The gearlust thread part deux: post your GAS

Just spent a heap of time at noystoise thanks for that tip!

Can I ask if GAS stands for Gear Addiction Syndrome or something?

Aquisition @Lushr

I’d agree that the Tuna Knobs are pricey, but I don’t mind spending money if it means supporting little start-ups that have tremendous potential. The knobs probably won’t be perfect, but judging from their ideations and specs it seems they’ve designed it to be as stable (wobble free) as possible. The suction cup/base is thick and wide enough and the knob spins on a separate axis so your not turning the entire product. In the future, what if they made faders and pads that were all cohesive on a protective silicone/suction screen, that you can peel off from the corners in one piece? Haha. Multi-page apps are definitely one of the big issues, but the concept would be fun to explore further, IMO.

Mind = Blown

Those kids are gonna get rich!

Lemur + full screen of these whatamajigs… omg iPadgasm

I spent over $300 on my Patchblocks @Kites, I don’t mind spending money on startups  FWIW, I’ve funded 7 projects on Kickstarter and two on Indiegogo, I think these websites are amazing for stuff like this, and I don’t hope they fail or anything. if their product is being built somewhere in Europe then the price is probably about where it needs to be imo.

an iPad can support up to 11 individual touch events, the iTouch (and I assume iPhone) 5.

oddly enough, faders would have probably pushed them into “buy” territory since I’d love to turn my iPad into a mixer/control surface w/ a more tactile feedback.

There was a video floating on the web, where a dude made a prototype of a fader out of wood. I wonder if he developed it further.

I’m really curious how well the Tuna Knobs would work and very tempted to back em. My only setback would be that I would get the knobs close to December.

Did you get any cool music related products? Was it you who backed the Mogees project?

Here it is:

Looks silly, but it has potential?

Whaaaat? Surely using the end of your finger is quicker than picking up the fader knob! Funny.

I just built a Mutable Instruments Anusrhi. Wow, what a fun synth! Trouble is I got the Eurorack panel, and now I’m GASing for Eurorack cases & modules. Yikes!! $$!

Krism I also have backed many kickstarters. I really love funding startups! and then a year in the future some strange package arrives at my door with a cutting edge device! side note. today is my birthday. someone convince me to buy an octatrack. Im worried that my ipad can easily have similar functionality. But I really want an octatrack to finish my HARDWARE DAW! THe octatrack really seems like it would compliment my strange pension for making mangled strange sounds and then allow me to sequence it all together… just looking for some advice as the octatrack is very expensive…

I have indeed backed the Mogees project @Kites. I've also backed Patchblocks (which are now available for sale from their site, and f'ing awesome little shits). I meant to back the MIDISprout but forgot and never got a reminder from Kickstarter =/ I've backed a guitarist to help her get her EP done, and on indiegogo I helped two people from ambientonline.org get to the Ambient Music Conference in Helsinki late last month.

The Octatrack is very fast at mangling sound material @masterofstuff124. Samplr on the iPad is pretty cool, and you can certainly get a lot of use out of the iPad via synth apps. Here's what your iPad will need to compare to the OT:

1)Genome (or some other sequencer)
2)FX apps like AUFX:Dub and AUFX:Space, Turnado, Effectrix, etc
3Samplr or another sampling app (has its own FX, of course)
4)AudioBus to tie it all together
5)An interface with input and output

You also have to mess around with AudioBus and/or Inter App Audio, background MIDI, etc. The iPad can do a lot of it, and more even, but it is not nearly as nicely integrated. Also, a used OT will sell for about what you paid for it, and the resale on a new one isn't too tragic of a loss.

Be wary on the Octatrack's CF reader pins. If you bend them inserting the card, Elektron will tell you that's a sad story and charge you for a new logic board. I put a large card in mine and left it alone lol.

I want to say @Tarekith may have gone Octatrack -> iPad so he could probably explain the workflow better than I can.

A question about GAS… Is it a problem of wanting things? Because I always thought of it as a problem of buying things and always being broke!

I think it’s both hehe…

acquisition is the key term, it is about buying, or constantly thinking about buying or what to buy next or whether one should wait for the next thing or buy this thing, and what’s that thing I could buy that would make my system perfect and free me from GAS. Do I want to be free of GAS . . . I could go on.

Pretty much what KrisM said, regarding the Octatrack. Once you get used to the UI, you can mangle audio in realtime like no other hardware device. Just don’t expect it to be like an MPC or other hardware sampler designed for more traditional applications. There’s an upcoming app for iPad called FLUX:FX (http://flux.noii.se/) which might let me do on an iPad what I currently do on Octatrack to sample and mangle audio from my viola and guitar, but I would view it as a complementary rather than competing option. After a humiliating live show a few years back in which my laptop crashed in the middle of a set, I am loathe to base my entire rig around one particular device - redundancy is a good thing here!

^made by adrian belew/ I love king crimson! thanks for the words everyone.! but i kinda feel like adrian is a bit of a whore sometimes. what with the digital app for the istomp still costing 20 bucks and its just a shitty pitch shifter… anyhoo ima dinosaur and im diggin that app. maybe i will get another Ipad and an a new IConnect!!! i hate gas…

@krisM did you receive a Mogees yet, or is still being produced?? I really wanted one, but couldn’t pull the trigger during the campaign. I emailed the inventor afterwards to see if I could get on a waiting list, but it have not heard from him :frowning:

@masterofstuff Yeah, the new Flux:FX better be good, considering what is out there for iPad already in the guitar amp and effects departments (Effectrix, ToneStack, Turnado, Loopy HD, etc).

@Kites I am also a backer of the Mogees project. I received a newsletter on 7/9 that stated thus:

The factory have promised to give us the delivery date for the iOS version in two week’s time from now - you’ll be the first to know when we have it;

We’ll be in touch over the next weeks with more updates on Mogees - and for all those who didn’t get one during our Kickstarter, we’re very grateful for all your interest and enquiries - we’re now working hard to deliver the units to our first beta-testers, improve the product and release Mogees commercially in the near future. Follow us on the social networks and stay tuned, we’re working for you

Have a great summer

Kind regards

Bruno and the Mogees team.

Thanks govna’ that means soon for you and maybe next year for me… Please post videos when you guys get them.

"Live recording from the board? Leave the laptop. This audio interface records 16 line inputs directly to WAV files on your USB hard drive – no DAW required."

cymatic makes a player in that chassis, too, with MIDI control. Could be useful for people looking to trigger audio tracks for a live performance.
