sampling without holding down a keyboard key all the time?

hi! I’m trying to sample a little bit of scratching to my op-1. unfortunately the op-1 only records while the keyboard is pressed. But i need both hands to scratch - one for the vinyl, the other for the crossfader. So is there a way to sampling without holding a keyboard key? Am i missing something, or is there a workarround?
Thanks for helping!

maybe i need one of those ambient sequencers to do this…

I would just switch the white ear on, then hit record on tape and then do your scratches directly to tape.

hey yoof - thanks, this works and can i put the recorded sample to the sampler to play it with the keyboard keys then?

Haha, my solution would be similar to the AS-606, a small brass weight. Or would a clothes peg be strong enough? Or like @yoof suggests just record directly to Tape, chop up and drop into Sampler or Drum as required.

Only had couple of days on op-1 and don’t have it atm to check, but could you maybe set the auto-record threshold to a level and then use your mixer to hit that level when you wanna start sampling? Then trim it up a little after if needed?

Hey thanks @Callofthevoid but no - in sampler mode you need to press and hold a keyboard key AND hit the recording threshhold. But @yoofs suggestion works - record it to a empty part in tape mode - lift and drop to a sampler.

Yes, defo… I find it easiest to work with drum sampler so I usually trim down some material to be <12 seconds and then just lift the audio, go to a drum sampler and drop the audio. Then you can fine tune start and end points of samples assigned to keys.

Ah, that’s a shame. Can see that being a little annoying in a few situations that I’ll probably find myself in too. Tape workaround sounds OK unless/until TE tweak the OS in this area. But would be nice to be able to hit 2 handed keyboard chords and guitar stuff straight in to the sampler for example.

You can press shift and a note so you dont have to press the note all the time. But your sampled stuff will be erased if you turn you’r op-1 off. I think even if you switch the part. I don’t know if it’s a bug. You have to save your sample when you record this way.

Yeah! This also works. Great advice! Thanks mushroots

I got my OP a couple months ago and have used almost everyday since. So far I haven’t been stumped by it, there are several ways to do what I used to do with my previous samplers.

In this case I agree that the TAPE is the simplest option.
Keep in mind that when you record to tape first you can sample at a decreased tape speed, allowing for a longer drum or keyboard sample.

1. Press TAPE then turn white encoder counterclockwise to a slower speed
2. Record your line in to a tape track while set to the slower speed
3. Bring your speed back up to 1:1
4. Select a 12 second clip and LIFT
5. Switch to DRUM mode, select a bank that you want to write to
6. DROP the clip you lifted from the TAPE
7. Lower the pitch of each slice/key to your desired speed using the blue encoder

The audio quality is diminished/bit-crushed when you use this method, but it gives you a sound similar to 90’s era samplers (SP1200, EPS16).
The slower the tape speed you sample to, the crunchier the sound. It’s not ideal for every sound; percussion and reverb really don’t hold up as well as ambient or synth tones, vocal samples are a bit of a mixed bag.

If you want to add scratches to a finished track you can always record to RECORD then resample to a TAPE track, freeing up 3 tracks (bouncing tracks, basically).

Peace.

No issue with saving samples with this, great tip!

Funniest thing I've ever seen on any forum. I presume the toe is yours. And still attached?

Yes to both. Big toe tends to give fattest sound
