The Modular Thread

Ah here’s the modular thread! Bump bump bump, let’s get this up again.

I may get pilloried for mentioning it here, but I just got the Littlebits/Korg synth kit. For those interested in modular, but lacking a deep wallet, it seems like this is an equally time sucking music/noise enterprise at a fraction of the cost. In my first experiments, I was getting really cool “modular” type sounds, and felt I had only scratched the surface. Am getting a bunch more bits (many outside of the synthkit proper), and probably a second synthkit. Of course there are limits with this setup, 2 stage envelope, limited waves from the oscillators, only 1 type of filter, but it still has so much potential. Highly recommended if you want to get your feet wet with a limited budget.

Synthesis Technology are releasing the E620 MIDI USB Host Device.
It had 2 cv/gate outs with different modes. I’ve suggested to them to do cv/gate on outputs 1&2 and then clock and start/stop on outputs 3&4.
Then we could use the op-1 to sequence our modulars and sync the modular to the op-1

The Expert Sleepers FH-1 is looking good for that too!

Good to see this thread back

just posted some images in the “pictures” thread, but here are my best friends, in a new project this week:

@piotr what do use to interface with your modules? I use the OG icm, but earlier this month I got MI’s CVPal kit but didn’t realize it wasn’t a host. Bummer

@Tribrix I think the Little Bits pre-modular move is a great idea for getting your toes wet into modulars. I should’ve made that move myself, but I’m into deep. Good suggestion.

For Op-1 it's Oplab. PO-12 I just send triggers from whatever, but attenuate so that they are no more than 6V

@piotr I should’ve got the oplab starting out, but I’ve got little desk space and hoping to consolidate everything as much as I can. Maybe I’ll eventually go with something from Addac.

Makes sense.
If you have CVPal, then something like iConnectMIDI would work, because you could connect the Op-1 and CVPal to it at the same time. Just an idea, though that would take some desk space as well.

I didn’t see a thread here about em:

Any thoughts? – I am really on fire for these… however as amazing as they look I think i’ll (sadly) avoid them.

Mostly because I don’t need any modules right now, but on a side note – I have some of the little Bastl boxes which are great, but I don’t like the workflow. Nothing labeled, and tons of multibutton combo presses to switch modes and all the button features change. It’s awesome bang for the buck though, just not my style. Reminiscent of the Octatrack for me, too much this then this then double press this then that now back over there and… MUSIC!

They look and sound really really AWESOME though…

@Polyoptics eventually I think I’d like an entire case for the Bastl modules, my system can use some more digital love.

I used to own the XOR, and Drums boxes, but they were too lo-fi for my taste, and you’re right, the interface just got too tiresome and annoying for me to hang onto. In the modular videos - I’ve only focused on the sound aspect and not their ui, but it doesn’t seem as bad as the little boxes to me. I’ll have to give them another view though.

@kites Definitely give your impressions here if you end up grabbing any of their modules, I’d love to hear about them.

Here is one that I am getting for sure:

The modular scene is so dangerous for the wallet… $$$$ … but I’ve never had more fun. Its like playing around putting computers together when I was a kid but with music instead. Teletype really merges some of my fav things about computers and music… this is a mega hit imo!

Yes! I am looking forward to Teletype as well!!!

^ha what an intersting module!

Ordered the System 1m yesterday.

YIPPEE!!!

I saw that system 1m, 84hp for $600 is madness.

The Sheep firmware for Tides has me interested, I might have to swap mine out to see what it’s like.

How is it so far? I was thinking of picking one up, but I’m still on the fence

I posted this in the PO videos thread, but it probably belongs here.

My first crack at exploring teletype…

You could try these instead! Still quite expensive but they sound lush.
