Op-xy wishlist

It would be interesting if they add a cc message to control the preset scramble function. While it could be just a basic toggle where any value over a threshold toggles it on and off it would be really interesting if the cc value controlled the amount of scrambling performed on the current active preset. For example a cc value of 10 might allow values to randomize ±10 units from current present settings. It would also be great if the aux audio track worked entirely over usb-c audio rather than requiring the use of the multiport. On multichannel devices such as the tx-6 there should be a mechanism to handle the routing of aux out to the xy as a selectable source over usbc.

It would be cool if when in the arranger you could hit shift+rnd to generate a new random scene using the various tracks and patterns in that project and then when in song mode you can hit shift+rnd to add a random scene to your song. It would continue building off of the scramble workflow available on the synth engines. It would be a really fast way of taking all the work done in making 9 patterns on 16 tracks and rearranging them in unexpected ways. The brain could even get involved and analyze your patterns to randomize but also in keeping with a song structure. For example it could combine them to make an intro, outro, bridge, breakdown etc. that could be done according to pattern density and other content. That brain layer might be too much though and I’m happy with just having random scenes and random scene arrangements in song mode.

General Wishlist:

  • CUSTOM WAVETABLES in the wavetable engine, it’s by far the best, custom wavetables would put it in a world of its own, comparable only to VST’s, and would allow users to create a whole category of content packs. The default wavetables are already quite high-res, I was impressed! No way this isn’t a planned feature!
  • Alternative warp modes in the wavetable engine, right now it’s just phase distortion, we could do well with ringmod from a basic waveform, spectral gate, spectral filter, stuff like that!
  • FX per track, or 2-3 Flex FX slots that can be assigned to single tracks. This is probably doable. Distortion’s pretty vital to get many different basic sounds and I don’t want to have to use all of my 2 FX sends to apply distortion for one sound patch.
  • Sequencer zoom-in: I want to be able to zoom into notes so that I can create legato pitch slides, flams, etc
  • More filter types for the track filters! Notch, resonant and/or clean bandpasses, phasers! Combs! Flanges! You can do it TE.
  • Filter polyphony control! We should be able to choose mono or poly on the track filter. Mono filters on chords are amazing! Especially a theoretical bandpass.
  • Maestro quantization to currently selected scale on the Brain
  • Sample stretching / BPM syncing, this is so critical…

FX wishlist:

  • EQ FX with modulatable parameters
  • Spectral harmonizer
  • Spectral compressor with tilt shelf
  • Multiband dynamics controller with attack and release times starting at as close to 0MS as possible
  • Simple Compressor that can be positive or negative Ratio and with a possibility for fast attack/release times

Engine wishlist:

  • TZFM engine with switchable layouts and basic shapes. Think Operator, Citrus, FM8, but thru-zero! Simple, but insanely powerful and important for heavy electronic music. Right now Wavetable can get a basic result, but it only has “one waveform” as the modulator (sinewave as phase distortion, where warp=mod depth and drift=frequency). We need more xmodding!

y’all will have to forgive me for dismissing every single other non-sampler sound engine available on this device.

  • Assign maestro to the external midi track (on op-z is it possible)

I’ve also find a difference with the lfo settings between the native midi track and if i assign midi to a standard track (is a bug?)

  • a drum synth engine
  • Improve the arpeggio
  • Increase the font size on the lcd

What I find most urgently missing is the ability to overwrite presets, instead of just creating a copy with a timestamp in the snapshot folder. At the very least, there should be an option: do I want to save a copy of the preset, or overwrite it? Having to rename presets over and over again is really annoying.

It is too late for this, but I wish that both the OP-1F and the OP-XY could use SD cards for storage. Fortunately, the mtp function works great with my Linux laptop, so this would be a minor detail.

As I understand it, the Digitakt and Digitone from Elektron require the use of their application that runs on Windows or Mac to get anything into, or out of, these devices. That is a deal killer for me since the first thing I do when I get a computer is take Windows off entirely and I don’t own a Mac, not to mention I didn’t get on well with that workflow.

The ability to overwrite presets is actually also the thing I am missing the most.
In addition to this I would really love to

  • save FX presets.
  • add a bluetooth keyboard (a computer keyboard for typing, so you can change names easier)

The following thing will probably not happen, but I really would love to have one FX-insert per patch

And I am pretty sure the following will not work hardward wise, but it would be so great if the Midi in-inpur could be used as another mulit output.

Has TE said something somewhere about whats to come. New Synth Engines? Maybe a DrumEngine or a capable FM Engine. Somehow I am tempted but for the price it lacks a few things for me.

The only thing I’ve seen them say they are working on is new graphics for the effects. But that was right after it was released and nothing so far.

They also said at Superbooth this year there’s a new update coming for all Field devices to make them work better together, but no idea what that is. If I had to guess it would be wireless connection between them all at once somehow, but that’s only a guess.

I read from a beta tester that a slicer and a drum synth engine are planned at some point.

To be honest, I hope that some qol improvements (overwriting named snapshots, renaming of samples etc.) and bug fixes will be implemented first. The maturity level of XY still leaves room for improvement.

I think its a nice machine. A little bit shoocked that it seems to seel at this price obviously in not a final shape.
For me a drum synth would be the least thing for a thing that focusses on Rhythm.

Completely agree.

I still think that overwriting presets is one of the most important things.
But in addition to this:

  • implement subfolders for samples/presets/projects. This would be so helpful!
  • when you move samples/presets, they are missing in your project and you have to look for them manually. It would be great if there would be an automated search through the file system for missing patches/samples (as in NI Kontakt e.g.).

I’d love to see both of those!

I think being able to sequence the master eq and compressor is essential. While it’s fun to perform those pages in real time it would be much better to record the performance into the song. I would much rather have the cv track be a mixer track. I don’t really feel the cv track is of much use because you need the multiport for audio out so it is mostly a wasted track anyways. Besides cv gate is really a meager offering and anybody who wants to do something expressive with midi is going to use a real midi to cv converter which offers cv, gate, and modulation. The multiport is a neat concept but sort of gimmicky because again it’s needed for audio so its midi and cv capabilities are mostly impractical. I wish they would have handled the ports differently with both a fixed midi in and out and fixed audio send and return ports. Basically if they made it as good as the $100 line module I’d be happier but no use crying over spilled milk because I bought it knowing the ports were limited as designed. I doubt they will see it as a mistake because that would mean their product is flawed but they would be better off recognizing it is flawed and reworking its features to maximize the existing hardware rather than just honoring the initial aesthetic concept or the original plan for the device.

Lots of cool suggestions in here - LOTS. I’m very easily pleased, and currently only had my OP-XY for 2 weeks so I’ve still got a lot to learn, but my biggest wish would be the ability to export an arrangement as an mp3 file. I do find it very strange that the only way to get a rendered song is to plug it into something and record the output.

For me that’s the No.1 big wish for this device.

Extra custom send/return per track would also be nice, but I don’t see that as being as important as rendering finished projects.

My main wish is to have the ability to mute individual drum sounds on drum sampler. Would make it so much more usable for live performance.

Many good suggestions here

The only thing I need:

Minimum 2 audio tracks, nothing fancy, which play along with entire song mode composition. Now I can record guitar/instrument of choice into one track and vocals into another. Or resample the entire composition and add layers whatever.

This is the only thing keeping the device from being a “daw in a box” and looking at other devices. As an owner of both xy and 1f I am not going to lug around a whole nother device just to record. XY needs this. Thanks

I’ve had mine for only a few weeks and overall I really like it. I would just like the MIDI bugs to be worked out.

  • Even though I have my focus track set to receive on a specific channel, they all still receive MIDI from every channel. I.e, if I’m using a controller keyboard set to channel 1, it always sends midi to track one. I’d love to be able shut that off.
  • I know I can stop all MIDI from coming in, but I don’t want that either, since my OP-XY receives clock from another device
  • If something is plugged into MIDI in (or using USB for both), MIDI out stops working immediately upon pushing play. I love that I can technically assign a specific output channel to each track, but they don’t work unless have no MIDI input at all. Same with the dedicated external MIDI track.
  • Users on the subreddit told me that these things worked for a while, then a firmware update broke them. Hopefully then it’s just a matter of “unbreaking” those functions.
