OP-Z production peek #1

Looking forward to see it!

Hey cuckoo! Appreciate you can’t give away details, but are you able to comment on if there has been any significant changes and if it might be getting close-ish to release?

Shame on them, but good on you for being a man of integrity.

I can't really comment on anything, other than say it's evolving, and reiterate what's already been mentioned in earlier interviews: Unity will play a part in visuals. It has many tracks to sequence for visuals and music. 2017 has been mentioned. I hope they'll make it!

Visuals are something I’d love to intergrate. I can see me picking up the OP-Z but if it doesn’t fit in with my current I’ll simply put my projector to use in a different way and not buy it. I may have an idea that runs in as a good second. A choice pick of movie clips to run alongside my Darxxxenius plan

@cuckoo aside from the OP-Z, I’m very interested in what the next round of POs will be… any sneak peeks??

So, the PO-30 Clown, laughter emulation synth. Got it! ; )

He won’t share anything. He is a Teenage Engineering shill. They probobly made him sign a crazy NDA and pay him with weekly op-1 firmware updates with features we can only dream about dreaming about.

OP-1 updates? I’m on OP-3 now! Kidding.

I did sign an NDA for the PO-20 series, perhaps it’s still valid. It doesn’t matter. Leaking is not cool. It’s about trust, and friendship.
TE has a launch strategy for each product they make, and keep lips sealded until it’s time to announce some shit. All I can do is wish them luck, and sometimes give them a little push, because obviously I love their stuff. Jesper is a friggin genious, and so are all the developers.

PS. @sammyjams
The Clown Laughter emulation is in alpha. Sounds great ;-D

Well said (written) @cuckoo
You are the kind of man who can be trusted in a combat situation!

Come on, we know you already leaked a video of the early Clown Laughter sampler:

The staging is very smart, by the way. Love the theatrical aspect of it.

LOL

Looking at the prototype of the OP-Z I wonder why they don’t just put a screen on it in the big empty space… How much cost would a little screen add? If I need to hook this up to an ipad to use it I might as well just use an ipad sequencer like modstep etc with ipad synths? Can’t really see where the OP-Z fits in/stands out on the current landscape. I’m probably jumping to conclusions and it’ll be more appealing once some real demos appear. Just seems like a bit of a confused product. Portable…but not exactly

You don't need to hook up the OPZ to anything to use it, you just get cool graphics if you do. The guys at TE have said you should easily learn it in no time, and the added screen just helps you learn faster.

All the buttons light-up on the OP-Z, so there is plenty of opportunity for an effective screen-less UI (reminiscent of the original electribes), but then have the option of hooking up a decent graphical display when the mood/need arises - like the idea of that a lot…

I’m too used to being able to see stuff. Might have been OK on the original electribes but that was years ago, why go backwards on something like this? If I’m buying anything portable that sucks in the screen department it’ll be a Deluge  Also the tiny buttons as keys thing on the OP-Z would maybe irritate me. Be like playing my casio vl-tone. I guess it’s just aimed at musicians making different music than I am. Seems like a step backward after op-1 tho. Maybe I’m just missing the point or maybe it’s going to be pretty cheap device, in which case it might have some appeal, like a mega volca, if it’s more expensive than current Korg electribes or Circuit I think they’ll possibly have difficulty selling them…

I have an update of my little project  Well i’m running about 2 weeks late because of the school but i finally fixed the oscillator’s frequency instability. And i implemented the psychoacoustic bass enhancement.

Yellow color is output of the oscillator in frequency domain. Blue is the psychoacoustic processing output. Let me tell what is this non-sense. We all know that small speakers cannot recreate lower frequency spectrum. But it turns out that humans and most animals can perceive a note with just its upper harmonics. This is called missing fundamental. What i did here is just extract the frequencies that speaker cannot recreate and add their upper harmonics, hoping that it may be perceived with just the harmonics. And the result is really really good. Because the harmonics have higher frequencies speakers has no problem to produce them. and the perception is really nice, of course its not as good as the real thing but it's better than the option of not hearing them entirely.

Also i 3D printed the body of keyboard. I know it's not novel in any way, but i didn't had the time to came up with something fresh. It's capacitive, and have special cavities inside of the top plate to ensure electric field isolation only to buttons and sliders. I have an exam tuesday, after that i will try to finish the pcb for keys.

Now i'm focused on wireless connectivity. There are some inexpensive dev boards based on esp8266 like https://www.adafruit.com/product/2471. I'm currently working on a way to control the synth with this little dev boards. It's like the OP-Lab but wireless and inexpensive.

OP-Z is going to be half the price of the OP-1 or less, so they have to make sacrifices. It's somewhere between a PO and an OP1. So in that sense it isn't an OP2 at all and more of a side step than the "step forward" you are talking about. Sound like it's not for you which is all good though. I'm pretty excited.

I’m oddly excited about the visuals engine and how easy it will be to match quick videos to beats.
