I guess you would have to be able to export the live recording somehow, otherwise what’s the point? My guess would be an AIFF file that a companion app has access to?
I am asking TE if it is TRRS or if it can transmit wireless audio for recording. I don’t understand the point of the tape feature if you can’t record anything? I guess you could put a microphone in front of the speakers, but that defeats any sense of portability/ease/high quality audio. Does this make sense to anyone else?
I agree, but I can’t find anything about it in press release information. Why wouldn’t they list that if it was possible?
Maybe they need to sell as many accessories as possible to bankroll the future functionality of this device.
I will let ya’ll know how they respond. It seems genuinely cool to me as a tape recorder/radio remixer for making music and I love TE’s experimental style, but if there is literally no way to get audio out other than to sit at my DAW and mic it like an amp, then I am out. $600 speaker just for listening to music doesn’t make any sense to me.
Even if there is some other wireless way to get audio out, why a line in but no line out on something with a tape recording feature?
Bluetooth probably. Why not? Audio over bluetooth is easy.
True, but also why not put a line out? They mention future OP-Z functionality, but there isn’t anything that says “You will be able to send Bluetooth audio to your OP-Z” or “You can record audio to your OP-1 or P.O. 33 by connecting a Bluetooth receiver to their line in.”
It seems like a pretty glaring omission if it is possible. I have a Bluetooth speaker ($40, not $600) that has a line in, but it can’t send that line in audio over Bluetooth to something else, it just receives audio for its speaker.
EDIT: I put in my order to cancel : ( Disappointing birthday climax lol, but I think I will be happier spending those savings on some cheaper gear, donating to some charities, and still not spending $600.
If any of you are still hyped on it they should have at least one more back in stock soon. I hope it turns out to be amazing and I will keep my eye on it, but I can’t wrap my head around no line out or USB audio out for a device this is meant to help record/remix music.
The headline is “The magic radio”, not “The magic recorder”…
Yeah, but it is a $600 magic radio and one of the big magic tricks is “OB–4 continuously memorises everything you listen to on an endless looping tape*. rewind, time-stretch and loop at the flick of your fingertips. on purpose or by accident. instant rewind on radio is just one of the OB-4’s magic tricks.”
A USB-C port or a line out would be a very minimal and very useful addition to actually do anything with the radio recording and tape trick features, why omit it?
For the same reason they omitted the line in port on the OP-Z?
Btw, I imagined this conversation took place at TE a while back:
“We have been working on this damn magic speaker for 6 years already, but it still seems to be missing something… we even added a monk chanting mode, what other crazy functionality could we throw in there?”
“Let’s just release it as is and say it is a lab for exploring new ideas…”
Considering how much they hyped this up as an outdoor device, waterproofing might have been one feature I expected
The random monk chants were the hardest part for me to let go of…my own personal spiritual guide…finally, a radio that can take me to the Pure Land with time-warped synthy nenbutsus (sigh)
They changed the text. Now there is "syncs
with ortho remote for wireless volume control. ". I made a screenshot from the site. Its from the first 20min. I didnt close the site and came back now to see this…
They removed the opz reference?
I was guessing this “disk mode” allows you to get the audio file of the recording loop sent back out via bluetooth to something else you can save it from.
But it does sounds like something that was in development then suddenly “OK, time to ship” and the current feature inclusion wasn’t clear !
Its strange. The desktop site says the ortho remote thing. The mobile has another text on it for me
„Support for audio and midi over ble“
Was going through some of the negative comments on the instagram announment post and noticed Jesper Kouthoofd (TE CEO) liked alot of them;
“After all the hype, this is a little disappointing”
“Literally, of all the things, you drop a radio. It’s 2020. No-one needed a radio.
It looks great, I’m sure it’s cool, I’m sure it has some nice features. But £600, for a radio, is madness”
“When are you releasing the “magic” part? Rewinding the radio to hear the track title isnt something I’ve needed since Shazam… and that’s free…”
“SIX YEARS FOR THIS?? C’MON TE.”
just to name a few. makes me wonder whats going on internally…
it should just have been 249 quit.
and with options to charge all your externals.
with 2 Aux Inputs for the Op-1 and OP-Z.
usb c for the tape recording file or digital audio out.
