Or at least hearing the impact of manually changed parameters while holding a key. Currently the sound has to be retriggered to hear the changes. It is different from how drum sampler works on OP-1 field (and how it is expected anyway).
To me there are 4 main things to be improved:
1 - Quantized pattern or scene change → if i want to play Live i don’t want to rely on the song, because it would really mess with my live
2 - Allow to jump from one scene to another manually inside songs, more or less how it’s possible on the polyend tracker
3 - IMPROVE the LFO PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE… it’s hard to understand, it’s not very consistent, doesn’t have the possibility to modulate the frequency of another LFO, and in fact, they should really add another LFO that behaves on Digi style.
4 - I’d like it to be more consistent when switching screens: when i go back to the instrument screen i would like to use the last screen i used, for example filter, adsr, or LFO. This is way more usable than sending you by default to the main instrument screen, and then in live you have quickly to switch to the screen you need. This is really a bummer for live performance.
Sorry 5 - *i think this is important: as for the fx, brain and tape, allow also to decide which tracks are affected by the Punch-in FX, i mean sometimes i don’t want both my drum tracks to be affected, or not all the instruments…
Also, would be great and would make it a very serious instrument if they managed to get to 16 the number of allowed patterns, that’s bonus ![]()
I agree with point number 4. This is quite annoying. OP-Z has a setting to enable this.
Maybe I’m missing the obvious, but this is very annoying:
- Working on a song just with the XY using internal synths.
- Connect to some outboard gear == change every single pattern, one by one, from internal synth to MIDI.
- Untether from outboard gear? Change every single pattern, one by one, back to internal synth (if you remember the patch you were on!).
Love this thing but this is driving me nuts.
There is another way but I definitely wouldn’t call it obvious.
You can assign outgoing MIDI channels for Tracks 1-16 from the project Config menu. Press the pen/project button, press M4, and scroll to MIDI.
Note that any track with a MIDI engine will override the project config channel assignment.
Hope that covers what you’re trying to do!
not quite sure what you are saying, but maybe one idea could be to first make a copy of the project you are modifying? then you can at least go back to the original version of the project without any trouble?
I do this for “finished” tracks, but any change would need to be made in two places.
Hello! Very new XY owner here. I’ve owned it for 2 days. I am really enjoying it and done a couple of jams for YouTube. In terms of sound design it’s great but there’s a few UI decisions that perplex me.
I’d like to see:
- Numbers on all tracks in arrange and mixer view. (The active track could be white out in a circle). When I’m jamming there’s too much cognitive load to remember which track is which, even with just 8 tracks. Adding numbers would just make it’s faster.
- be able to also add little icons to the same screens (drum icon for drum tracks, keyboard icon for keys, horn icon for horns etc etc). This would also really help to see what instrument tracks are. Making the tracks more visually different would massively help workflow/jamming
- The arrange screen could be so much more powerful with a few small tweaks. When you have a track selected, you see all the different patterns stacked, but these collapse into just one with 3 lines under to show there’s multiple. It really annoys me that if you are on the final pattern of 4 for example, and the stack collapses, the lines are still under. It would be far more useful to show the lines above, to show that you are at the bottom of the patterns available. Or even better, don’t collapse the stacks at all, just show all the patterns either above or bellow the selected one as grey blocks. Not even any need to show the midi notes on these. Just show me how many above or below there are. I like to create patterns with progression this would be a far better solution.
- Following on from this, it is ridiculous that you can’t select, say pattern 3 of 3, and move it a out freely in the stack. As I work on my music, I want to be able to create progression. Moving newer patterns to the top because I feel like it would be better at the start etc. Current implementation feels poorly considered.
- Why can’t the send effects levels AND the volume levels be shown at the same time on the mixer screen? Being able to keep track of what you’ve applied to each track while everything is playing would be far better than the current implementation where the send effects levels vanish after a second or so and return to just showing the volume.
- Please for the love of god, have a ‘remember sub page’ option like on Elektron boxes. Most times I only ever really tweak the filter during a jam, going back to the Synth screen is annoying. It adds extra button presses during a jam and slows things down.
- There’s a couple of menu screens where only the left knob works to navigate. I can’t remember exactly which, but if all 4 could do the same things in these situations when why not.
- I’m used to pressing and turning knobs (Elektron style) to move quickly though menus/settings, adding this globally would make things so much easier and faster.
There are loads of other things I’ve spotted but can’t remember right now. The things above for me would elevate the experience no end. I’m a UX/UI designer for a living so maybe I’m more susceptible to spotting this stuff. I’m really loving it right now though. The synths sound great and it’s a lot for such a small box.
My biggest wishes:
- Sample renaming on the device
- Better preset management (working with snapshots is unnecessarily complicated bullshit. I would prefer to overwrite an existing preset after editing)
Or control tails/release for individual drum rack sounds. And allow concurrent notes from one sample and its octave-transposed sibling.
An extra FX per track would be great, or the option of having different effects per track.
Sure, there’s lots of things TE could add but the one thing I would love and it could be implemented with an object that’s already there is a drive parameter on the filter unit like Electron do.
One, it can give extra character to the filters but more so, an option for more tonal drive/distortion options on each channel as opposed to using the distortion/overdrive fx on the bus. For me, this would be a game changer as most of the sounds the OP-XY are quite clean really.
So yes, just an extra parameter on the Filter for distortion/drive which could be accessed using the Shift button. Pretty please? \m/
i hope they add a screensaver. i’m very wary of leaving mine on unattended for long stretches for fear of eventual burn in
It’s an IPS LCD - there’s no risk of burn in (you might get some temporary image retention in rare cases but this sorts itself out very quickly).
thank you for this! for some reason i had assumed it was an OLED…
Sound link is pretty major for me. I use an external midi controller and before the update, I had to be super careful to not make different instances of the same sound in different patterns (due to the sudden changes when switching patterns) and also the values of the external knobs being different and then values jumping as I turned the knobs. But not anymore! I’d just like the option to have sound link turned on by default as I’m unlikely to ever not use it ![]()
Do you guys think a Drum synth (fm/wavetable) will eventually be added?
I suspect so, as it has been requested a lot. Probably also another synth engine at some point. However, I do not necessarily think it will happen anytime soon. Can take several years as my impression is that TE rolls out features over many years rather than quickly updating there devices feature wise.
You’re right, the og OP-1 evolved for a number of years until the Op-1 field came in. Atm, I’m almost convinced to sell my Field to fund an XY.
