The Modular Thread

this is modular. :slight_smile:

I’ve seen that pic @JohnnyEgo and love it. Real curious what all you’ve got going on there.

@JohnnyEgo how do you sync the OP-1 with the BeatStep Pro? Which one of them is master? Or do you have some other funky DIY thing emitting clocks?

What’s your thought on the BSPro? The demo video’s look cool, but then they always do…

Sorry for my salvo of questions :wink:

thx @krism! Really Cool

The BEatstep Pro is a monster with the OP-1 it is in Fact the 16x16 Endless Sequencer and far far away…
its a mix between a good Elektron Sequencer,things from the Op-1,classic MPC, and old CV/Gate connecs.
Really Happy cause’ from now on its possible to sequence my DIY Synth endlessly.

aswell Oplab is one of the best things ever build because i can control every PatchPoint of my Synthy via those 12 Digital Outs and that is creepy as Fuck because 2 Month ago i had no Idea how to assemble anything like a Synthesizer! This thing gets Big and Cheap! You will here from it…MAY 2016.
MilkGlass Illuminated from downside via Big Leds so can see every Lfo/Delay/GAte setting on its own. Pure Sound and Visual. nothing else.

Yeah

@polyoptics You’re case is simply awesome ! I love it, have you got pics of the inside ?

The modular attracts me more and more … With a starting budget of approximately 500€ (I know that I’m dreaming lol), do you think it is possible to begin a rack with VCO, LFO, VCF, VCA and Envelope? I would like to make some ambient/space and deep smooth lead sounds

So, did anyone try the FH-1 with OP-1 yet?

http://www.ctrl-mod.com/Expert-Sleepers-FH-1-p/expert-sleepers-fh-1-.htm

I'm curious about this too --- anyone clocking their op1/moduar via the usb cable directly, without an in between box?

@quarantequatre Thanks!! :slight_smile:

The inside is some blue fabric that was originally in the case. However, there are some scorch marks on the inside of the lid now because I set it on fire twice while I was cutting the metal parts of the suitcase. Turns out it gets really, really hot, and there were a lot of sparks. Especially when cutting certain rivets on the inside, must be the material they’re made of. :slight_smile:

It was my first time doing anything like that. I had a good time (and didn’t get hurt!) … so I’ll call it a success!

Start used, and doepfer if possible since they’re pretty inexpensive new. A MicroBrute will also give you all of those with some bit of patching. If you’re handy with a soldering iron, there are DIY modules that can make it more inexpensive as well. Heck, for $560 USD (right around 497 EUR before shipping) you can get a full 3U/19" Rack of Frac via Paia.

But otherwise, shop used to get the most for the money if you can’t solder.

edit forgot about things like the Synthesizer Box from Pittsburgh Modular:

Low pass gate instead of a filter, but there are other modules that combine an entire ā€œvoiceā€ that are fully patchable and in the same general price range.

Or for a little more scratch get a Roland System 1m, they’re about $600 USD new, don’t know on used. But you have more options in that price range than just a few years ago.

@quarantequatre

he buddy…i will build you a nice 6 Voice Space Drone Bass/Lead Synth for 349,-.
Without a case but highly moddable and really cool sounding, it will deliver 6 Voices each limitless pitchable and with some nice lfos etc. voice goes by default build straight into a patchable Delay Unit. Fully Modabble.
you can use up to 12 Patchpoints via Oplabs Digital outs. So if you want you can assign 6 wires to 6 Voices–pitch them individually and create 6 Basslines or 3/3 Lead/Bass/Whatever. Another 6 wires to everything that is possibly a patchpoint like Lfo’s Sound Shape control etc.
Comes with Audio Input–so you can Run external Stuff through the Synth.

Based on Atmega 328P.

@KrisM
Thank you for your advices :slight_smile:
The system 1 is analog ? Not virtual analog ? Paia seems nice but I prefer to begin something new with good modules (if possible) :slight_smile:
I don’t really like the ā€œformatā€ of the microbrute, I prefer the sh101 or ms-20 for example.

@JohnnyEgo
Thank you too, I’m a total beginner, your system seems very interesting for the price, what modules do you propose ? I don’t have the op-lab, is it necessary ?
Have you got pics and demo sounds of this synth ?

Nb: Don’t forget that I’m totally new to the modular universe. I’ve only tested some synthesis via my Ultranova VA (which is a very good VA synth for the price !), the ms-20 VST (I love this synthesizer), Volcas, and some other VST.

System 1m is virtual analog, part of Roland’s AIRA line.

Saw this on muffwiggler - http://www.ikeahackers.net/2015/09/diy-modular-synth-case.html

Apparently he had grounding issues though.

Update. Midi Controlable. Design Changes may differ cause’ Handbuild.

Really nice cover on modular of Where Is My Mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOMq9wgmp0

(I found it a lot more pleasant and melodic than most - YMMV)

Hello!

With the help of the good folks from this forum I managed to setup a "lofi" (semi/quasi) modular system with a Microbrute + Dark Energy I, controlled by my OP-1/Oplab and with the OTO Biscuit + Strymon Timeline as the output effects. Although very simple and somewhat limited, I“m very happy with that system and feel that I“m just scratching the surface possibilites of the interation between the MB + DE and the sequencing with the OP-1 (will try the Octatrack and the TR-626 today! :).

However, I“m thinking about expanding it with modular/syncable stuff and, if possible, want to hear your opinions. I know that this is a more Muff Wiggler question but I really luv this forum and think that we all here share a somewhat similar aesthetic approach to gear and music making, so I“m open to your ideas. I have a budget of aprox. 800-1000 euros, don“t have much space and I“m not obsessed with analog circuits.

The Oplab works but the analog outputs can be a little wonky when working with a modular. Some lower pitches it just can’t. Quit. Reeeeeach hehe. But for syncing I’m a fan generally, though my Pyramid is taking over some of those duties and the Oplab is going to keep USB hardware like the OP-1 in line.

If you can solder your money will go a lot further in the Eurorack or Frac Rack world. Not super knowledgeable on EU DIY kits but I remember we have some people that post in here. Which is of course moot if you don’t want to build hehe.

It sounds to me like you want clockable LFOs, EGs, maybe a trigger sequencer to trig mod sources, etc?

I am a fan of Maths. Maths is all things modulation. Maths is love. Maths is life.

I also really like Tides for really slow evolving modulations.

Buy used whenever possible, though don’t expect the usual used gear discounts, modular stuff loses little value.

Thanks a lot, @KrisM. Well, I“m not using the CV“s from the Oplab as both the Microbrute and the Dark Energy have MIDI/CV (indeed, I“m controlling directly the MB), but is bad news that the Oplab can“t handle lower pitches (why?). I was thinking about Pyramid or the Beatstep Pro. What do you think about them?

What I“m doing right now with the system: https://www.instagram.com/p/BBnyDhvmtNA/?taken-by=rgarrell really simple, noisy stuff as I learn how to use it. What I want to do next: control both the DE and the Microbrute with different MIDI sources, like a 2-track synth (maybe with the Octatrack and MIDI tru? Or with the Octatrack and the OP-1? Or the TR-626? With the Oplab I can sync two MIDI sources, right?).

I“m really happy with your suggestions because Make Noise and Mutable Instruments are exactly the vibe I“m digging (after all, it“s the OP-1 forum; as I told before, I“m quite sure that we all share a common, yet diffuse, offbeat/experimental/fun ethos into music making and gear). But I need to be honest: I never understood what Maths do! What do you think I can do it the module with my setup? I would like more sequencing/randomizing/pattern options (but maybe I“ll change my mind after sequencing with the Octatrack - maybe it“s enough!!).

And thanks a lot about the used gear suggestion. What do you recommend to buy, Buy/Sell Muff Wiggler section?

I’ve bought all my used modules off muffwiggler. You need 100+ posts but that might be to sell, I can’t can’t recall about buy tbh.

About the Oplab, it gets within a few cents but can’t quite get the voltage there. It’s talked about in the latest Oplab OS thread by TE themselves.

I actually haven’t used my Pyramid with the modular yet. Been super busy lately. There are probably better sequencers for modulars, in the rack or otherwise (Entropy Engine has 8CV outs iirc but one person’s better is another’s awful lol), but Squarp has hinted more CV functionality with the inputs. Pyramid strangely imo has more CV inputs than outputs so I’m hoping they can make them able to be switched to outputs or something. For me the Pyramid was about being able to control my hardware and software from one device that isn’t reliant on what DAW I use. It has DIN MIDI, configurable DIN SYNC, CV/Gate out, and USB MIDI and is class-compliant.

Maths is an analog computer. Basically it generates functions that let you modulate a parameter. Think of it as an advanced LFO or envelope generator that can be looped or triggered, can process other CV signals, and give you adding, subtracting, and OR logic functions. It’s hugely deep but there are alternatives I’ve seen people talk off but can’t remember. Having Wogglebug or Zillion (via converter) trigger Maths can be wild.

Oplab can sync MIDI over both USB and the DIN, and the Mini USB used to connect to a computer iirc.

You and your classy white Minibrute with its stackable cables grumble that’s a banning…

Lol kidding. I paid $230 for my OG new.

OT is a great MIDI sequencer and I used it for years. That said it doesn’t do much sequencing of others after the Pyramid arrived unless I need to plug something in that doesn’t have an out or thru. It’s still fantastic for sound design and I have little need to sequence it outside its own sequencer. I am a bit butthurt Elektron is already shafting it of features the analogs get for their sequencers that it doesn’t when it is their flagship MIDI sequencer, but I digress >.> it’s five years old now.
