Voting Battle 29 "one note song"

and voted @marijn a while back - something about your track and the sounds in it that appealed to me more than the others…was a tough choice though. nice work all around gents!

Ha @mixrasta and @madeupmonster… to bad you missed the official deadline because they would have been nice additions. Next time!

I would like to give a quick shoot out to @overseas: the atmosphere is really good! like I stated before, it really gets a misty woods kinda vibe…

@Ikari: right in my chiptune heart, this kinda sounds always reminds me opening a keygen generator for downloaded software (of course I don’t use the keygen, that would be illegal :wink:

My vote goes to @Marijn: I really enjoyed hearing the poppin of the cork transforming into a weird happy dark vibe… just like getting drunk with some 16th century characters. Also the origin of the sample was really nice, and a good title to go with it.

thanks @Kites ...anything in particular you had a question about? more than happy to discuss, if it's something I can distinctly recall doing.

There are a few things, but how did you produce your beats? Did you sequence them or lay them down live to tape? Any efx? It’s been a while since I’ve done any glitch beats.

@Kites

i started with the analog kick i created and then sampled from my DSI Tempest, directly to the Tape from the Main output of the Tempest. tried to get it nice an punchy & also so it had a decent tail-off too.

i remembered seeing the @cuckoo youtube video showing how to create a drum kit on the op-1. i also have seen other similar methods utilizing the Envelope, as what he was showing using the synth engines, on other analog drum machines and synths, like the volca sample, for example. (i haven't actually watched the entirety of the cuckoo video since it's 20 mins+, but got the gist after a couple mins and started tweaking my own FX, etc…awesome videos though!!!). i found Grid and then re-samling and using Spring to be nice for creating hats and then open-hats respectively, Nitro & Drive for the Snares & Kicks...even made some disco like "ring my bell" laser sounds which didn't make the cut in the final song. i think i only used about a dozen of the drum sounds i made, plus the original kick in the entry. and also one reversed kick, used sparingly.

i used the envelope shaper, to make a short click up and down throughout the wave form, sometimes with the attack (blue) set all the way left, and others with (blue) shifted slightly right & so the decay (green) was vertical. and just went thru tweaking the sound here and there, going up/down in octave, trying different FX, etc. similar to the methods he describes doing from the synth engines…but all based on my Tempest Kick.

i also stacked some of the sounds by recording the hit on Tape 1, and then a second different hit on Tape 2, and doing a Shift + Lift to drop it back in the Sampler…and then doing even more effects or wave-shaping. i found doing this helped make the sound more dynamic.

along the way, i ended up creating all of the other sounds heard in the mix, by opening up the waveform, like a kind of e. piano one, for example. (obviously though, as this was the battle rules).

then i did other tweaking one the drums were in the Drum sampler, as i sequenced, like shaping the wave more to get the sounds punchy or subtle, using the wave shape mostly (2).

in terms of sequencing, i used the step sequencer to lay down a foundation. i record one segment at a time, changing up the pattern every 4-beat measure. continue for either 8 or 16 measures. then i did live overdubs to get hats and other percussion recorded, plus some 8T, 16, 16T & 32 rolls using Endless. (after some of the harmonies and basslines were coming together). i like doing the hats and other accents manually, since the Endless swing feature is still a "digital" swing, and doing it Live gives it a looser and more human feel IMO. i did have a tiny bit of delay on the snare…here and there.

and of course ( @yoof for opening my eyes to panning methods) i also do a hard left pan on Line 1 and hard right on Line 2, and then try to emulate a real drum mic'ing set up. with the hats at about 66 left. and other accent drums in the right, for example. main kicks and snare always straight down the middle, for example. (however i did a better job of this on my entry for Battle 28 "you're listening").

let me know if you have other questions.

The deadline has come to an end… so I think it’s safe to say that @overseas is the winner… congrats!

Fantastic, well deserved, @overseas_territory! Excited to hear what rules you come up with :slight_smile:

congrats @overseas_territory

looking forward to the next one!

Oh wow thanks everybody! I’m pretty new to these battles so one question: Have all the “regular” battles already been done-like CLUSTER battle, DIGITAL battle and so on. I’m assuming I should come up with something that probably hasn’t been done yet? Thanks

in my opinion, you should make the rules whatever you want, regardless if it has been done before. and make it as restrictive or as wide open as you want too.

I asked on one of the first battles I entered if there was a running list of previous rules somewhere, but only by looking thru some of the songs Lymtronics entered on his Soundcloud page did I find that info. since he put the rules in the details section for his entries.

would be cool to have that compiled info…and to know what the winning tracks were from each one too…

the - ohpeewon battles - Soundcloud page is nice.

We should definitely try to compile that list of battles. I’m pretty sure we could remember all the details between us.

Re battle rules, I totally agree, just go with whatever you like :slight_smile:

We’ve been through quite a few single engine battles with varying rules pertaining to drums. Do whatever you like, though, because the same rules won’t yield the same results twice.

Cool,good info - I’ll get it going soon!

That was a great listen everyone. I love it @overseas territory, @mrijn, and @ikari_warrior. Stellar tracks.

@kln
Wanna say thanks for suggesting Kris Bowers (from our last battle conversation). The upright bass player is great two but i’ve been following Kris, i really like him, thanks. He knows the traditional stuff while keepings fresh, i love that. It has inspired me to go back and actually been practicing music again.

no problem! really glad you like his work, and it has inspired you. i’m a fan as well exactly because his stuff sounds so traditional, yet so modern.

Congrats @Overseas_Territory! Loved your track and style. Enjoyed listening to everybody’s tracks as well. Can’t wait for the next!

Since my OP-1 mangled that “Ahh” sample to bits, it’s only fitting that I do the same by human modulation. Here’s a little freestyle I just recorded alongside the track… a bit sloppy though.
