The Modular Thread

Ordered the System 1m yesterday.

YIPPEE!!!

How is it so far? I was thinking of picking one up, but I’m still on the fence

It’s the dogs bollocks man! This thing can blast. The filter sweeps are incredible. It’s features are many and it’s faults are few. Maybe I am easily pleased but for me, I have created very interesting sounds with it. Modular wise, it’s a semi on its own. I have purchased it with the expectation of picking up the other modules that have been released now I believe - the AIRA EFX Series. Get those and then you’ll be laughing all the way to creative heaven and back!

Sonic State has got some reviews on YouTube;

Follow up that viewing with this…

I also like the button on the System 1m that generates sound. Great for toying around without the need to connect a midi player. That button and sweep really has the finest sound of all my gear. (Sorry Op-1, I still love you! Haha)

Here is me having fun on my modular!
Mainly using the Monome setup, but of course the op1 is playing background and voice samples:

Teletype is used to clock Earthsea:

These are three variations of one scene written in teletype. It’s a more abstract, somewhat generative texture engine, with a single tone pattern. All the tempos and structures are derived from the internal teletype metronome (M).

3a:
Teletype controls Make Noise Mysteron, Erbe-verb, and TE PO-12
3b:
Is only two modules: teletype patched directly into Mutable Instruments Elements. Included is a closeup of the teletype screen scrolling through all the scripts.
3c:
Same scene as the previous two clips, except an external clock (gate from white whale) toggles the internal teletype clock on/off on every pulse, and scrambles some variable values resulting in evolving structures. Modules involved are: monome teletype, white whale, Make Noise Sto, Mutable Instruments Elements, and ZDSP running Halls Of Valhalla.

A slightly more expansive arrangement with monome teletype at the center. Teletype is driven by meadowphysics triggers, further breaking up patterns, and controlling pitch variations derived form a single, internal sequence. Additional PO-12 drums are driven by teletype, and processed through CV-controlled Audio Damage Grainshift.

Nice stuff once again @piotr

I’ve decided I’m finally going modular. Can’t hold it back any longer. Starting with Clouds and a few other utility modules and will expand from there…I think I have a solid idea on what I want. Still deciding on a case. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your kind comment!

As to the case: my suggestion is to get a bigger case than what you initially think you might need. If I were to start now, knowing what I know after few years, I would have gotten a minimum 6U x 104Hp case. But ideally a 12U. My first case was a Doepfer 6U 86HP case, which I ended up selling very quickly. Same with a 3U monorocket skiff… until I got the monorocket MX104 12U case, which is still part of my rig.
Of course, only you know what your needs/plans are. But my experience was such that I wish that I started with a bigger case, and avoided losing money on resale.
Good luck with your adventure!

I have a Monorocket M6C (6U 90 HP) and definitely agree with Piotr, a 6U 104 is a great size. I’m regularly thinking of just that slight upgrade and the bit more flexibility a case like that could give me. I definitely would steer away from 3Us completely but of course, it depends on your plans.

You can get 94hp x 6U out of an IKEA RAST + Erthenvar rails/brackets, then add a power supply of choice @wildfrontiers iirc about $330 with a Synthrotek prebuilt supply and distribution board and some hardware to mount it. But the savings really come with the next RAST; $160 to add another 6U/94hp (RAST, rails/brackets, and a distro board for the existing power supply). And call it $55 per 1U Tile row if you want to use those for basic utility functions.

Helps to have a drill, of course

My RAST is only 84hp because I already had it built as a 6U 19" rack, and a $20 used set of z-ears/rails had me on my way

Thanks for the advice @piotr, @sellanraa and @Krism!

I’m thinking 6U and somewhere between 90HP and 104HP is the way to go, though maybe a bit more HP. I’m planning out what I want to achieve at least by the end of the year on ModularGrid. When I do reach the end of the year goal, I still want to have extra space, since you never know what will come out or something might change.

The IKEA route is tempting. I do have a drill  Is there a place with detailed instructions, specifically setting up the power supply and distribution board?

I know someone out there has made a tutorial using the RAST, forget their power supply, but I just winged it. I just bought a bunch of quarter inch nylon standoffs, washers, and screws (36 iirc to mount the power board and distribution block, 4+32) and went to work

However, I remembered this company:

Very competitive to modding a RAST and in some cases even cheaper. I’ll probably upgrade into a 104hp job some day. Still have to mount your power supply, but it’s easier with a back board vs roof/bottom like my RAST. I need to make custom length power ribbons in some cases >.>

Hopefully this weekend I will be adding the second row to the RAST and the 1U Tile row, I’ll try to remember to take pictures of it. Adding a secondary power board to power the lower level and my Tiles to minimize the power cables I have to make.

If mobility is not important, then the Ginko is a really nice option. Cheap, but you can get a good amount of space to grow into.

Just finished building my first eurorack case – its hard to tell but there is a 1u row on the bottom too. I’m pretty happy with it!

Wow, the Ginko cases look fantastic. Portability isn’t a must for me, so I’m currently smitten with this option…not to mention the price seems absolutely affordable as well. Would put me under what I budgeted for a case, even adding in power and such. Either way, I’m going to decide on a case by Monday and I will report back here. Definitely excited to jump into this world. I have a very strong idea of what I want to do and modular will make it possible.

@KrisM, definitely post a picture of your setup. Would love to see it…videos would be even better haha.

@Polyoptics - Wow. That is beautiful. Love that color of blue, especially contrasted against the green grass. I saw a similar suitcase case for sale on Elektronauts that was pink and have considered that for my case as well. Do you have any links to music or videos from your stuff?

First LFO module done. Synthrotek made it very easy, all the components are taped up in the order they appear in the visual bill of materials, you can practically build it from the BoM without the online instructions.

I went raw on my RAST last night lol. Removed the bottom plate and drilled holes to mount it as a back plate (not my best work… >.> ), but now I have 3U+1U x2 out of that thing.

Back to work!

Man, just noticed that a monome and all their euro rack modules goes for a modest 1500 these days, affordable considering old monome prices. Modular gas is back on :frowning:

@wildfrontiers

Thank you, I’m really happy with it! I 'd definitely recommend building your own case. Its a really fun project and it gives you a ‘special’ connection with your modular system. …plus the total cost was around 200USD so its a hellova lot cheaper than some! haha

I have a video on the previous page of this thread if you want to see it in action.

@krism sounds like a lot of fun!

Yeah, if portability/durability isn’t an issue, you can go with a lot of more affordable options. Speaking of, I’m playing some shows with voice, OP1, Octatrack, and modular in late July/early August: Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison (hopefully), Minneapolis, and Iowa City. If you know peeps there, send them my way! shedding.org

@virtual_flannel – don’t forget the 1500+ for the rest of the modules! :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol! Ya, no doubt!

Hey maybe someone could give me some advice. To put it simply, if I had the Monome+Modules Kit is there any module that would allow me send that data to control my midi set up. Thanks fellas! The kinda cheapest and most direct route would be appreciated. Oh and of course the damn case!

Do you have Oplab? You could use it for CVin and MIDIout…
