PO-12 demo unit, first impressions

Thanks @cuckoo for posting this and doing the subtitles. I’m looking forward to learning more about what this can do.

This thing would sell like hookers in Amsterdam if it would sync to the OP-1 via USB

thanks @cuckoo you’re the man

@raigan I didn’t use the subtitle function (that I now know exists :slight_smile: but rather used the annotations. I think there’s a button to turn on and off annotations, perhaps? This function is for computer users only, I think.

It does look super fun, but I was hoping for a nice case and design, I guess they are going the ikea camera route on this one.

Nah, they’ll turn around and sell us a $60 case for it, soon @YellowTangerine :wink:

@YellowTangerine Good to see you on the new forum homie!

Love the video cuckoo! Just saw it on synthtopia. I’m really hoping a casing comes out for it, so it would be a game boy sized device with a bit of protection? I know it’s only $50 bucks, but that doesn’t make it throwaway in my book.

Hey @trash, perhaps you could reduce the static electricity problem by wearing cotton socks, rubber soles and not dragging your feet on polyester carpet… The feet dragging is the big one for me, constant electric shocks when I touch anything, when I drag my feet.

I wonder if- being such a simple physical design- one might be able to solder leads from the various buttons to something like arcade style buttons in a homemade enclosure. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try, and at $50 this might be a good board to experiment with.

@KrisM I hope so, honestly.

@VF always lurking :)

@lymtronics I did something like that back in the days ... like 4 years ago ... with the WTPA Sampler. It was a barebones DIY Kit of an 8 bit sampler, my first sampler I ever had, even before the sp303 or op1. Only two sample slots of pure 8bit bliss.
After finishing the kit I soldered all the small push buttons and encoders included to the pcb, as one was supposed to. The kit worked perfectly. Later I decided to flesh the project out: Put the pcb in a big hammond box with arcade buttones, switches for circuit bends etc.

The main problem in the rehousing was to the desolder the components - I somewhat damaged the pcb in the process and the whole thing worked for maybe two months. I really loved the project, but it wasn't meant to be :/

What I am trying to say is: You need to plan these thing ahead, esp. if you are new to soldering. Even modern pcbs don't like to be desoldered, especially with these little buttons, they are somewhat of a pain to get off. It was A LOT of work and a huge cable spaghetti-mess, even with just these few buttons and switches. The end result was (while it worked) very cool and so much more playable than stock. Here is a dorky video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aVyCqNA93I

thinking of it - if the instrument is cool enough to warrant the effort, I might join you on the task... :)

Wow that’s awesome @yellowtangeine nice indeedy!

I hope the effects don’t change too much. Hi pass lo pass stutter and bit crush all sound ideal to me! I do appreciate the idea of it not being bloat ware too, kilobytes! Remember when Netscape fit on a floppy disk?

But definitely a casing.

@YellowTangerine That looks awesome. I’m not too experienced with the soldering iron, so it might be above my means. It’s cheap enough, though, I could see if it was any fun just to mess about.

I thought @cuckoo was talking about regular captions instead of video annotations, so I accidentally turned on automatic captions.

Nailed it.

@fzero Ha ha ha… yeah that automated caption nailed it. I’ll try to tame regular captions next time. Never tried it before.

TE were kind enough to give me a preproduction unit! And obviously I’ll make a preview, walkthrough, jam video very soon. Busy days, but stay tuned. =)

I just realised I have a real bad drum machine addiction…

I am buying a couple of these. I hope the audio in will allow some kind of sync maybe???

Thanks for the info/video

Human AND simian? Wow. technology these days.

I was also given one at Norbergfestival - will record a few overview videos soon.

My impressions so far:
The drum sounds are excellent
The FX are excellent
The built-in speaker is cute
It’s fun to program
Parameter locks are intuitive and sound great

What I think it needs to be a fantastic drum machine for the masses:
Skip the audio in jack in favour of a volca-style sync24 jack.
