Recommend a reverb

Will someone please do a demo of OP-1 and OTO BAM. This seems a perfect combo,

I also just pulled the trigger on the bam, there are only about 4 videos in total with the bam on youtube, im sure it will be great though…

They’re not demos so might not give you the best idea since there’s no on/off comparison, but these tracks use an op-1 being sent through a Bam.

Melodic stuff is op-1

100% op-1 through bam with some added vibrato (bim) and compression (rnla).

I’ll see if I can throw together a proper OP-1 + Bam demo this weekend. All I can say is that it’s the most beautiful reverb I have heard and I’m only enjoying it more as time goes on. I plan on using this reverb for many years, if not the rest of my life.

Edit: Here is a long demo I just recorded. I’m not very good at making demos but I tried to show a variety of its sounds. I go through every algorithm and most settings except I don’t touch the input gain and I mostly leave the Chorus setting at 1 (0 is off). I have the OP-1 EQ slightly accentuating the high end and the comp set to 86 LR, 25 drive, 25 release. I usually use the OP-1 with the drive setting somewhat high but wanted to keep distortion to a minimum while getting some of its character. Recorded through an Apogee Duet in Logic with no processing other than normalizing (so volumes vary throughout). Hopefully it gives some idea of what the Bam can do!

Thankyou so much Laughing Animal. Thats just what i wanted. I havent listened to it all yet but that last one mid way through was the best ambient space sound ive heard yet on the OP-1. Now im going to have to get one.

Cheers my man.

Yeah the last one is beautiful

You won’t regret it!

Thanks LA, sounds incredible. I was torn between the BAM and the BigSky, have no regrets I have pulled the trigger on the BAM. Can’t wait to send my Odyssey and Monomachine through it…

Stupid question but with any of these Reverbs how do you record or export the track. With the reverb attached to the OP-1 and the new sound created if you record to tape on the OP-1 will the new sound be there? Or do you have to record live from the Reverb?

thanks guys

That’s great! I’m glad my noodling around for 30 minutes yesterday has helped some people make decisions.

I’m sure you would not have gone wrong with the BigSky (I used to have a BlueSky but found its tone to be too pristine for my taste, great reverb nonetheless), but the Bam is a thing of beauty and it’s really easy to connect with thanks to its interface.

It depends on how you set it up. With OP-1 outs going into the reverb everything on the OP-1 will be affected. To get the reverb on OP-1 tape tracks you need to work in mono, plug one OP-1 output (left or right) into your mixer/interface/speakers, and the other into the reverb, with the output of the reverb going back into the OP-1. Your L/R pan control is now your effect send control.

I can sense a Big Sky vs BAM debate here. Which one to own? If one can afford it, both! I already have a Big Sky in my rig and as soon as my wallet pemits, I’ll be grabbing either a BAM or an Empress Reverb. Both come at roughly the same price, have stereo ins/outs, presets, MIDI. The Empress sounds as great to my ears as the BAM does and its 12 reverb algorhythms will be user-upgradeable, so I’m still undecided which one it will be.
As for the Big Sky sounding to pristine, when I need some dirt and analog warmth in the output signal I switch on the guitar cab simulator and while it’s still not lo-fi, the reverbs do sound pretty different and in a good way. As a matter of fact, when I bought my Big Sky I didn’t notice the cab sim had been on and that occured to me only weeks later. During that time I was wondering why it wasn’t sounding as pristine as in the countless demos I’d been watching back then,

The Empress Reverb is the one I’ll be picking up with my tax refune. I have their Multidrive and have seen demos of their other pedals and they are all top notch. Visually they make look a little boring but the sounds are certainly not.

Also, they are Canadian like me so gotta be patriotic there, too

Had an hour with the Empress on my AK tonight. Found some nice patches. Will try and throw a recording up but trying to demo/edit/upload a reverb pedal sucks cos tails go on forevvvvvver  the pedal sounds huge/beautiful/mojo/clean/sparkly/dark/thick/real/ambient/gritty/weird/classic… Whatever you want really. One patch blew me away. Made my AK sound like an Oberheim. Think it was with the Chorus modulation algo. Found ton of other cool sounds too and made a few banks of presets. I’ll try post something this week.

so I wanna get rid of my big sky and replace with a BAM. but that’s besides the point…

i just bought a TC electronics hall of fame to have it in the mix on my post fader send from the mixer and I do really like it - so for anyone looking for a reverb on a budget and doesn’t need all the shimmerglimmerwhatnots - this is one is a good one in my books. goes for $200 cad

Great demo Callofthevoid. The 10.20-10.40 part was fantastic. Chorus with Aaahhhs. That was very textured. Thanks for this.

Glad you got something out of the demo

Can someone tell me how to use a reverb with speakers. All ive got is a 20W external speaker for the OP-1 with a mini jack connector.

What do i need as in extra equipment. Im thinking i will need to buy an AMP to connect to the reverb which maybe wrong. And if i do have an AMP which one for a synth only? Im worried i may blow the little guy up if i have too much power.

Thanks for any help.

Depends how much gear you have.
I do Synth > Reverb > Mixer > amped monitoring speakers (it’s better to have amped speakers than add a “amp” brick in this chain)

One could also do Synth > Mixer — Mixer FX Send —> Reverb — Mixer FX Return —> Mixer > amped monitors

But in my case my shitty mixer’s send + return add too much noise, so I avoid this.
