The Modular Thread

Figured I’d show this bad boy off, haven’t attempted to integrate the OP-1 with it yet, but someday I’ll think of a reason. Maybe just duck tape it to that empty black area above and see what happens.

@virtual_flannel -- don't forget the 1500+ for the rest of the modules! :P

Lol! Ya, no doubt!

Hey maybe someone could give me some advice. To put it simply, if I had the Monome+Modules Kit is there any module that would allow me send that data to control my midi set up. Thanks fellas! The kinda cheapest and most direct route would be appreciated. Oh and of course the damn case!

Do you have Oplab? You could use it for CVin and MIDIout…

I do have Oplab. But, ok, haven’t looked into the Monomodules enough, but. Wouldn’t I need to convert essentialy one CV and one Gate signal per midi channel. I was looking at Mutable Yarns which appears to have 4 CV/Gate points converted to midi (guessing on 4 midi channels). Would like something like this but with 16 channels, but also don’t know how many I would want/need for the monome stuff.

@virtual_flannel What exactly are you trying to control?

Asking because I feel like I had the same idea when I started into the modular world – “whats the simplest way to make this work with my existing setup” – which I did get working with the elektron AR + triggerRiot . In the end it sort of became clear that although bending the modular/monome to my existing workflow worked, it was convoluted / messy and gave me that feeling of working against the grain.

In hindsight, I should have started with a very basic modular system + monome, and then adjusted my workflow to accommodate this cool new gear and workflow. All the time and $$ I spent bending the modular system to control my midi setup pretty much went down the drain. It was cool but it was not half as much fun or productive as I thought it would be.

Just my 2 cents though!

My LFOs aren’t loaded yet. I still can’t find my 16 pin to Tiles adapter that just walked off either so I can’t quite finish my planned build -_-

Other pic is a close up of how I mounted the main power board. The secondary board I bought doesn’t need that, it’s mounted to a plastic card via standoffs already it turns out

Bought a little 1U “cover”/grill since I spontaneously decided on two 1U rows, it was like $4 at a local family-owned electronics wonderland by the makerspace

The Disting in the top row is the OG. Bottom is a mkII (double the delay time). Probably need to swap my 3U rows (the racks not the modules) since I have many more 2.5mm screws now vs 3mm that the tip top rails use. I like threaded strips vs sliding nuts, but my understanding is that some modules don’t have perfect spacing and so I’m better off with sliding nut style anyway and it’s not like they’re hard to use. Just align the nuts with a screwdriver or something, that’s all I did

Here is the 5th entry in my “studio notebook” series recording my experiments with teletype.

This is an abridged performance of two iconic minimalist compositions by Steve Reich (“Piano Phase” and “Clapping Music”). Each composition consists of two “layers” of shifting patterns. I decided to use these patterns as an exercise in constructing a scene in teletype, where each pattern evolves in it’s own right, while staying in a fixed relationship to the remaining patterns.

In the beginning of the video you will see all the screens from teletype explaining how the scene was constructed. In the TRACKER view you can see the first two patterns on the left are the 12 note sequences of the “Piano Phase”. Even though they are identical, I set up two patterns independently, as they are being read at slightly different speeds. The leftmost pattern is being clocked by external triggers, while the rightmost one is being clocked by internal teletype metronome M, the tempo of which is calculated in script 1. The “Piano Phase” theme are rendered by the two oscillators of the Make Noise DPO. The two patterns on the right are simple 1s and 0s defining the sequences of claps based on Reich’s composition. These are triggering pulses that control white noise bursts, and MI Elements.

Here is some additional info on “Piano Phase” and “Clapping Music”:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Phase
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapping_Music

I highly recommend this as an exercise in getting to know the teletype environment better. It requires taking advantage of a variety of aspects of the module, and I find that having a specific outcome in mind makes the learning process more meaningful/effective. Plus, it’s just cool to punch in the E4 F♯4 B4 C♯5 D5 F♯4 E4 C♯5 B4 F♯4 D5 C♯5 sequence and have your instrument instantly sound like the legend of minimalist music!

Thanks, @piotr !

very interesting stuff – really like the interaction of the beat and melody. nice of you to include links to further reading for people like me, who don’t know

Alright, case and first modules are arriving this week. So stoked.

What case did you end up going with @wildfrontiers?

What case did you end up going with @wildfrontiers?

Going the Rast route like you suggested! Populating it with Tiptop Z Rails and Ears. All in all I kept the cost to about $150 with rail strips and a power supply. Still much to do with actually putting it together and paint/stain the Rast.

Don’t forget the 6U rack rails! Or 8U if you want to remove the bottom (it’s very solid with gear in it) to have some 1U Tile rows for utility stuff (save 3U for “the fun stuff” IMO). Should be cheap at any music store. Unless that’s what you meant by “rail strips”

@Polyoptics - that case is BEAUTIFUL!

@KrisM yeah that’s what I meant by rail strips, the 6u rack rails. That’s a good point about the bottom, but I’ll probably stick with 6u since I already bought the rack rails. Definitely excited to get going.

So, did anyone try the FH-1 with OP-1 yet?

My Modular Cat. Both have been in there but Chloe thinks it’s her little den…

Will have to cover those once I restore power to the case >.>

Really getting into Roland’s new modules, too. But gd are they huge…

cute, but isn’t this dangerous?

My modules/case stuff have been starting to arrive. Unfortunately all I have module wise in my hands is an LFO (TTLFO by Ginko Synthese) and a mixer (by Pittsburgh), so no playing. Have a MN STO and Maths coming this week as well as a VCA and LPG that will hopefully be here by the weekend. I have had Clouds pre-ordered, but alas the shipping date keeps getting pushed back. Still on the fence with some filters, but I will have a playable set-up at least by the end of the week. Party! There's still so much I can't even wrap my head around in modular, but the more reading and watching I do, the more I learn. It's been a fruitful few months.

I did say that once power is restored I will have to block access to the holes @piotr  No power in there atm.

First modules and case have arrived, but of course my patch cables haven’t. I just had some banana cables arrive for my Ciat stuff, but no mono 3.5mm. I do have a local store about an hour away that carries patch cables. I’m debating taking the trip just so I can make noise this weekend, but I should just be patient. I understand that is a must in the modular world.

New family member!

Got a nice vinyl crackle going on my modular  MicroBrute pitch out to Rubicon, Quantum Rainbow’s grey noise to Rubicon’s hard sync, Rubicon Sine out to Microbrute, set to hpf and adjust cutoff, play in lower registers, and it sounds perfect.

I love vinyl crackle, always wanted an fx box that did it or used Live, but now I can synthesize it after a happy accident (I know I could just sample it or use someone else’s samples…). Grinning so much right now…

One of my Synthrotek LFOs is a little wonky, but it took a big hit recently when I knocked a 20" fan over and it hit it, damaging the power header shroud (it was just sitting out, not installed). Its LEDs don’t alternate like the other one >.> Well, it LFOs anyway, I must have soldered something wrong, but it does work <.<
