OP-XY 1.2 update. It's official!

So the rumors were true. Time to get excited! Time to temper expectations?? I really really hope they deliver some paradigm shift updates but let’s see. Let the speculation commence!

Anyone already got “cracking” on it yet, if you know what I mean? :cat_with_wry_smile:

it feels a bit sad for Jonas as I think this update would’ve been huge like idk, maybe 4weeks ago and I personally have been in big hopes for a drum synth that’s a new generation for TE and new spoiled synthesizer engines should come with 1.20, which is cool.

as I love the overall stuff that already serves a big purpose on the OP1 I can see myself supporting Jonas as long as possible because if we wipe the complete TE identity it would be a bit over the top and the XY is pretty dope as is :heart_on_fire:

let me just sequence “Gin” with the XY while feeding the new drum synth into Palme :mechanic:

Very well said

I don’t put a ton of stock in rumours but having an in-store performance outside sweden for the unveiling of “something” new makes me optimistic about at least multiout usb routing being done

Anything else is gravy but i don’t want other fans to overshadow great news about a long awaited feature if theres not much more…hopefully everybody reasonable walks away happy and reassured by the direction xy devs are taking the instrument

As a drummer I’d be ecstatic if the rumoured drumsynth is real and i’m really curious about voice count, param or config options and whether it’s actually brand new. In the past I’ve been hoping they simply add a microtonic variant to one of the flagship machines but I’d be happy with any dedicated engine for electronic percussion

ok I love the drumline synth as a starting point for a full fledged drumsynth engine and don’t want to ruin the day but half the controls (try claps) really do nothing on a pretty long knob travel…this is wayyyy to soft how it does tweak the voices.

not been able to live rec parameter changes so that a pitch sweep or decay length would apply to the running sequence…the moment you hold record it’ll lock that voice only :face_with_peeking_eye: this is incredibly decent for the time between announcement and today :cloud_with_rain:
release the dev keys please, with this update or have “one more thing” in an hour :woman_getting_massage:

I wonder why it’s still unlisted on the website  downloads OP–XY - teenage engineering

maybe someone outside Elektronauts did a test on it and now it’s getting re-worked, it needs real-world stress testing but somehow the beta team around the XY is a bit conservative idk

We are conservative in answering, because we literally are working on things obsessively, daily, meaning literally daily. We are working on stuff, and there are so many changes that happen and Jonas does so much work that we have to try to keep up with him, so all credit to him for his incredible work ethic and for keeping us busy as much as we can keep up with it. It sounds like it’s not much work, but it is, and we do it all at our ability while balancing real life obligations, but the answer to your question long story short is we don’t want anyone to have false hope or be misled, but with something like we just dropped, you can imagine we hope that there is some element of surprise and happiness to bring to the end users, too.

Meaning it’s not all about us either, we hope there is a little bit of youthful surprise and anticipation

Love the new update! It’s amazing to see how this little device keeps evolving into something truly magical. Fingers crossed for a simple time-stretch feature in a future update, so loops can automatically follow the BPM without changing pitch. That would make it even more incredible!

Your work is appreciated.

Thank you.

The update is listed on the website now as well.
To my horror one of the “features” is “improved bootloader security”

I tested it today. I really like the multi-channel USB. I tested it with Cubase and the EP-136 K.O. Sidekick today. At first, I had problems finding it (COM → SYSTEM → USB). There you can choose the audio mode (8 ch) and then you can route the different sources to the 8 tracks. You can choose the 8 instrument tracks, Main Out, Aux Out, Type, FX1, FX2, Metronome, and also the mic and line in. So if you have 8 tracks, effects, and tape things going on, then 8 tracks are not enough and you need to record things twice, but I really like it.

I did not deeply test the new filter. I wanted to check the distortion, which is nice. I am not sure about the compressor yet. The filter itself is a simple low-cut/high-cut filter. You cannot add envelopes directly; you would need to do this via LFO or velocity if needed. So that is a bit of a downer here, but I guess you just need to decide what you need per track: envelopes or distortion/compressor.

I think the drum synth is nice, maybe a bit limited, but I guess you can make great things with it. You can choose per key which kind of drum you want to use (Kick, Snare, Hi-hat, Shaker, Clap, Congas, FM, Tom, Tambourine, Resonator). So all in all, you can create 24 different sounds. Each of these has 4 different settings you can choose (e.g., pitch, length, tone…) and you can also add randomness to each, so the settings change randomly. And of course, you can choose pan and volume.

A bit unfortunate is that when you change settings as parameter locks, they apply to all keys/sounds on that step. So if I change the cutoff on step 1 for the kick, I will also change it for the snare (if I have a snare on step 1). But currently, of course, I only see the things that are not there rather than what you can do with it. I guess the drum synth and the new compressor/distortion alone can make great things. All in all, I like it, and time will tell how good the drum synth really is!

Just realized, while playing w this update, that the filter style can be swapped with a push or the black encoder… I wonder if that’s new, or when all that happened!!

Yeah
I found another feature in sample screen, is this something new or have I totaly missed it in previous version. This function is missing in the manual
“Shift to enable latch recording (not need to press record button then record)”

No this was from the beginning

The drum synt have new features added in envelope screen as well.
Some swing, time shift called funk (encoders 1)
Randomize (encoders 3)

this is a perfect update for me

the list of additions may seem small after all the hype but the impact of just the two main things is HUGE

8ch usb routing and drumline are incredible
