Returned my OP-XY

Thankfully I was able to return mine for store credit even though I had had it for a couple of months.

The amount of great gear I can buy is amazing. lol. I get it if you absolutely must have a battery powered device then maybe the OP-XY is worth it. But if you are planning on using it on a desktop most of the time, like me, then I didn’t think it is worth this kind of money. I already have an OP-1 Field and an OP-Z which are great for that.

Has anyone else returned theirs and felt the same or maybe they regretted it?

As someone who used to own an OP-Z, I can totally see how the OP-XY might feel a bit redundant if I already had an OP-Z in my setup.

I recieved my OP-XY two days ago and I immediately felt buyer’s remorse. However, once the muscle memory of the OP-Z came back to me, and once I grasped how crazy this thing can get, I began feeling more confident about my purchase. As of now I am really starting to feel that the OP-XY is a great fit for me (frequent traveler, making music more as a hobby then an artist). I may eat my words soon but at the time of this reply I have no plans on returning it.

I relate.

I never had the OPZ so the OP-XY is a new workflow for me. I had more creative fun instantly with the XY than I did with the OP-1f so I’ve kept at it in what limited time I have in my day to learn it. I did think about returning it as it feels so unfinished, but the return window passed.

The XY has bugs and, to me, the graphics are disappointing at this stage- some are boring (fx and mixer) and there’s tiny font. But every time I pick it up I make something I like so I’m going to stick with it.

I think it pairs well with the OP-1f and, once I know the XY very well, I’ll have a very powerful and fun setup to create with.

But it’s possible TE rushed the OP-XY release for holiday shoppers and it really needs some work. It just seems true that if a synth or groovebox is released and the internet forums are filled with excitement and praise it will be a more successful release in the long run. I think it’s difficult to overcome the negative impact of bad first user reviews. But, I don’t own a musical instrument company so…

I returned mine as well, but only because of the bugs and all the crashes I was getting. The OP-Z is one of my favorite bits of gear ever, and the XY really does take things up a notch in a way I appreciated (even if missing some of the Z’s functionality). I regret that I had to return it, as I really bonded with the workflow once I got used to it.

If they ever get all these crashes sorted for those of us who like to use our own samples in it, I’d happily purchase it again asap.

I might buy a used OP-XY later on if they fix these bugs. It’s definitely got a lot of potential. It was just too much money for something that I didn’t love.

Sounds like it might be a good device for you. Hope you enjoy it.

I imagine they will improve the UX at some point. I agree that it really seems rushed. The hardware and build quality seemed really good though.

I’m of the same mind. I take a lot of cues from Tarekith so if he returns a device that’s a good indication things need significant improvement and work.

If and when they fix them up, that’ll be great and I’ll be looking into a used one because frankly, after seeing what is done with them and their potential, I don’t see this being a $2000 premium upgrade over the Z, and I rather just buy my op-z again and deal with the double triggers

Overall though I think it’s because I am in love with the op1F and op1 workflow and design that I’m not overly concerned. I love my op-z but not as much as my op1 and I don’t want to experience the buyers remorse for something I only kind of want, don’t need and has a lot of issues rendering it returnable

But thanks for sharing your experiences , makes those of us hard on the fence comfortable with the choice

They (well Will from TE) mentioned in one of the live stream walkthroughs (Andertons?) when it launched that things like the effects graphics are just placeholders and they are working on new graphics.

No problem. I had a twinge of “returners’ remorse” but I think I made the right decision for me. The OP-Z (while much more limited) is still an amazing device and (IMHO has more interesting synth engines).

n terms of build quality, well the OP-Z is what it is. I kind of don’t care about double triggers anymore since I mostly use it to sequence anyways but the build quality on the OP-XY is amazing.

I’m still getting one; I have to at least try one for a while you know

As soon as I see one for under 1500 I’ll go for it
