There are definitely ways to add cumulative tape effects by using the sampler and then resampling that to a different tape type or increasing gain when recording back to another tape.

absolutely. but its just not imparted on the audio directly by copy/lift or paste/drop. the ONLY way (and this is what i understood @Gambler 's statement to mean) to impart tape ā€œeffectsā€ (like vintage or porta) is during the RECORDING function. any other function will not impart those tape characteristics.

so as you said, if you ā€œresampleā€ that involves recording, so youā€™ll get effects.

Anyone noticed that MIX setting on Terminal goes from dry to 100% wet when you turn in half-way up and then it applies some kind of chorus-like effect doubling the sound on itself? Well, it sounds like a chorus on some settings, but it seems to interact with model parameter in some interesting way.

Forgive me if I missed this somewhere in the forum, but are people really are using the different tape styles to ā€œtreatā€œ their audio? Like, doing a decent amount of lift/drop on different type styles to try to pick up different flavors? I havenā€™t really played with the tape styles that much, but other than a little bit more air as you go down the Tapes (and then none on mini desk, from what I can tell), I canā€™t hear a significant enough difference to justify going to that lengthā€¦ If thereā€™s a thread here, feel free to point me there, otherwise just curious if anyone would care to help alleviate my curiosity!

Yeah! Seems like youā€™re right, either a chorusing or at least just past 50% on the mix and it starts to increase the stereo width
(similar to the stereo knob on Dimension)

Please TE let us control the three master EQ band frequencies! Shift+knob is not currently being used on the master EQ page.

I promise I wonā€™t complain that three is not enough! If they are adjustable Iā€™d be so happy!
It would be sound shaping perfection.

If I could have three adjustable frequency bands, it would be super useful for resampling and getting things to fit nicely in their little sonic spaces. Could even be combined with Nitro on the master effect for a faux 5 band EQ when resampling.

Please TE! Adjustable Master EQ frequency bands!

Iā€™d probably have to watch a video or something to see this in action because Iā€™ve been trying to pull it off and I canā€™t :grinning:

I think they mean the frequencies of each band, not just boost or attenuation.

Correct!

I mean the 100, 1k and 10k htz frequencies themselves.

Lots of mixers have at least an adjustable mid-frequency and it helps a lot!
For those that arenā€™t familiar, adjusting that mid frequency means you can more specifically pin point a frequency range youā€™d like to accentuate.

If that really eliminates the clicks I keep experiencing when lifting, Iā€™ll be so excited. Iā€™ll have to try it out.

It gives you a technique by which to eliminate clicks - either by sampling the bars you need plus any reverb decay, or by adding reverb decay over the top of other stuff. It takes practice to get the hang of it.

I recently quickly whipped up a song as an apology to my wife, lolā€¦ and I normally donā€™t do vocals but that was required for what I wanted to archive. I had piano on 1 for the melody / pitch reference, drums on 4 from Finger rather than metronome. Then tracks 2 and 3 I used for vocals, Iā€™d record a bit to track to then record the next line to track three, then track 2, alternating, so I had bits I was mostly happy with. I then lifted track 2 and shift-drop merged it into track 3 - a single vocal merged from the different takes. I then recorded some more vocal bits to track 2 and lifted and merged them in to track 3 when it made sense to do so. This was a great workflow for the task at had, given the constraints. I then used track 2 for some string parts.
Shift drop lets you layer up things as you go, once youā€™re happy with them. Fantastic!
At one point I muted tracks 1 2 and 4, so only vocals could be heard. Used master Mother reverb on a small room setting to make a doubling vocal plate type reverb sound, and recorded from the ear onto track 2 (I think 2 was empty or I moved it elsewhere on the tape first) - this printed the reverb to the vocal track then when happy I deleted the dry vocal.

Pretty cool stuff. Sure itā€™s not working in Nuendo or something, but itā€™s a capable workflow and feels nothing like working with a computer. I find my brain works differently in front of the computer and I get more of a programmer mindset than a creative musician perspective, so these new tools on the Field are extremely welcome :slight_smile:

What was stopping them to have shift+drop on the OG OP1 ?

perhaps not a whole heck of a lot, but id like to gently point out that it would be imprudent for any of us to speculate on how easy or simple it would be to implement software/firmware features on an old deprecated legacy device. apple has more money in the bank than most countries and they canā€™t even maintain devices which are half the age of the og-1.

theyā€™re passionate over there at te, so if of the og-1 doesnt have any feature in particular, then its prob for some good reason

Iā€™m surprised they brought USB audio to the OG. That was super cool.

Shift drop and also longer lift and drop sections are actually quite slow. If youā€™re merging a track that is 1.5 minutes long or something, it does take ages. Some sort of progress bar would make it feel quicker. Anyway it would take an absolute AGE on the OG.

OG doesnā€™t have stereo tracks. So there is 1/2 the data to deal with. IIRC, it also uses 16-bit bit depth for tape. Thatā€™s another 1/2. With 1/4th of the data to process, I donā€™t think speed would be the main issue. One difficult question is how it would deal with panning when the destination is mono. The only simple solution is to completely ignore panning and just take track levels into the account.
