Nanoloop Mono (Analog Synthesizer Circuit)

See if it works the same way as the manual states for the other cart versions… but yeah, I agree it’d be nice to have a manual for some of the possibly new features that are harder to find.

manual is coming in a few days apparently.

— according to the email i got after ordering the cart.

@pselodux - Now why didn’t I think of that, good idea, and it looks same/similar, I’ll try it tonight, in the meantime here is another instajam I did https://instagram.com/p/BL-ub6DAIGh/

@darenager nice! maaan I hope mine arrives soon. damn australia…

gah. so jealous. mine just landed in ny. i imagine it’ll be here by the weekend

All I can say is it is worth the wait, mine took a while to get here (12 days after shipping notification) and I am in the UK, I checked the tracking status almost daily, heh.

The bass drums are right up my alley - I prefer them to the Rytm bass drums  Simple but smooth like the 808, it can do plenty of other bd types, but I’m a sucker for that type, the Rytm can’t do them without a lot of tweaking to get rid of the pitch bump and hardness.

The noise channel is a lot more versatile than I expected, been using it set to square for bass lines.

I wonder if the cart is updatable using the usb midi dongle, I have noticed a few slight issues, no showstoppers though, and there are a few things I’d like to see added/changed too. Yet to hear from Oliver re my questions, but I guess he is super busy right now!

Yeah Oliver is already working on a new version of the software; apparently there’s some bug preventing it from being used as a sync master?

edit: in fact, oliver has already provided an update:
https://www.nanoloop.com/update/nlmidi.html

and a basic overview (proper manual to come):
http://www.nanoloop.com/mono/manual.html

I keep trying the tracking number, but on my local postal service site it says “item not trackable” … apparently there’s no communication between Deutsche Post and Australia Post… which is weird because it was fine for my other nanoloop orders!

Thx for update, I’ll check it out, just found chords/arps tonight, fun! Re the tracking, don’t worry mine said that each time I checked until it was delivered!

the features sound amazing—some things in the manual weren’t mentioned by Oliver or included in the demos. It really is like miniature versions of Elektron gear. I’m pretty excited about being able to change LFO destination between pitch and filter per step on the same channel; with nl2 it’s fixed to pitch for the pulse channels and filter for the S channel.

I’m really happy to see this getting embraced by the chiptune scene. Hopefully it spawns a new breed of people making chip stuff without the typical DMG bright pulse waves everywhere

Yeah like a minimal analog4 (3!) that you can carry in your pocket  Here is a softer instajam I just did https://instagram.com/p/BMAdar-A-4r/

I just ordered a Hyperkin Supa Boy and Supergameboy cart to try it out on, not sure if it will work but the pair only cost me £25 and my eyes have trouble with the dmg screen these days, so hopefully I can get it working

ooh, be sure to post a video if it works, because I wondered if that’d work (well, if it’d work on snes)…

Having said that, you can prosound the super game boy cart so the audio output is installed on the cart itself (I think).

Speaking of which, I may attempt the mod you described above and connect an output directly to the cart slot audio in pin… perhaps even permanently turning my DMG into a nanoloop mono machine

Nice sounds btw! I’m thinking of all kinds of ways to misuse/abuse that resonant filter.

Well damn I just got a message from ebay saying the Supaboy was a fraudulent transaction so pretty annoyed about that, I will try to find another and yep will let you know if it works.

Yes the mod is very simple, probably want to put a cap and resistor between that point and the output jack just to be safe, I am waiting to hear from Oliver but I think it will be fine to do like that. The pin you want is the second pin from the left as you are looking at the gb opened.

Got it synced up nice, so did a quick instajam mashup https://instagram.com/p/BMBy3IeA3Li/

Love it!

Awesome! Did you end up using additional components to get that going? The chipmusic.org guys were just talking about the line noise in the thread about nl mono so I’ll redirect them to this thread.

In the end I just connected it directly, I might experiment with R/C combinations externally at first then once I have found the optimal values add them internally, the reason being to offer protection, to filter the noise a bit, and if needed to AC couple, but if/when Oliver replies to my email I’ll have a better idea.

The output is much hotter than even the prosound mod, the whine is gone, the hum is gone, but there is a fair bit of white noise when nothing is playing, although the R/C idea might reduce this.

Fitting the jack in that location was very tricky, had to cut away some unused section of the PCB, and even then there is less than 1mm clearance using the standard 3.5mm jack that people use for prosound, https://www.kenable.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=7075&gclid=CPXXofHP-c8CFUETGwodndwDfQ I think if dedicating a gameboy to mono then best to use the internal jack, although be aware that you will no longer have a volume control, easy enough to do externally though.

Yeah my DMG has a separate prosound out to the headphone out so I may just reroute that and then use the headphone out with my fiio amp for when I’m writing on the go. Easy!

i wish they would just make a dedicated device…

well that would just take some of the fun out of it. wouldn’t it?
