Is the Digitakt my next machine?

Haha  waiting to play with new toys is a weird joyful pain  Enjoy the DT

Absolutely! My new Volca FM just arrived, working from home so could in theory be having a sneaky play but on a boring conference call for rest of afternoon arrrrgggghhhhh.

Pretty sure this is the undertone to many of my songs. Never thought of it until now. …wondering how many “new toy, immediately after work” sketches yield phrases that I end up using!

Haha that’s tough!!
I’m working on a report and the results are good even… So I should be happy… but I can’t be bothered, I WANT TO PLAY!

I got my Digitakt about 5 days ago and I love it.

Not too into the sampling but it works… I just can’t do my usual, sample a 1/2/4/8 bar phrase on the fly, but that’s what the Octatrack is for. While it sort of irritates me that I have to trim and save a sample before I can hear what it sounds like in a track, I can rest a lot easier once I have it in there (compared to my OT workflow, where I usually save the sample last and sometimes forget or decide to ditch a sample just because I don’t want to go through the saving/assigning process).

No slices makes sample chains awkward to work with… not into p-locking start points, even with the waveform display (which yeah, needs the zoomed view you get while trimming). I’ll stick with OT for this. I think using samples that can utilize more random start points work better (like a sustained oscillator being swept through various settings), otherwise one shots + sample slot modulation is the way to go, despite using up precious sample slot space.

I run the DT into an Analog Heat and FMR RNLA… sounds awesome. My Rytm won’t be getting much use with this thing around (especially not after I sample a bunch of its sounds into the DT). Thought I’d miss Rytm’s Retrig button, but using that for realtime input usually gets messy and requires editing. Thought I’d miss the Rytm’s velocity sensitive pads, but they require so much force my timing is actually better using the Digitakt buttons.

Despite its many limitations, I really dig the Digitakt. It’s pretty much the perfect companion to the Octatrack for me. I think I’ll be making a lot of music with this setup, and tempo per pattern means I might actually be able to throw a live set together without having to bring a sheet of notes.

Hmm was thinking about getting a DT but now I think the OT is more for me.

Very little mentioned about the forthcoming Analog RYTM MK2....Im guessing this is a powerhouse sampling drum machine but wonder if it has the fun factor of the Digi?

I always felt like the Rytm sample functionality is pretty basic in most areas. Be surprised if they add much further sampling functionality to the rytm in case of damaging sales to OT mkii/DT… But God knows

By not releasing a legit OT2 they’ve kinda backed themselves in to a corner with their feature set hierarchy… New products have to remain missing staple sampling features from their 7 year old flagship sampler in order for it to keep its spot/price

The Rytm Mk2 is going to have a totally revamped OS to go with its new live sampling capabilities, apparently inspired by the DT. It’s obviously too early to know what it’s going to be like, but we can expect a pretty big overhaul I think, let’s not write it off just yet.

I would not write off the Toraiz SP-16. There is a massive OS update planned. Its got the best sound and those Dave Smith filters sound sublime. Here are 2 decent demos -

When people talk about ‘sound’ on the currently available samplers its hard for me to get excited or care about the difference tbh. OT vs DT. DT vs Toraiz. Yeah there are tiny differences but everything I do goes through pedals/tape/plugins/amps and all sounds intentionally non-audiophile/shitty in the end anyway

I’d personally probably rather buy a used OT/DT/Ipad/Mpc Live and a sherman filterbank/Heat than the Toraiz (£1400??!)…

I guess in the same way as some people are precious about great quality audio I’m probably equally precious about the different shades of ruining it tho, so I can totally relate to obsessing over aspects of audio that most other people on the planet would never even notice the difference

The drive on the Toraiz sounds fantastic. I get more inspired with the sound and feel of a sampler than something with a million features but sounds flat. I guess it’s my obsession with sp1200 and vintage Akai. I don’t get people moaning about limited sample time when anything over 16 seconds is just stealing lol and a million features is a headache. I personally think/hope the Toraiz (after the next update) would really nail it as a sampling drum machine off the bat without a load of other kit to tart the samples up

Well my friends, after a few hours I have barely scratched the surface but I think I’ll keep it. @hangar64 the amen break video helped me loads, you have no idea. Thanks for that.

Yeh the Toraiz 32sec limit is no big deal. Can’t remember the last time I sampled anything longer than that!? Guess the people complaining about that were probably looking to run backing tracks?

I’ve never used an sp1200 or mpc60 etc. But have some nice Goldbaby libraries. Great sounding samples! But Tbh to me they sound more like Volca Sample than anything I heard from the Toraiz? Toraiz just sounds super transparent to my ears with minimal added vibe? Obvs the filter/drive will add vibe but there are other filter/drive I probably prefer. Guess it’s just a different tastes thing. As always

I still keep an eye on the Toraiz but Pioneer have a lot to do before it starts to appeal to me at that price.

Ive been watching videos of this thing, I kind of want it now.

Is it easy to program off beat stuff like in most lofi hip hop tracks?

I keep trying to progrram drums like that on the op1 but the swing function in the drum sequencers just don’t do it right.

I would have to just play and record but i find it hard to get that perfect subtle delay.

Would the digitakt make this easier?

like the Eastern Mediterranean Clarinet!

like the Eastern Mediterranean Clarinet!

Thanks mate! Basically went through my old mpc/Ableton project and dumped tons of vinyl sampled stuff in the DT which for some, including this clarinet sample, did not remember about. And quite amazingly, the sample fit the tune and tempo pretty much instantly. The ending of the clarinet riff with the snare.. wtf!

@lefilou great video man! Did you finger-play the drums in? They sound nice and loooooose (just how I like them). How do the new elektron buttons feel for finger-drumming?

Not made for finger drumming. These are buttons rather than pads so more suitable for step sequencing.

Perhaps a missed opportunity if you ask me.

I love the buttons, but then have never been a finger drummer.

Dam you!! Trying so hard to stay away from this thing(not the beer, that's just crazy). Sounds awesome!

Yeah, I’m falling in love with the digitakt, gotta save money for one.
