These are both very interesting tips I had no idea about before–the exact kind I love learning about and discovering. Thanks for sharing!
I make my Songs 1 Pattern only and use the Mute Groups for arrangement. One useful thing i discovered is, when you tap the mixer button 3 times really fast, you stay in the mixer mode and can play mute groups wirhout holding the mixer button. However, when you press something else, it will switch back to normal behavior.
it works with any top button
Took me forever to learn you can do this with the MIDI menu. You can normally access it by holding Screen + Tempo and, similarly, you can “pin” it by holding Screen and tapping Tempo 3 times.
Interesting fact) this function is described in the instructions)
No problem. I also often use Shift + Record while adjusting parameters, so it returns to the original position when letting go. That method is a bit more straightforward.
If you’re on the performance track and holding down some notes, you can still perform other actions. For example, although it can be a bit tricky, if you position your fingers correctly, you can use your free fingers to press the master track and mute/unmute tracks. You can also switch between tracks or adjust parameters on different tracks. The performance track will remain engaged until you release it.
If you record a track parameter on a step, you can edit it when the sequencer is stopped. Fun on percussion tracks alternating between Loop and Retrig with longer notes.
Plus they respond to Parameter Spark!
You may already know this, but one of the options in general.json allows you to latch notes, which can be pretty helpful with the performance track. You have to hold the note, hold shift, and let go of the note before you let go of shift (not intuitive to me… might just be me).
Multiple tracks can have notes latched at the same time, so switching between them won’t affect the latched notes.
Yep, I forgot to mention that.
That isn’t true, sample time is much longer on the op-xy.
Because beta testers involved in the development have reported that is 20 seconds per pad on a drum track. I don’t know the sampling time for a synth track or for multi samples. The sampling has hugely improved on xy from the z!
Check the elektronauts forum and thread on the op-xy. A beta tester has been answering questions there and listed sampling time for the new drum sampler. I’m not sure if he listed sampling time for the synth sampler.
They sent me an XY last week, and @dhunterrr is right–it’s 20s per pad and can be stereo. It seems to take a few seconds to load longer samples to a pad, though.
Of all my devices, the OP-Z remains my favorite! This is just my opinion. Even among my DAWs, MIDI controllers, and devices shown in the picture, I love the OP-Z the most because it’s truly my go-to device.
Love hearing this!
The XY has almost completely replaced the Z for me in terms of sequencing, but I think the OP-Z works incredibly well as a mic, FX processor, and MIDI router. And drum machine.
To paraphrase someone else (maybe even here): once you get proficient with your OP-Z you can move and make changes as quickly as you can think of them.
Also its limitations have really helped me focus in general. So many times I wished I could store more drums on it… but I could never answer why I would possibly need more than 96 snare sounds.
I’m really glad to hear you’re enjoying the OP-XY! I picked one up myself and had a pretty different experience. I’ve run into quite a few bugs—some of which I think you mentioned in one of your videos—so it was reassuring to know I’m not the only one noticing them.
At the end of the day, I still find myself reaching for the OP-Z more often. It’s compact, affordable, and surprisingly powerful for its size. That said, I’m still hopeful the OP-XY will continue to improve with future updates.
I know this is the tips and tricks section, so apologies for going a bit off-topic—I’ll be sure to share some actual tips and tricks soon!
What is the white angular shaped box above the KO II?
I also like the fact you arranged everything next to the kitchen sink… literally “everything and the kitchen sink”
@jtswearingen do you ever find that sometimes the Z punch-in effects occasionally misbehave or change on their own? im noticing that occasionally, ill tinker with lots of punch-in effects and record them to the sequencer, then ill turn the device off and the next day when i go to listen again, the “choices” the punch-in effects make seem subtly different. maybe its user error but AFAIK ive not changed anything at all.
Definitely! For whatever reason everything I record to the Performance track (and Tape track, for that matter) comes out a bit different than what I played in.
Also someone in the community pointed out you lose a LOT of resolution if you set Step Length to 9 on any OP-Z track. Basically, if a note’s length crosses into the next step it will play for the full remainder of that step (i.e., rest of the bar). With punch-in FX this can lead to pretty unexpected stuff on playback.
