Thinking more on it, maybe it was TE that JP got mad at. Maybe they were in talks to takeover the site or something and it broke down. Just idle speculation on my part and it doesn’t explain the subsequent auction.
question about the auction. does that money go to host gator? or to the domain owner (i.e. JP)?
i actually think we'll be better off in the long run here. i feel like this would be a reoccuring thing w/ the old site every year or two.

Honestly, I don’t think the data loss is that big of a deal.
Many of us are already here, and I’m sure more will be joining. We’ll make a new community, with new topics, and new data.

My advice would be to get some google ads on here, approach TE or TE retailers and ask for affiliation links, put some banners to BUY op-1’s so you get a kickback. Any money made will help towards server costs and might end up making your time spent maintaining the site more than worthy.
I’ve ran sites in the past and full well know how much work it is and how much demand can build up when the sites get popular, then you have to balance your day-job too. whereas if you are making a little bit of money to make it worthwhile then it makes it easier

I would be hard pressed to do ads… TE and I have a relationship, which is good. might add a paypal thingy some day…
He may just have it up that way so someone else (who has no love for the game) doesn't pounce on it.
You may find that he'll relinquish the keys for $1, once he verifies that the person buying actually intends on fostering the OP-1 community.

TL;DR;couldn't be fucked to check: JP gave us the data, and Go Daddy won't let him renew the domain w/ out a hefty fee he isn't willing to pay, or deal with.
What is weird, GoDaddy says He is auctioning it. so there is some shifty dealings… Might mention that to him @KrisM.

Just a note from working with GoDaddy and other domain-hosts in the past…
It’s very unlikely JP is auctioning the domain, it’s just fairly standard practice to open it up to bidding after it expires, since it clearly has had some value to someone, so there may be others who want it.
Also, the step before that is the hefty fee to get the domain back.
So I wouldn’t blame him, but I also wish people would buy domains for more than 1 year so that they don’t get bitten by expired cards etc.
And stop using GoDaddy and friends… Gandi is a better option and less likely to screw you.
But simply renewing the domain you own does not require hefty fees… they always send multiple email reminders that your domain is about to expire etc.
Ball was dropped at some point, not by Godaddy. No question about it.
