ll see that a fifth note is removed when you press just PLAY and see the notes that are displayed on the keypad.

If you hold the note for a bar, and add notes to the chord later, you can hear that it drops out anything over the fourth note. Reverb can make this a bit more confusing as the note can ring out a bit longer.

I suspect some other strange behavior I’m finding is from double triggers… but that’s a me problem

This is a bit embarrassing, but I have hardly used my OP-Z, so I am watching various threads here to learn more about it. I bought mine as a bundle with all those little boards and a yellow case that reminds me of the material the raincoat I had as a kid was made from. But soon after, I got a used OP-1 Field and spent my time with it. Then I got the OP-XY and just haven’t gotten around to the OP-Z yet.

your comment about loop length being longer than 64 steps is the answer here. this is consistent with my experience, which i believe is expected behavior. at an unmodified/original loop length (i.e. 16 steps) then there is no sacrifice in midi data “resolution.”

the opz is an incredible device and really powerful, but it does have it quirks. the “midi resolution” is not very high, so if you set the length of the pattern to 8x, meaning 8 times longer, you are now operating at 1/8th the resolution w/r/t midi data. there are some exceptions to this in the way certain punch-in effects are concerned, but when you are live playing, this is generally the rule of thumb.

the workaround is simply use more patterns in your “song/section” - so instead of using the 8x or 4x length on one pattern, just use 4 or 8 patterns. then you have no restrictions and can live play whatever you want.
