Syncing play/stop between OP-XY + OP-1F

Something I would have thought would “just work” but doesn’t seem to after a bunch of faffing around. Basically I want to be able to work on both the OP-1F and OP-XY at the same time and have transport sync’ed between the two, e.g.

  • pressing play on one is like pressing play on both simultaneously
  • pressing stop on one is like pressing stop on both simultaneously

Does anyone have this working or know how to get it to “just work”, either via bluetooth or via cables?

I’ve had no problem with this, both using Bluetooth and USB-C.

I’ve set it up with the OP-1F as sending master clock, with the XY set to receive.

I’ve been doing this as well. I have the OP-XY as master clock as I intend to sync another piece of gear as well. (not happening so far) anyway…
OP-XY:
Com>System>MIDI:
clock out, notes out, other out
active track channel 1
echo off

OP-1f:
Shift + Com>MIDI:
channel 1
clock in, notes in, other in
Tempo:
Beatmatch

All the sync I get is stop/start. There is no position information being sent so I can’t rewind the tape from the OP-XY.
If I choose Tempo>MIDI Sync in the OP-1f, the tempos sync but pressing Play on the OP-XY starts the tape from the beginning every time.
If I choose Beat Match on the OP-1f I need to set the tempo manually but then I can press start on the OP-XY and start the tape at any spot.

Maybe check in the OP-XY under Com>Devices and choose the OP-1f to make sure the settings there are correct.

All this comes with the understanding that I struggle a lot with the MIDI connections on the TE stuff. I’m frustrated this morning trying to get everything working the way it did last evening.

Thanks for the replies here folks. I’ve managed to get this almost working but not all the way. The one thing I cannot get to work is have the OP-1F accept a “play” message from another device. I tried all the midi sync options (e.g. beatmatch etc) in the metronome settings. But these 3 things all work:

  • PLAY on OP-1F causes OP-XY to play
  • STOP on OP-1F causes OP-XY to stop
  • STOP on OP-XP causes OP-1F to stop

but I cannot get PLAY on the OP-XY to get the OP-1F to play so far. I even vibe-coded a MIDI router for my Mac that echoes PLAY/STOP messages from one USB MIDI device to others and I got the same behavior there (e.g. everything works except for sending PLAY to OP-1F).

Interestingly, I also discovered that the MIDI message that the OP-1F sends when you hit PLAY is actually the MIDI “continue” message, whereas OP-XY and OP-Z send MIDI “start” when you hit PLAY. But even trying sending MIDI “continue” or MIDI “start” to the OP-1F won’t make it play.

Of course, this does mean you can just use the OP-1F as the master transport control since the other devices seem happy to obey its PLAY message. But would be super nice if could solve the “all play buttons work on all devices” problem

this is very interesting and confirms my odd findings with trying to get the op1f to play nicely with midi with various devices. can i bug you to try something? if you hit PLAY on op1f with the tape maker at the very beginning of the tape, does it send a midi “start”?

This is confusing to me as I have the OP-XY starting and stopping play on the OP-1f right now using the USB C ports.

Have you tried a different cable?

I did this a while ago… and I know the notes are a bit around the place… but this is what I’m assuming you want to do and I do explain different parts of the setup to get this to work…

Hi could need some help here too…

No matter in which constellation I set the “other” midi setting in both machines I can’t get them to start together. Not when starting from the op1f, nor from opxy. Resetting the tape to the beginning didn’t helped either.

I tried over midi ble and with the original usb cable. I’m on the very latest FW on both machines.

The op1f receives start and stop, as seen on the new midi monitor, but nothing happens…

Any help is much appreciated…

what mode is your tape in?
ie free , beat match etc

i think in certain modes it does or doesn’t respond to and/or send midi transport / clock

Not working for me in any configuration either but… I’m just arming rec on the op1 and hitting play on both devices at the same time, works fine. You could roll back to an older version and it should work but I imagine it will be fixed soon

Ok, got it to work, somehow…

Changing the tape mode to midi was the key for me.

I then discovered the transport commands are not related to the “other” midi settings, but to the clock.

In some combinations I can start stop both machines from whichever.

But sending midi clock itself from xy to op1f (over midi ble) wasn’t possible for me, only the other way around.

Intrestingly I could switch the tape mode back to beat match, but the transport will still work, which wasn’t the case before switching the tape to midi mode…

Can anyone enlighten me about the difference of the system midi settings vs the ones from the connected devices settings?

Thanks for all the help so far.
