A very individual and on point talent is FKA Twigs and her band. Performances are always far out and super unique.
A mover in Grime and Garage circles is the one like Flava D. Right now she is doing a lot with the Butterz label.
Back in the day there has always been one or two MC’s/DJ’s in the Garage or Grime world and one of them is Ms. Dynamite - an MC who had a massive hit with a tune called “Boo!” If you don’t know that track you should check it out. Proper bassline stomper that would always get a rewind in a rave.
So yeah FKA Twigs, Flava D, and Ms. Dynamite folks… check 'em!
Here's DJ Rap. She's been around forever (active since about 1987), mostly known for jungle/DnB, but has worked in a variety of styles. She DJs, produces, acts, and teaches music production classes. I interviewed her back in 2000 for a music site I ran at the time and she seemed like quite a cool person.Seconded, I remember a tape that I used to rinse like crazy with her and MC Skibadee. There was a Superman (D’n’B edit), I don’t know if that was her edit but it was the doggy’s do-dah’s!!
Thanks for the heads up on the group/band that she is apart of, I never knew but I’m looking forward to rolling some tunes
Just want to mention KayKayONTHEBEATZ.
She makes instrumentals in a variety of styles with a variety of gear. The videos are usually pretty mellow and the music is consistently good.
Finally got round to listening to Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Friend just gave me ‘slightly warped’ vinyl copy. Reminded me of this thread. Rad album.
@EscapeTheClouds DJ Rap is so overlooked, she put up with a lot of sexist crap from the early-mid Jungle scene (http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/interview-dj-rap-out-of-the-jungle-1197842.html). Saw her play out a few times in 1990-1991 starting her set with The Orb was a favourite at the time.
